"Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increasingly more time to covering national news and less time to covering weather and local news. During the same time period, most of the complaints we received from viewers were concerned with the station's coverage of weather and local news. In addition, several local businesses that used to run advertisements during our late-night news program have just cancelled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to our news programs and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should expand the coverage of weather and local news on all our news programs." Response: While the business manager of the television station has put across the reasons for his change of plans, they seem to be incoherent. Though his memorandum provides effects of the increased devotion to national news, the reasons for its failures are ambiguous. The business manager has received complaints concerning the weather and the local news. These complaints may be about an array of grievances. They could be about the incorrrectness of the weather predictions forecast by their channel for that day. It could involve the timeliness of the issues. They may have broadcasted programs that are outdated and hence, the viewers are furious. It is also possible that they have aired information that has provoked the sentiments of the viewers. He also cites that the local businesses have canceled their advertising contracts. This may arise since the viewers don’t find it a convenient time to watch news. They may have gone to sleep. It is also possible that they have chosen to watch a different television channel. The local businesses may also have been given a better offer by this station's competitors. He also believes that if the national news is braodcast instead, it may attract more viewers. This argument is defective. It is possible that the viewers have migrated to a different station since they find that advertisements in this channel are copious. Thus, even if the weather and local news is replaced, the situation may not alleviate. The business manager does not provide sufficient information to agree with his perspective.
