Any updates on WL in top schools (moving or closed?)? Just curious as April 15th is arriving.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "top schools," but I have heard the following (not necessarily 100% confirmed, though)

  • Stanford, NYU, UChicago, Columbia, Duke, Cornell, and UW-Madison have made at least 1 WL offer
  • Yale has said that they plan to release some more offers today
  • No word on any others (i.e. Penn, Princeton, Michigan, Berkeley, etc.)

Thanks! I also saw some of the results on GC although seems they are not closed yet as I have some WL there not rejected. Hope schools like MIT, Harvard get settled so the process is finalized soon.

Yeah, I don't know of any school in this range that has officially confirmed that they are done sending offers (i.e. 1 friend already got off UChicago WL in the last couple days, but when another friend on the WL asked for an update, they said they are still calculating their numbers & may send more offers. This seems to be the case for many schools).

Hopefully a lot more comes out tomorrow morning once everyone is back in the "office."

Oh wait CEMFI put me out of the waitlist??? I want to know if I should choose CEMFI if I already accepted BSE/UPF...

I highly doubt you will get funding at CEMFI, and I think BSE is the better institution.  I don't think you should change it, unless you have a really strong preference for living in Madrid.

UPF worlds better than CEMFI in Macro  Other fields I think CEMFI equals UPF, at best, everything considered. But still research more about it.

is it normal for waitlists to be this slow?

sadly, yes, this seems to be the new norm. there will of course be movement today (and probably tomorrow tbh)

so what's the play? accept something tonight and then ask for a release if something happens tomorrow?

Due to change in the april 15th resolution in 2020, you no longer need to ask for release but just inform the university that you withdraw your acceptance if you get dominating offer on 16th. So if things go south and the WL go over 16th, you can accept the offer you have and later email them to withdraw. But for good will, I guess it would be always nice to send email politely.

"Applicants are not required to obtain a formal release from the program whose offer they accepted, either before or after the April 15 deadline. Once applicants have informed the program that they are withdrawing their acceptance of the offer, they then can accept any other offers."

Fingers crossed for everyone!

Can I ask where from? Was it over the weekend? I am asking to know from what unis to expect some movement.

How do you guys compare UPenn and Wisconsin for structural econometrics?

Honestly, that's tough (at least for me). Penn would likely have the reputational advantage, but there are very strong & well-known faculty in the area at Wisconsin too. I am not as familiar with the structural metrics placements, but my overall view is that Wisconsin seems to "over achieve" in their placements, while Penn has recently seemed to kind of under achieve in my opinion. From what I have been able to gather, the environment is much more supportive & collaborative at Wisconsin, while Penn seems to have a more "cut throat" mentality. I have heard very mixed things from students regarding the culture at Penn. That kinda thing might not matter much to you, though.

On this final day, I am wishing you all the best of luck. May waitlists move in your favor, may offers flow your way, and most of all may you begin the long road to a PhD in economics. We have all put in so much work to get to this point and don't let any result from today dissuade you from that. Congrats on getting to this point! Only the first step of many on our long roads ahead.

What should I do if waitlisted schools ghosts me till the last second? My waitlists clearly dominates my current offer and have no idea what to do in this last 12 hours..

Reach out to the waitlisted school(s) and ask what your chances of getting in off the waitlist are. Mention that you would accept if they offered you.
