  1. Hi all! I am planning to do my Ph.D in molecular biology from a very good university (in Us,aus, canada or Uk;it does not matter as long as i am selected in real good uni). I request you to please help me in my uni selection according to my profile. My profile is as under:- GPA- 3.9/4.0 ( 1st rank in uni in both UG & PG) GRE score:- 1440(Q760 & V 680) TOEFL:- 270 Writing:5.5 Publications:- none Work Experience:- none Practical training:- 6 months at GCRI (Cancer research Institute) At present - has enrolled for a diploma course in clinical research and is under talk with my UG professor to teach as a visiting faculty in UG. Will get LOR from my UG HOD (now my college principal) and from my teacher (who now is HOD of biochem dept), and from my HOD of PG course and if necessary from another teacher who is a Co-ordinator. They are willing to co-operate in every possible way in writing my LOR. SOP- I am confident (not over-confident) that i shall be able to draft a nice and cogent SOP. The universities that i am aiming for are:- UK:- Cambridge Oxford Imperial College. AUSTRALIA:- UNSW Melbourne uni CANADA:- Uni of Toronto SWEDEN:- Karolinska Uni US:- Stanford uni MIT Uni of California (Berkeley) John Hopkin's Yale Purdue uni Uni of california- San Diego Uni of Michigan-Ann Arbor Duke Uni Baylor Coll of medicine-TX) Rockefeller uni Guys now tell me am i aiming too high or do i have chances of being any of these uni of my choice?I knw that having no publication and no work experience is a big hurdle to get admitted in these Ivy league uni but plz let me knw wht do u think my chances are. Also, plz tell me do i need to draft individual SOP for all these uni to give an impact and a personalised SOP or one common SOP is enough? Any help and valuable advise will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  4. hi all! registration for the subject test has begun. Register early so as to get test centres of ur choice. All the best
  5. hi mughdha, It seems we both are sailing in the same boat. However, I talked to my professors here and they said that it wont raise any doubts or questions if your other points are strong (like scores, GPA ,SOP etc.etc).so just lets keep are fingers crossed! hi. I dont know the exact fees for subject gre but it might be around Rs 7000-9000. Even i have this problem as i am looking for fellowships and for that i need to apply way in advance and cant just wait for my gre sub score to arrive. And i'll be taking my exams in nov and it takes around 4-5weeks for the scores to come! so i guess we are left with no other options but to take risk. I know stakes are too high but cant do much about it!
  6. hi! Yeah i've taken a break for a yr to prepare for competitive exams. I am not working anywhere, prep for Gre both general and subject takes away much of my time.Thts the rsn y i did not take up any job. so wht r u planning to pursue? In whcih field? hv u decided on the universities??
  7. hey mughda! i've completed my M.Sc in biochemistry in 2005 and at present preparing for both General n Subject Gre;will be taking the exams in aug n nov resp.About the Gre sub test, they'll put up the notice on the ets website. however, registration will start only in later july or early august. my perp for subject test is going fine. wht bout u? hv u started prep? wht r u planning to do??
  8. hey.... do not get disheartened! its not the end of life! its just an exam! dont make too great a deal out of it. i m really astonished that u hv scored high in powerprep (much more) than ur original score, anyways all said n done, try n analyse where u've made mistake and try n work on tht.
  9. yes, as far as i knw its true tht PhD in biochemistry require little maths knowledge.... mostly for the data interpretation of the research results.
  10. hi. all the best with the prep.do u really think tht the research experience(for 5mnths) will benefit me?i m however a lil worried as i dont wanna do my phd in topics related to cancer but just coz of this experience i hope i dont give out wrong impression. the books tht i refer for cell biology includes molecular cell biology (by Harvey lodish),genes (by Benjamin Lewin) and molecular cell biology of the cell(by bruce alberts).
  11. hi! I am frm ahmedabad and hv done my M.Sc in biochemistry. I too dont hv any research experience other than the dissertation tht i hv done in the gujarat cancer institute for 5 months.I am going to take my GRE general on 27th of this month. i am tooooooo nervous as my application to the universities will depend upon it.I hv started preparing for the gre subject but at present hv very little time for it. Yeah, the test is too comprehensive.Even i find it difficult at times as some topics seems to be too alien!anyways, when are u planning to take ur general gre? are u preparing for the same? I have more or less decided on the universities tht i'll apply to but however like i said it all depends on my score. And also i am looking for fellowships n all so i need to score really well in order to make my application stand out and kinda compensate for no research n job experience.
  12. hi whyme! welcome to the group. i m sure this thread will b of great help to the nov/dec 2006 test takers like me n u! so hv u decided on the list of uni tht u r interested in? u basically interested in us uni or uni in other countries as well? i'll be aplying to uni of different countries and not limiting myself to us uni only. Wht hv u done? do u hv research experience and papers published? hv u taken ur GRE (general) and TOEFL??
  13. hey Whyme!welcome to the group! where r u frm?wht hv u done? hv u started prep for the test?
