chengchengjia
Specifically I'm asking for Columbia, since I just got their email "Deferred Funding" None for first year, 2-5 years is guaranteed. I was wondering if I still have to pay tuition in the first year? I looked up their website, and didn't find any clear statement on it... Tuition seems to be a huge burden... kipfilet
Depends on the institution I guess, you should e-mail and ask about it.

OneArmedEcon
At my school, students who did not receive first year funding had to take out a loan to cover tuition. Clarify with the institution in question, but in most places, no funding means no tuition waiver.
chengchengjia
Thanks...OK...At least I can get loan, which is good. I don't want to ask money from my parents any more...
ryanmagic
International students cannot get loan, I think.
HHmetrics
Did your email specifically say "None for first year, 2-5 years is guaranteed"? This seems to be different from some ppl, in their email it's " full tuition, health insurance, stipend, summer funding, and most fees for 5 years"
Guest 8675309
IT depends on the country. Student loans are from your own country, some countries don't have good loan infra structure. Others do. However, if you are from a third world country, call the department and explain you really want to come, but its hard for you too afford it because of y. Members of my extended family got some funding this way. You have nothing to lose. Of course I wouldn't do that if it isn't difficult for you to come without funding. It also will be tougher because of the economic situation of many schools.
chengchengjia
I quote ""This means that you will not get any funding from Columbia in year One, but you will get full funding in years 2-5. Full funding includes tuition, a stipend, fees, health insurance, and summer money. "
chengchengjia
Thanks all! Your suggestions are really helpful!
to2012
The inclusion of tuition in the itemized list of year 2-5 benefits strongly implies that you would be required to pay full tuition during your first year.
