Erin
Whew! This is one of the most advanced grammar questions I know, and it comes up a lot, both on the TOEFL and on the GMAT. To answer this question, we need to understand this: As far as is known = As far as it is known We often use as as a relative pronoun when the subject is what we call the "empty it," i.e., it that has no referent. HTH!! (Hope that helps!!) Erin Please post further questions here. Please search this newsgroup for FAQs & search TestMagic.com from the bottom of every page.
