slackslack
Hi everyone. As mentioned in the title, I am basically wondering what are the criteria one is judged upon when evaluated for a MA/PhD in International Relations/Poli Sci. Would an undergraduate double major in mathematics and economics disqualify one from consideration? What should be stressed? Thanks a lot! KGkhan23
The major is certainly fine. You should have a leg up in places like NYU especially, that stress methods. But apply where your professors know people and where you feel you'll fit. Just make sure you know some stuff about political science. As an econ major/polisci minor, I've noticed that political scientists are very aware of the disdain some economists hold for their field. Humanomics
I think "disdain some economists hold for their field" is captured quite nicely in the phrase "econowannabe." The infighting politics among social sciences make this path we're carving very difficult. Most days I wish I were satisfied with routine, mainstream mathematical economics, or routine, market-bashing with little empirics sociology, or even routine running-regressions on voting data sets political science. That way I would at least have a clear team I meant to play for and a relatively clear path ahead.
