  1. Hi, My College recommends two pre-reqs for Real Analysis I (undergrad) - Discrete Math and Cal III. However, as I am short on time - I am thinking of skipping Discrete Math and doing Cal III and Real Analysis I simultaneously in the summer. Is this doable? MOre importantly, could one understand the content of Real Analysis after two semesters of Calc? (I would be taking Cal III simultaneously with Real Analysis) Thanks in advance.
  2. I hope not! Last thing we need is for economics ad-coms to start ignoring their own brains and start listening to the comments of people here. (no offense).
  3. Hi folks! I shall be applying to various Econ PhD programs and also a few Public Policy (PP) PhD programs. Can you guys please suggest 6-7 univs where I can cover the following kind of topics (these are some of the topics I am interested in): Economic effects of democratic participation Voter behavior Allocation of revenues amongst provinces Socio economic Costs and benefits of public sector projects (like hydroelectric dams) Whether gift giving by doctors raises health care costs? Crime's effect on businesses Effect of gun ownership on crime Demographic issues Demographic and economics determinants of street crime Determinants of Social Capital Looking forward to your feedback. Thanks Usman.
  4. Hi people, As I am reading Steven Levitt's book these days and would like to read research (from other economists) of similar nature - can you please give me the names of other economists who have done work similar to Steven Levitt? Usman.
  5. Hi people. please help me out in this regard if you can. My question is how many universities in the US offer the option / program for MS (Statistics) leading to Phd (econ)? I mean, how common is it? Is it the norm or an exception or what? Looking forward to any help.
  6. Actually I have been offered an MS leading to PhD scholarship. My concern is whether most universities have a Masters (Statistics) leading to Phd program in the United States?
  7. Hi peopleI was recently offered a scholarship for Masters degree. My original aim was to do Econ PhD, but I guess that Masters in Statistics shall also be useful for me as it will prepare me for the Economics PhD. (although I am already taking Linear Algebra, Multivar Calc, and Calc I ryt now and will be done with them by end-January 2007). And during the Statistics degree, I can also take courses like Real Analysis. The scholarship folks have also said that if I get admission into a PhD program during my Masters degree studies, then they will approve a scholarship for that as well. Now my question is, whether it is actually possible to get admission into a PhD program while you are nearing the end of your Masters. The timeline for my studies would be something like this: The Masters degree starts in Fall 2007 and will end by Fall 2009. I will have to apply to Econ Phd programs between Sept 2007-Dec 2007? My question is whether Econ PhD programs will consider someone who is applying for admission one year before actually getting the Masters degree. Can anyone kindly clarify this?

  9. Hi people, I am a business graduate and decided a little while back that I would like to do Phd in Economics. Since I was short on pure mathematics courses I am taking Calculus and Analytic Geometry, Multivariable Calculus, and Linear Algebra (through distance courses, I work full-time) right now. Havent taken Real Analysis because there's no distance or evening program that offers this course in Pakistan (where I live). Ok, so now I can either go directly for PhD Economics or can take a couple of years to study in MA Mathematical Statistics, and then go for PhD. Obviously doing more statistics b4 taking the plunge into PhD will help later on and make the PhD a little easier to handle, but are the above three math courses sufficient to get into a (decent) PhD program? My GRE scores are pretty ok btw - and I did MBA from one of the top two schools here. Personally I would like to go into the PhD directly and not wait two years (doing MA) before getting into PhD. On the other hand, doing MA in Mathematical Stats would let me get a 'feel' of the material in Phd, thus preparing me emotionally and tell me whether I am upto this PhD thing or not. What do you guys suggest? If you say MA Stats, then please tell me what courses to take in the two years program. Thanks Usman.
