My Target Scores

  1. I took the GRE a while ago when the now outdated method of scoring was in use. I scored a 1410. My GRE has since expired and I need to take it again. Additionally, I need scholarships. I'm broke. I have a crummy job, and there is no way I can go back to school without crushing the GRE again... hopefully better than I did the first time. I'm a little worried that if I study and spend all of that time I can't earn a better score. I have been busy, haven't read a book since college... I'm worried that I've been dumbed-down and that I should just avoid this all together. Any insights?
  2. I am a Senior at the University of Wyoming majoring in Economics and Statistics with a minor in math (honors college). I have applied to graduate schools for a Ph.D. in economics, and was wondering of my chances of getting in (with funding). Here's what I got going for me: -3.94 GPA (3.9 in major) -Math: Calc III (A), Linear Algebra (A), Theory of Probability (B+), then taking Real Analysis and Diff Q's next semester. -Stats: Many graduate courses, 2 theory courses -Econ: Intermediates, econometrics, math econ, history -McNair Research Scholar: Funded summer research with a mentor -Several other research projects -Several research presentations -GRE: Q - 166, V - 152, AW - 4.0 -TA for College Algebra -Tutor for high-level statistics classes -3 solid letter of rec: 2 economics professors, one if which I did research with. And 1 from statistics which I did my McNair project with. -Notes: First generation, low income, Hispanic, graduating in 3 years instead of 4 I'm interested in econometrics, applied micro, and labor. I get free applications, so I applied to many schools. Here is a list (starred are my target schools, double starred are the schools I am shooting high for): Stanford** Harvard** Berkeley** Yale** Princeton** MIT** UC San Diego* UCLA* Johns Hopkins* Chicago** Colombia* Northwestern* U of Oregon U of Michigan Cornell (Applied Econ)* Brown U* U of Pennsylvania* UC Irvine New York U U of Wisconsin Carnegie Mellon U of Maryland Duke* U of North Carolina* U of Rochester * I have gotten very mixed answers of my chances for admissions, and was wondering if anyone would be willing to give their opinion. I also applied to the NSF-GRFP. After reading about other people's profiles being rejected, I am starting to get worried. Thank you for the help.
  3. I want to pursue a PHD in economics, however, I received a grade of A- in my first two college math courses (advanced calc and multivariable calc) I am planning on taking linear next semester, but multi kind of kicked my butt (my class had a very difficult professor, and many of my classmates said linear was easier for them to understand than multi due to this). I go to a top 5 liberal arts school and am in my sophomore year. I get A's in all my econ courses and have some research lined up for next semester and a TA position, but I am still very worried that these two A-s may indicate that I am not good enough at math for econ grad school. Am I right to be worried?
  4. Hey guys. It's my first interview in this application season and I can't believe I received it 5 days after the application deadline. Compared to their previous timeline, I think they started interviews really early this year. Now I am 100% thrilled but worried at the same time since I am in the middle of online applications and don't have enough time to prepare for interviews and read papers these days so I don't know if I can't keep the conversation going once it gets really academic. Any suggestions?
  5. I'm an international student in the US. I'm now RAing for a professor and he often gives positive comments on me and my job, like "It's very good", "you're doing a great job", "I'm very impressed". I heard that in the US it doesn't always mean that people actually think highly of you even when they say such praise words to you. I'm worried that the professor might think that I am just mediocre or poor. How do you get to know the professor's true attitude towards you? Is it possible to tell just by looking at the diction of their comments?
