"As" as a rel. pron.

Q)____________ , dolphins have no sense of smell.

 

A) As known as far

B) Known thus far as

C) It is known as far

D) As far as is known

 

D) is correct. If the second "as" is rel. pron in D).

 

what is the referent? and what is the "As far"?

Whew! This is one of the most advanced grammar questions I know, and it comes up a lot, both on the TOEFL and on the GMAT.

 

To answer this question, we need to understand this:

 

As far as is known = As far as it is known

 

We often use as as a relative pronoun when the subject is what we call the "empty it," i.e., it that has no referent.
