  8. "A recent sales study indicated that consumption of seafood dishes in Bay City restaurants has increased by 30 percent over the past five years. Yet there are no currently operating city restaurants that specialize in seafood. Moreover, the majority of families in Bay City are two-income families, and a nationwide study has shown that such families eat significantly fewer home-cooked meals than they did a decade ago but at the same time express more concern about eating healthily. Therefore, a new Bay City restaurant specializing in seafood will be quite popular and profitable." The author concludes that Bay City restaurant should specialize in seafood which in turn would be quite popular and profitable. He supports his conclusion by giving facts such as the consumption of seafood dishes has increased by 30% over the past five years. He also mentions that there are no restaurants in that area which specialize in seafood. The majority of families in the area are two income families which by a survey conducted have shown to eat less home food and express more concern to eat a healthy diet. The argument at the first glace appears specious and fails to convince that specializing in seafood would be quiet popular and profitable to the Bay City restaurant. First of all the author mentions that the consumption of seafood dishes have increased by 30 percent over the past five years. It is quiet obvious that 30 percent increase is not of much significant and substantial value for the Bay City restaurant to specialize in sea food. Had it been much more then it would be a better option to specialize in seafood dishes. The author fails to mention the demand for the seafood dishes among the people there. Secondly the author states that there are currently no city restaurants which specialize in seafood. By this the author assumes that it’s the Bay City restaurant which provides the sea food. It may be the case that seafood may not be that popular among the people in the city so none of the restaurants which specialize in sea food. He fails to mention the Geographical location of the city as to know how easy it would be for the city to import seafood from nearby places if the particular city mentioned here is not close to the sea.To make the argument stronger he should have given reasons for no restaurants specializing in seafood. Furthermore he also mentions that most of the people are two income families which according to a survey prefer to eat out and also prefer more healthy food. The author here fails to mention the health benefits of eating seafood. He has provided no evidence to show how healthy sea food is. Had he given these examples it would have made the argument stronger and more convincing. He also mentions that people living there prefer to eat out. Eating out does not imply they may eat only seafood. He fails to mention the preferences of people as to what they would prefer to eat if they go out for lunch or dinner. Therefore in conclusion I would like the say that the argument is full of loop holes. Had the author taken in consideration the above mentioned facts it would have rendered the argument irrefutable.

  19. 1.People attend college or university for many different reasons (for example, new experiences, career preparation, increased knowledge). Why do you think people attend college or university? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. Different people have different reasons for attending college. Some people attend college so that they can gain more knowledge; some people hope find a good job after they graduate from college; some people have plans to pursue with their further study when they graduate and some people aim to make new friends and face new experiences when they join college. In my opinion, whatever may be the reason for which people study in colleges, however it’s just a preparation for their future life. In my opinion, one of the most important reasons to attend a college or university is to gain knowledge. People tend to learn more when they are in groups. Learning is process in which one learns more and more through experiences. We know that it’s the practice and the experience that makes a man perfect. When people are in college they learn more through the practical experiments which are conducted in colleges. Another most important reason to join colleges is to pursue further education. People who aim for post graduation degree need a graduate degree to enter into the post graduate programs. Some doctoral programs also require some pre-requisites which are only fulfilled when one graduates from college. The other important reason to study in colleges is to get a good job when you graduate from college. There are lots of campus recruitment programs in which companies directly recruit their trainees from colleges. Thus, having a good job after graduating from college is one of the most important reason for people to join college. Also college or universities offer you much more independence than schools where your life is mostly influenced by your teachers and parents. In colleges there is more freedom. People in colleges are more influenced by the group of friends. In colleges there are no restrictions from teachers and parents. It is up to you to plan your schedule when you are in college. Also college is a place where people face new experiences and make new friends. Thus I would like to conclude saying that college is a place where people come under one roof to gain more knowledge, to share their experiences and also to acquire the future aims in their life. 2. How do movies or television influence people’s behavior? Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer. Ans. I strongly believe that television greatly influences people’s behavior. It is an undeniable fact that most people in the world have access to either a television or a cinema theatre and do make use of them at a regular basis. Some of the ways in which such media can influence people’s behavior is stated as follows. Teenager population is one which is most targeted by such media. Teenagers often tend to imitate their role-models whom they see on television. They try to do the same stunts which their role-models do in the television advertisements. Sometimes these advertisements even make no sense, but presence of the celebrity promoting for the product makes a difference. This may prove deleterious to the teenagers trying to imitate the stunts which their role-models do in those advertisements. Secondly, each country or region has its own culture and it is necessary to preserve them in order to exhibit cultural diversity to future generations. There are a lot of programs and scenes that are being broadcast on televisions and in movies that might not conform to the mindset of the local society. But sometimes young people get influenced by these scenes. They get a false impression that they too should live their life the way people live in foreign movies. They tend to change themselves according to what they see. This might destroy the native practices and customs, which is highly undesirable. Also, some of the movies and programs on television contain lot of adult content which in turn may be not advisable for children. In addition to this, children watching more television and movies will pay less attention to studies which in turn may have an adverse effect on their studies. In conclusion I would like to say that television greatly influences the minds of the people and it is up to us to look into this matter and find suitable solutions to such problems.

  21. 3. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Grades (marks) encourage students to learn. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion. I strongly agree with the statement that grades encourage students to learn. Students may get good grades to impress their parents and teachers but grades serve as a source of motivation and also encourage them to learn more. Some ways in which grades can help the students learn more can be stated as follows. Grading the students helps the teachers to know the capability of a particular student. When the students are graded in their examination in a class they come to know where they stand in the class. Suppose a student does not fare well in his examination and does not get a good grade. This further would motivate him to do good in his future examinations and try to get a better grade. Grading also helps the students to know where they go went wrong so that they do not repeat those mistakes. Students, especially children have always a tendency to get good grades to impress their teachers and parents. This may further motivate them to work harder to get good grades and finally learn more. Grading system also gives a structured environment in the class where the students will be encouraged to study hard and learn more in the fear to fare well in the exams. Imagine if there were no such grading system it would be impossible to distinguish between the students. Also grading system also enables them to learn more, as getting good grades would be a criteria to get an admission to a good graduate school when the students want to pursue further education. In conclusion i would like to say that grades have a vital influence on the students and do encourage them to learn more to fare well in the exams.
