prompt: The city of Winston has two large department stores: Namen and Roscoe. Namen is known for its high-end designer fashions, while Roscoe is known for more affordable fashion options. Both Namen and Roscoe are each considering opening another store in the growing suburb of Salem, where the population has grown over 50% in the last three years and where the median income is $75,000. Namen’s executives argue that as population and median income increase, people are willing to spend more money on clothing. However, Roscoe’s executives believe that the suburbs are more family oriented, and therefore their store will be more profitable than their competitor Namen.

Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.

Any department store would be excited to find a chance to expanding their businesses. However, opening another store in a growing suburb may be a good investment only when certain conditions are met. Both Namen and Roscoe are making assumptions on the incoming populations for their success. It is important to see if those assumptions are true in order to make wise decisions.

Namen claims that it would be a good investment to open another store in Salem because its population is growing with the increased median income. Nevertheless, it is important to note that not all rich people will spend much money on clothing. There are other areas to spend money, such as digital devices and home-wares. If Namen wants to open a new store in Salem and get a profit from there, they will want to run a survey to see if the incoming people are willing to pay much money on clothing.

On the other hand, Roscoe believes that the suburbs are more family oriented, so the people there would like to use Roscoe for more affordable clothing. It is easy to assume that people in suburb are more family oriented than in urban areas, but it is merely a stereotypical presumption. In order for building another store in Salem to be a good investment, Roscoe also need to check the validity of the assumption. First of all, Roscoe need to see the family orientation of the incoming population. If 2000 people are coming in, but only 500 of them have family living with them, the assumption that the suburb people are family oriented would be fallacious. Moreover, there is no evidence that family oriented suburb people would prefer affordable clothing over high-end clothing. There are plenty of people who are willing to pay more for better quality clothing because it lasts longer than affordable clothing. Therefore, it would be a good idea to run a survey on the incoming population to see their average spending on clothes.

Incoming population and growing city may be an enchanting chance for both Namen and Roscoe. Nevertheless, it is crucial for both of them to do thorough research before taking into action because it may be a dangerous gamble if the assumptions that they are making for success are not proven to be true.
