simonsou
Just got rejected from UC Irvine and Queen's Smith (PhD in Management, Business economics track), almost at the same time. Hope offers coming soon...
SG7
UC Irvine is out Haven't gotten anything yet, is it normal for it to take a few hours or does this mean they're going in batches?
whamidohe
Waitlisted at Yale as well! Surprised after not hearing back from Chicago and rejection from Stanford... for those admitted, whats the funding if I may? 42k/year for everyone admitted. Everyone teaches (unless they have an external source of funding or something?) starting year 3, I believe.
Wahasky
Haven't gotten anything yet, is it normal for it to take a few hours or does this mean they're going in batches? No idea, I got no email or change on portal either. Given that a bunch of rejections have been posted I'm guess we haven't been rejected yet, either an offer will be coming or we're on a waitlist. Sometimes they send out offers one by one so could take a little while, I only see one offer up on gradcafe.
BostonFarmer
A moment of frustration for my recommenders telling me to apply only to top 10 and then getting rejected everywhere s far except a Yale waitlist... Same for me except that I even have no WL

Good luck, hopefully you are accepted! If you are WL, I think you have a very strong chance of getting in fwiw.
TheEconGuy10
Still waiting for Minnesota... At this point, even a rejection wouldn’t be the end of the world. So much uncertainty!

I've been more chill than I thought I'd be this week but I'm a ball of nerves right now, waiting to hear from Irvine and still thinking Minnesota might send out before end of the day as well... I haven't compared numbers but I wonder if schools are doing fewer acceptances and more waitlists this year because of the increase in applications and uncertainty around COVID. I have heard that Stanford is doing exactly that... admitting less and leaning more heavily on the waitlist to ensure they don't go over their target class size. Wouldn't surprise me to hear more places doing that. The extra time it will take for the market to clear if that is the case could also be part of why offers are coming earlier this year. TheEconGuy10
After contemplating about this a lot, I came to the conclusion the increase in number of applicants in schools are a result of people applying to more schools rather than a higher total number of applicants. I analyzed all the GC results of all the schools I applied to over the last three years, and while the number of schools that GC posters reported they had applied to has been increasing, I think there's been a huge jump this year. People usually apply to 10-15 schools per cycle, with a few outliers. This year, it hasn't been uncommon to see 25+ or even 30+ schools. Waitlists should have a bigger role this year. I honestly was doubtful about applying this year but all my recommenders suggested that I should go for it. Even after applying for around 20 schools, I feel like I am not going to get anywhere. TheEconGuy10
I feel like I should have applied to more than the 15 that I did lol  I feel you. Applied to 18 and am currently freaking out. At the same time, I'm glad I didn't spend the $200 to apply to Yale and Stanford as I had originally planned. People with much stronger profiles got rejected. It would've been a huge waste of money. COVID-19 creates a ton of self-reinforcing uncertainty, leading applicants to apply to way more schools than normal, and adcoms to be much less sure about what their uptake rate on offers will be. This would lead to a situation with fewer acceptances and more waitlists. But at the end of the day, it might not actually be that bad, it'll just take a while for things to sort out as people decline offers and the waitlists are cleared. OR maybe it is just going to be a brutal year, tons more people applying to programs and fewer slots available. Time will tell I guess.
TheDeadFlagBlue
Looking back, I have no idea what caused me to apply to Stanford, MIT, Harvard etc. I think my reasoning was that if I won the NSF, I would need to have applied to be accepted by one of these after the fact but I am not even sure if this is true? Why was I willing to light nearly 1k on fire on the basis of the tiny probability of me winning the NSF anyways?

Time will tell I guess. I really doubt that *more* people are applying so much as the average number of applications has spiked (labor market seems mediocre, not awful for college graduates tbh and COVID has probably repelled non-trivial numbers of international applicants?) and the latter should have no effect on outcomes by mid-April, even if it turns this cycle into a nightmare for all parties. I think the big question relates to cohort sizes...
Zubrus
I want to chime in that it is definitely the case that applications have gone up. The graduate secretary in my department said that applications went up at least 30% this year (top 5 program).
Dazedprospect
Man, hearing about the number of programs you guys have applied to has me nervous! I only applied to 8, so far I am at 1r/0a/7p :(
messi
Based on the results I've seen so far from Stanford, Yale and UChicago, looks like a pre-doc from top 5-10 really boosts your chances of scoring an admit, more so than a Q170 or a 4.0 GPA. hallowedelegy
I would also add working at a Federal Reserve branch. At least four of the admits to Stanford work at or have worked at a branch of the Federal Reserve (I am part of this year's admitted cohort by Stanford).
