Decision* time, between the schools in the title. Interested in applied micro broadly, with some special eye towards market design, experiments and development. I value broad strength in applied micro over strength in any particular subfield since I'm not sure what subfield I want to do. * This is not strictly the decision problem as I've been waitlisted at Booth and Yale, but factoring them in will help me decide whether to press to get off the WL.

Yale undergrad here. The only beef I have with Princeton is its messy Visit Day which didn't leave good impression on me because I didn't have time for one-on-one faculty meetings and its up-and-down placements. Meanwhile NYU and Yale fare better in terms of placement. Not sure about my interests yet. Probably not Macro theory or Metrics (but might be applied metrics or macro labor/development etc.) Talked to some real nice Yale profs during Visit Day. Would it help career-wise to expand my network outside of Yale?

Asking because I'm currently contemplating a Yale offer, and people (IRL profs as well as anonymous posters on forums) say that their PhD program places better than the department's rank and has high value added. I'm wondering what's special about Yale that allows it to outplace higher ranked schools. To be clear, I would be very happy going to Yale, and I don't mean to belittle it at all, I'm just interested in knowing how they manage to punch above their weight, so to speak. It seems obvious that the quality of students coming in and the department's overall reputation would play a big role in placement. Given that Yale's faculty doesn't have quite the reputation in economics as the rest of the top 7, and that prospective students presumably value the faculty a lot when choosing where to do their PhD, how do they consistently place so well? What are the ingredients of their "value added"?

Maryland AREC vs Yale IDE/Master of Environmental Science
chlodog posted a topic in PhD in Economics
Hey guys! Please help me! I have been driving myself crazy trying to decide between these two programs. I managed to get accepted into the PhD program in Agricultural and Resource Economics at Maryland. It is a fully funded offer. I also got into Yale IDE and MESc (research track) with a $30K/year scholarship from the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. I am completely torn between the two programs. One on hand you have Maryland AREC which is a great program for environmental and development economics--my areas of interest. I also visited the school and absolutely loved it. The professors were all fantastic as were the graduate students. On the other hand, there is the joint degree program at Yale. Yale is great for environmental economics and the MESc program is flexible so I can make it a hybrid policy and science degree even though it is an MESc. My assigned research adviser is pretty awesome as well. Also, I have the chance to learn more about development economics through the IDE program. I am completely torn between these two programs. Any help or additional information would be extremely appreciated. I have to make a decision soon and I've never been more lost. Thanks guys! :) -
Hey guys, Anyone under the impression that Yale SoM doesn't interview their applicants as much as other b-schools? -OT

Hi, I recently came to know about Yale's Masters programme in International Devpt and Economics. Wanted to know how good is it, if I want it to be my terminal degree and not currently pursuiing any PhD dreams. Some background info abt me: I'm an economics undergrad from an asian developing country. Have been working in energy and climate change consulting domain for two years - wish to go to back to school now. However, with my limited maths and not so stellar grades, a PhD Econ looks out of reach. Therefore I have been looking for terminal masters degress in econ which can provide me a job in pvt sector/think tank after i graduate. Any info on this course - in terms of it market value - would be highly appreciated. Thanks! PS: i searched for a forum on this course, but was not able to find one. Hence, a new thread
