mnbvbnm
We know that publications or papers already in R&R can help a lot. What about working papers that have been submitted but haven't received any response from journal? How much would those help if they are (i) top 5 (ii) field top (iii) lower than (i)(ii) qualities? startz
If you are a co-author with a research economist, then a working paper definitely helps because it is evidence that the economist thinks highly of you. Very, very few PhD applicants have written serious papers on their own.

I have a solo working paper but did talk to my professor a lot during the project. My professor will write one of my letters. I was worrying whether the paper will be taken seriously since as you said very very few applicants have serious solo papers.
startz
It will probably help a little. It depends a lot on the extent to which your letter writers discuss the paper.
