  1. Hi everyone. I'm in a bit of a funk and would really appreciate some advice. I've just accepted the ASEE SMART fellowship and the work commitment is one year of service at a DoD agency (I have 'some' say in where I will be placed) per year of funding I receive. However, in hindsight, I'm a little scared that I may totally and utterly hate the job (I have about another 4 years to go for my PhD) when I finish. Can anyone shed some light on the work culture at a DoD lab/agency? I'd really appreciate it. Does anyone even know if the starting pay is half decent? Thanks so much - Bruce

  3. Congrats again to you Prusd u must be one happy camper! :) i've been thinking of applying for this course myself.. i imagine the name of the course sounds EXTREMELY appealing to employers! I've just been a little nervous since I did my undergrad in England and am dubious about breaking into a US Ivy institute.. Would you mind sharing your complete profile with us? I'm sure it would probably help a lot of us, giving us a benchmark to base ourselves on... Thanks Brucie!
  4. hi NJIT, Surely the 3 colleges u mentioned verified your LORs and transcripts DURING the admissions process right? Nothing after...?
  5. hi everyone, congrats to those who got HMs @ least from the NSF.. I don't think anyone's posted a fellowship offer yet.. so you guys are the best so far! :) I'm keen on applying to the NSF this year too.. does anyone know if I'll be eligible, since I'm wstarting grad school this year too? Also, does anyone have a nice document describing how to go about applying for this fellowship? My email address is BruceScav@lycos.com... Their web site has too much mumbo jumbo! Thanks in advance you guys.. Bruce

  7. Wendy - I'm not too sure.. I think if you get good recommendations from your supervisor you should be set. Again; I'm not too sure!

  9. hi NJIT thanks for the quick reply.. are you really sure about this? I always knew Stanford was good.. but MIT has a great rep as well dont you think...? Especially for being a math/computing powerhouse! What if there was a chance of transferring a PhD program @ MIT.. then would things be different? tks... Bruce
  10. hi everyone, i've been admitted to masters program in computational math @ both stanford and MIT. i don't know which one to take because, I really want to do my PhD eventually. stanford gives me the option of transferring directly to the PhD program after my first year, if I pass the qualifying exam. MIT has no such arrangement though... assuming the program @ MIT takes a year, I finish in Sep 07. that means I'll have to re-submit a PhD application (which isn't guaranteed to make it!) to start in Sep 08.. i don't want to waste a year doing nothing! (i'd rather be studying than working in a research lab) Does anyone know how deadlines work @ MIT? are there rolling deadlines so people dont have the dilemma i'm facing now? Obviously, the name MIT is a factor... plus i think the course is genuinely a little better then the one @ Stanford... thanks everyone, any input is appreciated... BS

  12. Hi TMs, so frustrated with Yale. U cant email in, cos all you get is an auto response. Even the lady on the phone said "i'm not sure how we'll inform you of the decision. It MIGHT be an email.. or maybe a letter. It's a 'rolling' process, so we can't give you any dates either" Also, does anyone have any idea why they're taking so long to respond to some MS applicants? (I applied for Applied Math) Sorry, just needed to vent something, somewhere :D Brucie
  13. Hi all, Just to let you know I was rejected from the MIT OR program today. Received word via email. I guess it's a reach for anyone huh? In case you'll want to know, my stats are GRE: 800Q, 480V, 4.5 AWA Graduated first class honours from top 3 uni in Europe, top 15% of batch. Good Recs + SOP, 1 submitted paper. Good luck to you others! BS :)
