My response

Follow your dreams - this statement is very common and has been heard in so many motivational speeches in the current century. What this statement means is that one should have a goal in mind irrespective of how selfish it is and work on it. They should work hard for it and not stop till the goal is reached. Be it having a successful career in a field or providing a good lifestyle for your family or trying to bring about a change in the world by working for the community. A dream of a person can be anything and doesn't always have to be selfless. The claim states that people should pick worthy goals something which is not selfish and should focus on them. I strongly disagree with this statement and believe that a dream of a person should not be bound to something done only for other's sake.

In the current age, every year thousand of people graduate from their universities and many of them dream of a job with a big pay which can help them establish their lives. They work dilligently to achieve that and burn the midnight oil in order to get their dream job. This might sound selfish as it is being done in order to improve their life but in most cases they have to do this in order to earn a livelihood for themselves. They need to be able to afford the basic living amenities in order to survive. If they go for a more selfless goal like serving the community by working as a volunteer for a social cause, even though this will bring about a betterment to the community, it won't bring about much change in the life of the person doing this as he won't be getting much to go through his or her daily life if he or she plans to improve their career in their field. Only if a person is ready to fully commit themselves for the society should they go for a selfless goal.

In India, each year many students enroll themselves in coaching institutions in order to train for the entrance exams which decide whether they get admits for the country's most prestigious institution. They work day and night, solve thousands of questions and giving multiple mock exams. All of this is done to get a good score in the final entrance exams. Here the students are training in order to fulfill their goal of getting into their desired institute. This will help them get into good colleges which will help them ahead in their careers. If they think that they should not be selfish and pick a selfless goal, it will surely help the community but it won't help them much in their career in their desired field. It will infact hamper their career development and they will fall behind in competition. Even though they did helped in developing the society as a whole but if their own life is not improving then it won't be of much help to them in the long run.

Dreams are not something which should be judged based on what change it brings and whether it is selfish or not. It depends on person to person. Some might think of becoming the President of their nation in order to develop it, some might think of becoming a business tycoon in order to gain lots of wealth and some might think of becoming a social worker and give their lives for the society. All of these dreams are different and right for their own reasons. So a person should be free to follow whatever dream they have.
