Please help with the evaluation of the Argument essay. Thank you

Recommended Posts

Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by 30 percent. Potential employers, looking at this dramatic rise in grades, believe that grades at Omega are inflated and do not accurately reflect student achievement; as a result, Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should terminate student evaluation of professors.

Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.

This argument is invalid because it makes an assumption that the graduates from Omega University are not able to secure their jobs only because their grades are inflated by their professors. In addition, this argument does not address counter explanations and fails to provide essential data that can justify this argument.

The argument fails to provide sufficient evidence that can prove the fact that potential employers only consider their candidates grades during the evaluation process. Had the argument provided such reliable proof in terms of the surveys of potential employers and their feed back, it might’ve looked more reliable. In other words, the argument needs to provide essential data, which can justify its assumption.

In addition, the arguments assumes that the students at the Alpha Univeristy are more successful in getting jobs, because potential employers consider their grades more reliable. However, the argument misses the essential point that majors can play an important role in the hiring process. For example, the majority of students who are being hired from Alpha University might have majors needed by the employers (computer science, engineering, finance and accounting majors might be required by the potential employers).

Finally, the argument provides a naïve solution to the problem by offering to terminate student evaluation of professors. This solution can actually exacerbate current state of things and make it even worse. What if professors will stop trying to create interesting classes that help students learn more effectively, because now they feel that their students can not evaluate them? This can have a detrimental effect on teaching effectiveness.

In conclusion, above mentioned statements prove that this argument is invalid and full of logical fallacies.
