Universities should require students totake courses only within those fields they are interested in studying.

Instructions

Write a response in which you discussyour views on the policy and explain your reasoning for the position you take.In developing and supporting your position, you should consider the possibleconsequences of implementing the policy and explain how these consequencesshape your position.

A recent scientific study has found that studying foreignlanguage delays the onset of dementia. Study of foreign language is not a requirementin all the universities, but it can benefit people later in their life. While some people may agree that universitiesshould require students to choose the subjects according to their wish, whereas,a robust knowledge can be obtained through an eclectic approach. In my view, university education should not require students to take courses only withintheir fields of interest but it must be a combination of both the subjects ofinterests and few subjects from various fields.

If we look at the curriculum of medical science we can seethat besides studying physiology, biochemistry and other subjects related tothe field of medicine, the students also have to study medical law. Well, wemight think that an enthusiastic medical student may not be interested in rulesand regulation, but medical law is a vital part of their curriculum. Withoutknowledge of the medical laws a doctor may unintentionally commit a crime andend up in losing his/her degree. Thusstudying boring subjects may help in our later life.

Consider the example of a Psychology student. The field of Psychologyhas many concentrations. Initially a student may be interested in clinicalpsychology and during his university he/she only took courses related to it.Later he may find that he/she does not have the capability to interact withpeople and he/she only loves studying. But, if the university required that apsychology students to take all the basic courses in other concentrations ofpsychology, then the student could get the opportunity to match his interestswith his ability. Studying various subjects helps students to explore their interests.

On the other hand, an avid student studying courses withinhis interests may increase the student’s knowledge within the field and helphim to be an expert within the field and can also have good grades. But thismay not be true for all the students. If we take the example to Sigmund Freud, then we can see that basically he was a physician, but later he became thefather of Psychoanalysis.

In conclusion it is clear that human beings’ interests andthe need to know diverse knowledge do change their later life. That is whyuniversities should motivate or require the students to study other subjectsalong with the fields of their interests.