  10. Hi Since most of us here are thinking about doing PhD in Economics - I wanted to know about the lifestyle of individuals who take up teaching economics at University level after completion of Economics PhD - specifically my question is: Approximately how many hours do economics teachers work in an average work week? What are some of the major factors which influence the number of hours they work per week? Does the number of hours worked vary significantly by the type of industry an economist works in? I think this is a relevant and important question for most of us since completion of PhD in Economics doesnt only entail doing research and writing papers - a larger issue also exists about the kind of emotional and social life we'll have after we complete the Economics PhD and enter our respective fields. I have already searched the Bureau of Labor Statistics website (www.bls.gov) for information on the subject but could not find detailed information about the hours per week. Therefore I was hoping this forum could help me out here by drawing from their experiences of interacting with economics professors / colleagues in this field. Also, my other question is whether it is possible to study behavioral economics at PhD level? Thanks Usman.
  11. Hi I wanted to solicit the ideas of people in this forum for what they think should be the content / syllabus of the following courses: Multivariable Calculus Linear Algebra Real Analysis I am asking this because I have to take the above courses to strengthen my math in preparation for an Econ PhD, and I want to be sure that I courses I am taking cover the key topics. Thanks Usman
  12. Hi, So my story at the beginning of this thread started like this: My plan is to do MS in Statistics as preparation for an Econ Phd. I am an MBA, by the way. In GRE my Quantitative score is 600 (didnt complete the test by guessing randomly on the last 10 questions  yikes!), Verbal 680, and analytical 5.5 (no one cares about that :( ) My background is like this: MBA in finance. Also BBA in Finance from Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi, Pakistan. IBA was established with help of USAID in 1955, with technical support from Wharton. It is one of the top two business schools in Pakistan. I want to do teaching and research (Public Economics) or work for the government. Ok before I give you my grades, let me tell you something about the grading plan at IBA. Percent Marks Grade Grade points on a 4 point scale Grades below this level not mentioned 77-79% C+ 2.34 80-82% B- 2.67 83-86% B 3.00 87-89% B+ 3.34 90-92% A- 3.67 93%+ A 4.00 My grades are like this: Business Math I = B- Business Math II = A- Intro to Statistics = B Inferential Statistics = B+ Financial Econometrics = B Macroeconomics (undergrad)=B- Micro(undergrad) = B Development Econ(undergrad) = B- International Trade = A- The financial econometrics course wasn’t math intensive. It focused mainly on the interpretation and assumptions, limitations of the various econometric test. However, I did a project on the “Cointegration test of the Quantity Theory of Money in Pakistan” – which was more involved. The Business Math covered the basic calculus stuff like differentiation and integration. Also I have taken many Finance courses like Corporate Finance, Financial Derivatives, Portfolio Management, Treasury and funds management, International Finance etc, Investment banking etc. I decided to do MS in Statistics after reading Tony Hills (JHU) recent observations on the link: http://www.econphd.net/downloads/twcomments.pdf Perhaps I should do another undergrad in math (would that be two years or 1 year). I am also thinking about the public policy PhD that OneMoreEcon has suggested (since that requires a lesser emphasis on math). I am gonna go thru some articles in academic journals to see whether I find the content interesting or not. Right now I am off too browse thru the Journal of Political Economy. Thanks Usman.
  13. >Quote: >Yes, you can take any math classes you want to as long as you have all >the prerequisites. Yeah , its like I said - its basically just those courses. Well...would any of you guys know as to what are prerequisites for those three courses: Multivariable calculus, Linear Algebra, and Real Analysis? Usman
  14. Thanks tad! Well I pretty much suck at math...but I think I can try at least to rectify some weaknesses. That being said, I kind of like Statistics, more than my classmates at college at least. ok another question - would it be possible to enter into a Statistics program and also take those three math courses on the side (as optional or non-credit courses or something) Just so that I get a handle on the Math skills needed for an economics Ph.D? In response to the answer by PCG - I am working right now and dont think that I can join the local college part-time for these courses (as work just takes up too much time). And can you please explain as to what exactly is the difference between public policy schools and regular econ PhD programs? And also give some names of public policy schools / specialized programs so I can check them out on the net myself. Thanks for your input. Thanks guys I really appreciate any help. Usman.
  15. Hi I have done MBA and I would like to do PhD in Public Economics. Now my math background is weak (basically I need to do multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and real analysis). Now I am thinking which would be better preparation for the Econ PhD... MS in Statistics or MS in Maths? Any suggestions? Usman.
