Due to change in the april 15th resolution in 2020, you no longer need to ask for release but just inform the university that you withdraw your acceptance if you get dominating offer on 16th. So if things go south and the WL go over 16th, you can accept the offer you have and later email them to withdraw. But for good will, I guess it would be always nice to send email politely.

 

"Applicants are not required to obtain a formal release from the program whose offer they accepted, either before or after the April 15 deadline. Once applicants have informed the program that they are withdrawing their acceptance of the offer, they then can accept any other offers."

• Stanford, NYU, UChicago, Columbia, Duke, Brown, Cornell, and UW-Madison have made at least 1 WL offer
• Yale has said that they plan to release some more offers today
• No word on any others (i.e. Penn, Princeton, Michigan, Berkeley, etc.)

Honestly, that's tough (at least for me). Penn would likely have the reputational advantage, but there are very strong & well-known faculty in the area at Wisconsin too. I am not as familiar with the structural metrics placements, but my overall view is that Wisconsin seems to "over achieve" in their placements, while Penn has recently seemed to kind of under achieve in my opinion. From what I have been able to gather, the environment is much more supportive & collaborative at Wisconsin, while Penn seems to have a more "cut throat" mentality. I have heard very mixed things from students regarding the culture at Penn. That kinda thing might not matter much to you, though.

For me, whenever it is hard to choose, I would just for ranking as specific interests can always change anyway. But it depends I guess.

What should I do if waitlisted schools ghosts me till the last second? My waitlists clearly dominates my current offer and have no idea what to do in this last 12 hours..

Reach out to the waitlisted school(s) and ask what your chances of getting in off the waitlist are. Mention that you would accept if they offered you.

Yeah I would say to check with the offer you have as well. Some schools have slightly different deadlines to accept today. Know that deadline, but feel free to accept and reneg if you get offered from the waitlist

I did the same and every second I feel more and more like the wee hours of the night are going to be insane and that tons of people will be withdrawing tomorrow or wednesday

Northwestern’s placements in theory dominate, right? They’ve done extremely well in the last few years.

I chose Northwestern, their placement is crazy and the environment is very supportive. Chicago's faculty does not care much about their students. Columbia is in NYC which is great!
