  1. My top six choices in that order are: - Harvard - Wharton - Kellog - Chicago - NYU - Columbia All above the above, except Harvard, are known for their solid finance programs. Of course I am not sure if I want to go in specifically for Finance. Besides these, MIT also has a strong quant program. I am not sure about Stanford.
  2. Hey there TestTaker2003, Thanks for the vote of confidence. I have talked to numerous people and most of them have advised me against taking it. Let me frame the question in a slightly different way: Above like 700-720, does it make a difference what you get? I imagine a certain 'wow!' factor associated with a score of 770-780, but with 730, you get a respectable nod. Besides, if you want to get into a well ranked quant based program such as Finance at Wharton, I would assume that they would look for strong math. I do believe that your GMAT quant score (or verbal for that matter) is not a representative of your true capability, but do schools believe the same thing? The question is, how often do schools look at the quant and verbal breakup of someone's scores? Another quick question - what are the maximum possible quant and verbal scores? I thought for quant, it was 53 and verbal was in the high 40's. Is that correct? What I don't understand is how with a 45 verbal, I am 99th percentile, but with a 46 quant, I am only 80th percentile. And yet, with the relatively poor performance on Quant, I land with a 97th percentile overall. Are the individual scores scaled or is it just the final score that is scaled? Meaning
  3. On second thoughts, I think that the difficulty level of questions increased marginally from the beginning. However, given that the questions in the beginning were so tricky, that means that the questions were difficult throughout. If I had seen some of those questions as the last 4-5 ones I would not have been surprised at all. But they just kept coming. I thought about the first 5-6 questions being experimental ones and was looking for a break - but that never really happened. There was a lot of algebra questions - almost 30% seemed to be algebra. 1 probability, about 2 combinations, 3-4 were 'odd-ball' word problems (as described in Kalpan 800), one mixtures problem, NO work/speed problems. That's all I can think of right now. later....
  4. Hi there... I really haven't had time to think, but I am pretty sure that about 60-70% of the questions were as tough as or tougher than the last 50 questions in the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip]. I am sure these questions were doable, but for me - not in the time alloted. My timing strategy required that I leave a question if I couldn't solve it in 3-4 minutes and I was running behind schedule question 4 onwards. As a result, I was always chasing the clock and giving up or best-guessing. The last few practice tests I took, I could finish the Math section with 5-10 mins early. I haven't done the Kaplan CD. But I have done Kaplan 800. I can swear that atleast 4-5 questions on the test were as tough as ones on Kaplan 800. But then again, it could all be my perception since by question 10 I had lost my nerve and confidence. I am going to sleep on it tonite and see if I can paint a more objective picture tomorrow. Will post in if I change my mind.
  5. Just finished my test less than two hours ago. Results: Total: 730 (97th percentile) Quant: 46 (80 percentile!!!) Verbal: 45 (99 percentile) Here were my scores from practice tests: Powerprep 1: 710 Powerpre 2: 770 ETS Paper Test (#55): 750 Princeton Review 1: 690 Princeton Review 2: 730 Kalpan 1: 630 800score, Crack GMAT: Betwen 550 - 660 This had to be the most harrowing experience ever. Since I had read on this board that Powerprep and ETS Paper test scores are the most indicative of the 'REAL DEAL', I felt faily confident that I would score 750+ on my test. However, THE QUANT SECTION WAS A F*****G B***H!!! The first few questions were quiet difficult, and I guessed on at least 2 out of the first 6. After that I COMPLETELY lost my nerve. On at least a couple of questions it took me a good 2-3 mins even to understand what they were trying to say - the wording was convoluted at best! There was not a single goddamn straightforward question! I just read a previous poster say the same thing. Math in powerprep and in the ETS paper tests was LAME compared to what I saw on the test. I was cussing myself for not having practiced enough (Although I did go through the Kaplan 800 book cover to cover and did fairly well on the Quant questions in there). I don't know whether it was that I lost my nerve or that the questions were in fact REALLY difficult throughout the test! Like the previous poster, I thought about cancelling my scores. I must have been unsure of at least 1/4 th of my answers and blindly guessed on at least 3-4!!! However, the verbal section was a breeze. Now again, I don't know whether it was because I regained my nerves or because the section was easy. The way I have looked at verbal is that once you are good with the material, they can't throw anything too bad at you. And, I had gotten really good at verbal before I took the test. Pus, you can't make silly mistakes in the verbal section. The verbal questions did get difficult towards the end, but overall I felt that I had answered most correctly. I really contemplated cancelling my scores, but curiosity got the better of me. I was fully expecting to see 650-670, but then I saw a 730! The administrator lady looked at my scores and said "excellent kiddo - now u can go to Stanford'. If only it were THAT easy! I took the test on the West Coast - South San Francisco Center. I have read some testers discuss the possibility that location might have something to do with the test. Hey - at this point, I will believe ANYTHING!! Anybody else have any comment on that? In summation I really don't know how to feel. Overall I am glad that I crossed 700, but getting 80th percentile in Math has taken the edge out of my satisfaction. I am good at math and did better on quant sections than on verbal in ALL my practice tests. I was NOT expecting this. Here is a Question for you guys - (And no one has ever responded to any of my posts, so please reply to this one!!): Will schools hold 80th percentile in Math against me?!! I am looking at Top 5 schools and have a computer science undergrad with an average GPA (3.3). Will they look at my overall scores and be horrified by my Math scores??!! I am a)an Indian and b)Computer Science Major. Don't mean to offend anyone, but I fit the cliche of people who do well on Quant!! I am BUMMED! Many of you might call me stupid, but I am contemplating giving the test again. Just because I don't know how schools will take the low Quant score. I am confident that I can duplicate my verbal score - my quant can only go higher (or can it!!) PLEASE ADVISE!!
