im from the uk and over here essex has very little kudos attached to the name, might want to scrub that one. generally the best universities outside of oxbridge are the big city ones- ie manchester bristol birmingham edinburgh and of course lse and ucl

hi i am finishing my final year in the uk undergrad degree and my marks have been erratic- we have a 3 year system here where your first year doesnt count towards your degree grades at all, your second only 25% and your third and final year 75%. you need 70 for a first class honours, sixty for a 2:1, 50 for a 2:2, after that youre just dumb. in my first year i got about 50%, i just partied, second year 64% and in my final year, where the majority of the weight is held i have averaged 90% so i am looking at a comfortable first class honours degree averaging about 80% miles over the first class threshold. will my apathy in the first two years count against me much? what would my chances be of getting into a us uni for a phd program be? funding not too much of a problem. all my courses in my final year bar my research project have been mathematics based, game theory, econometrics, calculus, statistics etc and i have clearly shown im competent at them. my GREs read 800q 750v and 6.0a. my uni is ranked about 10 within the uk. my letters of reference would be excellent- my best friends dad is dean at another uni and i have known him for 10 years and my tutor at uni thinks im doing great. would my proofile be suitable to apply to the top unis? if so which ones would you recommend?
