samarfadl
hiii my friends :) Would you please help me with this reading question? I'm confused about the answer  Please, choose the correct answer and explain your choice.. Thanks in advance :) At higher latitudes, the freezing and melting also contribute to thermal inertia. In winter, latent heat is released as ice forms on the cooling surface of the water. The phrase contribute to in paragraph 7 is closest in meaning to: a) take part in b) donate to c) play a part in d) detract from The correct answer is: © Why didn't we choose (a) ??
wasleys
We take part in (eg) games. We donate to charity (donate = give).
samarfadl
hiii wasleys :) Thank you for your reply. However, I'm still confused... I took take part in as an answer, but the book says that play a part in is the correct answer!! I think that this sentence (play a part in) is used when we are talking about an actor who is playing a role in a movie for example... am I right??!! Thank you again, wasleys for your time :) Have a nice day :)
wasleys
Yes, you are right about play a part in. But it can also be used to mean have an effect as in the question. (Mind you in common usage contribute can also mean the same as donate, but not in this question. Confused? So am I, and I've been speaking the language from the cradle. Welcome to the joys of the English language!)
