Avsfan820
So if I get burnt out after five years of grad school in economics, what are typical jobs that PhDs take instead of academia? Ideally I'd like to go academic, but if my research sucks and I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel with placement options, the private sector might hold more allure. Does anyone know where these grads end up?
crslr
World Bank / IMF, government statistical bureaus, academically oriented consulting firms, research departments of banks ... I think the market for econ PhDs is quite good.
Avsfan820
Cool, thanks for the info. Mostly I'm concerned about my colossal student loans and assuaging my parents who want me to go to law school instead. I figure earnings potential + quality of life (after grad school) outweigh the lawyering equivalent. Or at least aren't terribly different. Starvingecon
This paper has great salary info. Basically if you take a job in the private market from a not so great school you will probably make more than ppl in academia coming out of the top schools. Check the tables at the end of the paper. In particular table 5. http://www.aeaweb.org/joe/articles/2004/2004_market.pdf
