AoA - Travelshack.com Advertisement

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

This is my first attempt to write an Analysis of Argument Essay.

Kindly evaluate it for me. Thanks in Advance.

Question:

The following appeared in the advertising literature of Travelshack.com, an online travel magazine and vacation resort catalogue.

"Your vacation resort can ill afford not to publicize its offerings on Travelshack.com. Our readership has more than doubled in the past year alone and is dominated by savvy consumers with large disposable incomes. Witness the experience of Snowbert Ski Lodge, Since it began advertising itself on our website a year ago, it is regularly booked to capacity and its annual profits have increased more than threefold from the previous year."

Essay:

This topic deals with the advertisement which an online travel magazine and vacation resort catalogue had posted. As per the argument, the resorts which will advertise themselves in this online magazine would profit a lot. Though few numbers have been given, there are flaws in the argument. Hence the argument cannot be said as logically correct.

First of all, the advertisement includes the news about a Ski Lodge which is making profit once it started advertising on the online travel magazine. As nothing else is provided in the argument, one can never be sure that the profit was indeed because of the advertisement. The profit could have been because of many reasons like better management, introduction of new offers, discounts provided etc. If the advertisement had carried some concrete proof, then it would have been logically correct to think that the advertisement indeed was the reason for the Ski Lodge’s profit. Without any concrete proof, it cannot be proven that the advertisement was the sole reason for the Ski Lodge’s increased profit.

Secondly, the advertisement only talks about one resort which benefitted from advertising in the online travel magazine. Though this may be genuine, but it is incorrect to generalize from a single case. It might be that many other resorts who indeed advertise themselves did not find any substantial growth in their profits. So the argument suffers the problem of wrongly applied generalization.

Thirdly, the advertisement mentions that the readership has doubled compared to the past year. This argument is also insufficient without the mentioned of the exact figures. It maybe that in the past year the readership was just in hundreds and now it has reached a few thousand. So we get no information about the exact number of present readership of the magazine.

Fourthly, the advertisement says that the readers include savvy consumers with large disposable incomes. It fails to take into account that even middle income group people also visit such vacation resorts. So the profits cannot just be made from rich costumers.

Considering all the above points, the argument can be concluded as logically faulty. If it has to sound correct then it has to provide some concrete figures and results about other resorts benefitting from the advertisement. Till then the advertisement is marked with logical flaws.
