  1. How about going to the industry? Is it someone's own preference (do they pay considerably more?) or is it normally because bad luck/performance in academia job market? Another question is about postdoc. Some people do postdoc afterwards. But I didn't find a page about placement after postdoc. Who do postdoc and what they end up with? An improvement in placement?
  2. Ideally stay in Davis ARE forever LOL. I don't know what does "public policy school" mean, do you mean some state universities? Or you mean "law/sociology" departments? I don't know how they work but I am not against them. I do feel interested in applying economics theories to policy evaluations.
  3. Ideally in academia. But will also be happy to go to public sector.
  4. Thanks EnvEcon. From your response I assume UMD lays their emphasis more on macro, is it true? Surely they lays more emphasis on macro than any ARE program does. But what I am trying to say is, for someone who's not interested in macro, how big is the advantage of UMD over Davis ARE? I only have a rough idea, regretfully. What's your advice on how to develop this idea? I surely should have a better idea than what I have. I know some faculty members from courses and saw some others wandering around. Maybe the problem is sadly I still haven't developed a strong commitment in any specific research topic... Yes, that's why I asked why resource said it's "marginally". Let alone the funding situation, I do have a location preference towards Davis. If it's only "marginally" then the decision would be easier for me.
  5. Hi resource could you explain this more? How "marginally" UMD Econ is better than Davis ARE. Because I think I may end up choice between UMD Econ (Without $$) and (hopefully) Davis ARE (with $$). I am really curious how you know which professor is stronger or helpful in job market. I really don't have time to read all their papers so I guess it is not the right way. Are there any indexes you can use? Same question for you nat_resource, I guess what I am asking is the method to choose a right prof. Are you gathering information by talking to people in department or... something else? My interest is primarily development. But I am also open to ag., resource, experimental... My ultimate goal is to find a decent job in California. Thanks in advance.
  6. Similar situation happens to me, twice.
  7. I would say, try UC Davis ARE M.S. program. I saw many people lose there passion to do PhD when they are in M.S. level class. It's only a one-year program, won't cost too much time. And if you doing really well, you will be promoted to the ARE PhD program. If you don't do well, you can find a job with a M.S.. Go to industry or as Walras said, M.S. is enough for college teaching job.
  8. I simply replied to that email and ask should I create a CollegeNet. And got a reply several minutes later. With my decision letter. It's a rejection. :blue:
  9. That's true. I intended to use an earlier test score at first. But Berkeley says they only accept test taken recently (i.e. after Jun 2010).
  10. Thanks for your inputs guys. I heard from Berkeley that their review process may end in early March. So they want me to reschedule and let's cross fingers to wish it can arrive in time...
  11. I took a TOEFL test on Dec 17. And today I receive a letter from ETS: I check the test date, the earliest is on Feb 3. So I guess I will miss all the deadlines! What should I do? Opinions?
