First, here's the link to the official ETS page:

Disabilities and Testing

I'm hoping that I can post here and others who have questions will find this thread. Also, I hope that others who've had experience dealing with ETS about their disabilities will give their feedback, too.

So, for those who are wondering what I'm rambling on about, I should explain that ETS has a policy under which ETS will make accommodations for those test takers who have documented physical, psychological, or learning disabilities. One of the most common accommodations to make is to allow the test taker more time to take the test.

This is what I've seen in my students at TestMagic. I'll give you the students and the run-down:

[*]"Yuan" had a diagnosed learning disability in dealing with numbers. She wanted extra time on the TOEFL. She had her disability diagnosed and documented by a specialist at the local community college. TOEFL denied her any extra time because TOEFL doesn't contain a math section.

[*]"Philip" is a middle school student who needed to take a test not administered by ETS. Again, with documentation, he was allowed unlimited time to take the test and was allowed to mark his answers by circling the best answer on the actual test, as opposed to bubbling in the answer on the answer sheet. If I recall correctly, he was also allowed to take the test by himself.

[*]"Sarah" is a GMAT test taker with diagnosed ADHD. ETS told her that her documentation was expired and would need to see another doctor. In the past, she'd been allowed a little bit of extra time, something like 30% more, if I recall.

I'm telling these stories from memory, and they are mostly accurate. I hope that others can share their stories, too. It's always good to know that you're not alone. :)

In most cases, my students have had ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Adolescents and Adults) and none of my students stay on their medication for long periods of time (they seem to go on and off), because of the negative side effects.

It can be very expensive to get these things documented. My students have told me that the testing (by the doctor to diagnose the patient) can cost $1000 or more. However, there may be some free clinics where you can get this done at a free or reduced cost.

So, that's about all I have to share about this matter. Hope to hear more stories. :)