  6. I had a quick question regarding the analysis of an issue essay on the GMAT. Does one HAVE to pick one side of an argument? Can one not argue that both sides have some truth in them? Thus, can one not pick an argument neither completely agrees or disagrees with any of the opposing arguments mentioned? Here is an essay i wrote on one of the powerprep tests that does just that. Please let me know. I am taking the test tomorrow! "A business should not be held responsible for providing customers with complete information about its products or services; customers should have the responsibility of gathering information about the products or services they may want to buy." Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion stated above. Support your views with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading. =============================================== My essay Many argue that businesses are responsible for providing customers with complete information about their products and services, while others believe that it is the responsibility of customers to gather this information on their own. There is no one correct answer to this argument, and a fair resolution may may vary depending on the situation. Assuming a basic level of honesty on the both sides, the two transacting parties need to share the responsbility of getting the correct information divulged before the transaction. Having said that, a greater burden probably lies on the entity that is selling the product or service since it is the initiator of the transaction. The transaction would not be possible without the product or service being offered and hence the entity offering the product or service is responsible for providing first level information that truthfully describes their offering. Due to time, space or financial constraints it might not be possible for businesses to divulge ALL information through its intial medium of communication, most likely to be a marketing vehicle such as an advertisement. Yes, it is the responsibility of businesses to provide customers with complete information about their products or services, but the correct information may depend on who the customer is. For example, a consulting company selling strategic consulting services can only furnish so much information before understanding the customers needs. Since it serves a wide array of customers, not all kinds of information will be applicable to all customers. After having reviewed this basic information if a customer decides to engage in a transaction, it becomes her responsibility to find out more details about the product offering. The business then needs to treat customer's demand for more information as her right and assume the burden of furnishing accurate information that answer the customer's questions. At any point in the transaction, if this exchange of information becomes too much of a burden for either of the transaction parties, they should have the right to abandon the transaction. Operating under such guidelines, there is a greater likelihood of achieving a fair transaction, rather than pusing the responsibility entirely on one side. As transcating parties, both the business and the customer share the responsibility of getting the correct information across.
  7. A telephone number has 7 digits. If the digit '0' is used exactly three times and the digit '1' is not used at all, what is the probability that the phone number contains at least one or more prime digits? a - 1/24 b - 1/16 c - 1/2 d - 15/16 e - 23/24. Ans: D How??
  8. The answet in princeton review was incorrect!! Software glitch. The correct answer should be 19!
  9. Sorry the picture got messed up. Here it is again: -----| -----|---------------------b (0,8) |---------------------.-------- L1 -----| -----| -----|------a (0,5) |------.----------------------- L2 -----| -----| 7 -----|------.-------------------------------> -----|
  10. | | b (0,8) |---------------------.-------- L1 | | | a (0,5) |------.----------------------- L2 | | 7 |------.-------------------------------> | Alright, maybe I am not seeing something very obvious here. In the co-ordinate plane above, L1 and L2 are parallel, and point a on L2 is exactly 13 units from point b on L1. What is the x-coordinate of point b? a - 19 b - 17 c - 15 d - 12 e - 8 --------------- Using pythagorean theorem we can get that the point directly underneath point b is on line L2 is 12 units away from point a L2. Shouldn't then the x-coord of b be 12+7 = 19? Princeton review says the correct answer is 12. How? Thanks!
  11. Which one is the correct idiom: 'Contrast to' OR 'Contrast with' The PR Grammar smart book says 'Contrast with' Kaplan says 'Contrast to' !! Thanks
  12. I understand that collective nouns like family, jury, everyone, crowd, jury, etc are singular and hence take singular verbs. But,how about pronouns - do they also take singular pronouns? For example: Bob's family is wondering if these is anything (they,it) can do? Family takes the singular verb, but which pronoun does it take - 'they' or 'it'? And why? Similarly: The jury decided that (they,it) would give the maximum penalty. I am within a week of taking my test and was suddenly boggled by this!! Thanks!
  13. Looks like it is a site based out of the UK. I bought 5 GMAT CATs from them for $19. They call their tests low-scoring tests. I scored about 650 in one of them. Questions were a little different and harder than the other tests I have taken. They say that normally one would score about 100 points higher on the regular gmat. Anybody else have any experience?
