atishree
In order to evenly and effectively paint a rough surface, it is necessary to sand it and apply primer before applying the paint. (A) it and apply primer before applying the paint (B) it and prime it and paint it © it, then prime it, then paint it (D) the surface and apply primer before you apply paint to the surface (E) the surface, apply primer to the surface and then paint it

sj2025
IMO D. 'it' in A, B and C is incorrect. E is out because sand the surface and apply primer are the activities before paint. sand the surface, apply primer to the suface - surface is redundant. 800
Interesting. IMO A. Necessary to ... it and apply ..... B & C redundent No confusing subject is necessary (D out for "you") If "surface" is used 2 times to refer 1 thing ... third time it should not be "it"... (E Redundent)
spook22
Can we have the OA?
nitinkg
I think its A ------------- B- 2 It's are redundant E- surface is redundant D- Extra reference of 'you' is awkward C - not sure if second then can follow another 'then' without a conjunction 'and' to show relative time. missionGMAT
doesn't the "it" in A cause confusion? does it refer to paint or the surface. IMO E
Mocka
IMO..A In order to evenly and effectively paint a rough surface, it is necessary to sand it and apply primer before applying the paint. gmatissimple
In order to evenly and effectively paint a rough surface, it is necessary to sand it and apply primer before applying the paint. (A) it and apply primer before applying the paint (B) it and prime it and paint it © it, then prime it, then paint it (D) the surface and apply primer before you apply paint to the surface (E) the surface, apply primer to the surface and then paint it Explanation: Since the word "effectively paint" represent the idea of paint, we should eliminate the options in which "paint" has been used as verb. We can eliminate B, C, and E. The use of the word "surface" is redundant in option D. Answer is A.
Lav
doesn't the "it" in A cause confusion? does it refer to paint or the surface. IMO E paint is a verb in the first part of the sentence- surface is the only possible antecedent to 'it'. IMO A, as use of surface is redundant in D. gulliver_ind
paint is a verb in the first part of the sentence- surface is the only possible antecedent to 'it'. IMO A, as use of surface is redundant in D. In option A, there are two "it"s. "It is necessary to paint it".. is this ok?? In option E, the last it aptly refers to surface. Whats the official answer??
