  1. These are from an 800score practice test. Any feedback that you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated. What do you think each of these would be scored? Thank you. ISSUE________________________________________________________ Being occasionally dishonest is a good way to maintain relationships with friends and loved ones. How would you rate the accuracy of the above statement? Support your position with reasons and examples. Whether or not to tell the truth to friends and loved ones is an issue that everyone deals with at some point in their life. An occasional lie won't hurt anyone they tell themselves. While this may hold true if one never gets caught, this is hardly ever the case. A careful look at the issue demonstrates why it is beneficial to relationships in the long run to be honest. Relationships with friends and loved ones are based on trust. Being dishonest direclty violates this trust and threatens the relationship. A good example is a married couple. If one lies to their spouse about their whereabouts (even if they were not doing anything wrong) and gets caught this is sure to put strain on the relationship and therefore cause further marital problems problems. While proponants of being occasionally dishonest may say that the secret lies in not getting caught, this is nearly an impossiblity. When spending day in and day out with someone one is going to get caught up in their lies. In other words, the truth is going to come out. Another benefit of telling the truth consistantly is that one never has to worry about "getting their story straight." When attempting to maintain relationships among multiple friends or loved ones everyone needs to have been told the same thing. If not, different stories are bound to collide and bring out the lies that have been told. Take for example a teenager who tells his parents that he or she was sleeping over a friends and the friends parents that they were sleeping over his or her house. Well the next time the two sets of parents speak to each other, the truth is going to be found out, that the teenagers spent the night somewhere else. This is going to violate the trust between parents and child on both accounts and strain both relationships between parents and children. In conclusion, while one can hope to get away with the occasional lie to cover up a misdoing or perhaps spare ones feelings, in the long run the truth is likely to come out. When it does the relationship that one intended to salvage will be damaged significantly more then it would have been helped by dishonesty. It turns out, in the long run, that honesty is the best policy. ARGUMENT_____________________________________________________ A recent study with a researcher pretending to have a broken down car on the side of the road showed that when the researcher was a man, 60% of the time, a man pulled over to help them, and 0% of the time a woman stopped to help. When the researcher was a woman, 70% of the time a man stopped to help, and 20% of the time a woman stopped to help. This study shows how all men are more naturally altruistic than women. It also shows that women care more about helping women than men. How would you rate the accuracy of the above statement? Support your position with reasons and examples. The results of the study to see how often members of the same and opposite sex pull over to help a distressed driver on the side of the road are in. The conclusion that the author has drawn from this study is that all men are more naturally altruistic than women and that women care more about helping women than men. This conclusion, however, is based on the limited statistical information provided and therefore calls upon the reader to make several assumptions in order to accept it as valid. The first assumption that the reader is forced to make in order to validate the conclusion is that the numbers provided are statistically significant. In other words, that they have any meaning. The author never states how long each man and woman researcher pretented to be broken down for or how many people actually stopped. We are simply told that for the man 60% of the time a man stopped to help and a woman never did. For the woman, 70% of the time a man stopped and 20% of the time a woman did. What are these numbers percents of? Did 10 people stop to help or 10,000? As readers we have no idea. Without a sample size we cannot possibly make a generalization about "all men" as is done in the conclusion. In addition, was the sample size of people that stopped for the man researcher and woman researcher the same and were the researchers stationed in the same location at the same time of day? Without any of this information, we cannot come to a conclusion based on th! is study. There are simply too many variables. The second assumption the reader is called to make is that just because more men stopped to help woman than woman did that makes men more altruistic. Perhaps there was some other motive for stopping. If the woman researcher was extremely attractive that alone could explain why 70% of the time a man stopped to help. On the other side, if the man researcher was extremely unattracitve, it could explain why no woman stopped to help. The conclusion drawn from this experiment could therefore be that looks do matter in every day situations. The third assumption made is that woman care more about helping woman than they do men. However, we do not know why no woman stopped to help the male reasercher. Perhaps he was broken down on a road that led to a predominatnly male golf club and almost all of the traffic going by consisted of male drivers. Another possibility is that female drivers are intimitated by the idea of helping a man. Either way, the conclusion that woman care more about helping woman is invalid. In conclusion, the author needed to provide more concrete evidence to support his conclusion. The passage needed more information such as the number of people that stopped instead of just percents. In addition, the author needed to proove to the reader that the experiment was controlled and that there were a limited number of variabels influenceing the outcome. This could have been done by stating that the experiment was conducted in the same place for each the male and female researcher, during the same time of day, and that the same number of people stopped for each. Also it would have to be shown that the both researchers were of similiar attractiveness in order to rule out alterior motives for stopping to help. Without any of this information, the conclusion drawn about "all men and woman" forces the reader to assume too much and is therefore easily dismissed and invalid.
  2. So can you write on BOTH sides of these boards, in essence giving you almost 10 pages to work with.. or are they on sided, almost like clipboards? Thanks.
  3. Well that would be nice to attend a full time program, however, Im not sure I would be willing to leave my job. I am also in the process of getting my own place so it is nice to have a salary. Do you think that part time would not be beneficial to my career.. I certainly hope it will help me to land a position with a business oriented firm. While I am 90 percent sure this is the route I want to take.. I am open to suggestions.
  4. GMATBong, Thanks for your quick reply. What I hope to get out of an MBA is to take my career from academia (that is, working at NYU) to working for a business institution .. maybe wall street. I would like to stick with my technical roots in IT and work as a consultant or even in support at first for one of these companies. Im hoping that the experience I will have attending classes at NYU will further my skills and make me attractive to one of these companies. I'm also looking forward to fully utilizing whatever career services are availible to me. Full-time would be great, however, I simply cannot afford it. The reason part-time is perfect for me right now is because as a full time employee at NYU I can obtain this degree through tuition remission. Further insight would be appreciated. Thanks again for your help, and quick response. Back to studying.. GMAT is next saturday and I need that 700+.
  5. GMATBong, As I have been reading these forums I have noticed that you have given a lot of helpful information and advice to other message board members based on their admissions "stats." I would be greatful if you could do the same for me. I am a 23 year old white male from Brooklyn NY and am very hopefull that I will be attending NYU's Stern School in Fall 06. I graduated with an honors degree in Informations Systems from the R.H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland this past Spring in the top 10 percent of my class (3.6 overall GPA and 3.8 Major). After graduation I took a job at NYU (hoping for tuition remission upon acceptance to graduate school). I am working at NYU in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience as a Computer and Network Technician (it's a tech support job) and will have only about 15 months work experience by the start of the Fall 06' semester. Next week I am taking the GMAT and in practice tests have been scoring anywhere from 690-720 consistantly. I am hoping to achieve at least a 700 on the actual exam with at least a 4.5 - 5 on the AWA section. With these "stats" and really solid reccomendations and application essays.. do you think that I have a good shot at acceptance into the part time program at New York University. I appreciate any insight that you could give me. Thanks.
