  8. Ironically, the proper use of figurative language must be based on the denotative meaning of the words, because it is the failure to recognize this ------- meaning that leads to mixed metaphors and their attendant incongruity. (A) esoteric (B) literal © latent (D) allusive (E) symbolic

  10. A recent six-month study, in which breakfast was made available at school for 100 schoolchildren age’s five to twelve, found that children on the breakfast plan were less likely than other children to be absent from or late for school. Clearly, eating breakfast before school plays a role in reducing student absenteeism and tardiness. It is also well known that children who regularly eat a healthful breakfast tend to perform better in school. Therefore, in order to reduce absenteeism and tardiness and to improve academic performance in all of Mylar's elementary and secondary schools, we should provide breakfasts for all students before each school day." Though the author is correct in saying that good breakfast is helpful for student but it does not provide any substantial proof to evince this fact. Moreover the study seems to be limited to bring out any genuine result .The study done seems to be specious .So though the apparent feeling is that the claims made by author is correct but if we collate we find that many statements are fraught with unsubstantiated claims. The first unsubstantiated proof is the study itself that included 100 students. Here the age group taken is five to twelve years though Mylar is elementary and secondary school. It might be that less age students were taken to get the desired results. Small children are docile and they obey whatever they are told to do. It might be that these students were compelled to have the breakfast and reach the school on time. It may be that if they did not do as they were told to then they would be punished. Moreover it may be that the breakfast was made available in the school campus so students were bound to be in school in time. The school should look for more genuine reason to check the student’s absenteeism and tardiness and improve upon them. The other claim of the author that is unsubstantiated is the claim that healthful breakfast leads to perform better in school. There is no proof given to substantiate the claim that having breakfast helped the students to improve their performance. There is no indication any tests conducted to show that the students under the study excelled over students who did not have breakfast. The author claim would become stronger if more stats of comparison were given. The author has just stated the facts without any solid evidence to bolster it. The conclusion that the author has drawn in order to reduce absenteeism and tardiness and to improve academic performance in all of Mylar's elementary and secondary schools that is to “provide breakfasts for all students before each school day" may work against the school. The students have different tastes .It would not be possible for the school to cater to every body’s taste, so they students may skip their class so as to eschew the breakfast. So the policy may work against the school. So I would like to assert that though the author’s claim that healthful breakfast leads to better performance and also eliminate absenteeism and tardiness would be more forceful when more stats are given. Moreover a comparison between the students in the study and excluded from study should be provided. The age of students under study should also be increased. This will bring more versatility to the claim. Please help me to get some more genuine arguments…i 'll b greatful if u correct on my fallacies.. thx
