  1. Harekrsna, I would highly recommend reading this: http://www.www.urch.com/forums/showthread.php?t=62389&referrerid=42960 as I obtained a lot of my prep ideas from that post. Barron's was indeed great for going over the basic concepts and Nova worked really well also. All I can really offer as advice is to practice, practice, practice. Like I said, this isn't quite the score I would have liked but the practice really did help, especially when it came to questions that normally would bog me down. After practicing with so many different examples you start to see different shortcuts and will, hopefully, feel ready for anything that comes your way... I really do hate tests like these and am never good at them, don't really see how a person's performance on the GRE would indicate their performance in grad schoo... But I guess they have to do something to weed people out :P For verbal, I really was not concerned with getting the highest possible score there. It would have been nice, but most of my studying was around the quant section as I wanted as high of a score there as possible. I had a big family wedding/reunion of sorts in the middle of studying which took nearly 3 weeks away from studying so I only really had time for quant. I did study vocab, but only about 400 or so words. I saw MANY words right off the Barron's hit list so def look at that.
  2. Just took the exam this morning and am happy to report the score! :tup: A very BIG "THANK YOU!!!" to everyone on this forum who helped me with questions and to anyone who took the time to give advice to those who needed it. I must say, this score is not QUITE what I would have wanted (780 or 790 Q would have been nice) but I am happy with it...especially after completely choking my first time around (I got a 1090, 590 Q, 500 V). I do not think I will be taking it again as I am hoping this score will be good enough for good Urban Planning programs. My advice: If you are not quite up on your game as some people are...read the sticky about getting a high quant score for non-math test takers and FOLLOW! I did as many practice exam questions as I could get my hands on and even then... Just a question...would it be worth it..given my score...to attempt it again for the 800? I am thinking not, but wanted to get opinions out there.
  3. Can anyone tell me if this explanation is a correct method for solving questions like this on the exam? It would be a great shortcut but I wanted to get some opinions.
  4. Kumara: sqrt(a+B) does not = sqrt(a) +sqrt(b) (it is not a property like sqrt(xy) = sqrt(x)sqrt(y)). That is why I think the equation was setup based on the answers since that was the format of the answers.... Any help?
  5. thanks for the clarification guys, i understand it now...great explanation! One question though, is the setup done to mimic the answers? Meaning was the equation set to = sqrt(a) + sqrt(b) because the answers were all basically in that form? or is there some other mathematical reasoning behind this?
  6. Could someone please explain the above explanation for me? Or some other method for solving this problem? I'm still a little confused as to what to do with a question like this. Thanks!
  7. For Question 1) I guess the easiest way would be to see that they greatest deviation between the first and last number occurs in the -2, 0, 2 set? Would that be a correct method to obtain largest SD? For Question 2) I am kind of lost, though the answer would be B....any suggestions?

    permutation

    Well I know there are only 123, 234, 345 = 3 possible outcomes where you would have 3 heads on consecutive tosses...but I'm having a dull moment figuring out the denominator to get the probability. wait, would the answer be 3/32? no this is wrong too, 3 with only 3 consecutive heads, 2 consecutive 4, 1 consecutive 5, 2 3+1 combo so... total of 8 outcomes where there woudl be at least 3 consecutive heads? still having trouble with this one...can anyone give a good explanation of how to get answer without counting things out?
  9. One thing to really keep in the front of your mind in problems like these is that you need to solve the problem using one variable...in this case: N + D = 70 where N = # nickles and D = # dimes.... This can easily be translated to N + (70-N) = 70 I know this is what you get if you solve using the equations protean listed...I just know that it helped me to just keep in mind this simple element.

    pls explain

    You can also numbers to solve: If we take the total number of attendents as 70 people we get the following two equations for this problem: M + F = 70 2/3F = 1/2M Then solve for M --> 4/3F = M Plug this into the first equation: 4/3F + F = 70 --> 7/3F = 70 --> F = 30 If F = 30 --> 30/70 = 3/7
  11. P is inside C and on line L...so that's 1 point in common 2nd point would be where L intersects C, my only issue is how do you know it only intersects at one spot on C? Can't it = 3?
  12. Is the answer to #2 21/4? I'm getting 360 english plus 60 (english and french) for 420 speaking english. 500-360 = 140 who speak french => 140-60(english and french) = 80 who speak only french. 420/80 = 21/4
  13. AHA! 19 repeated! That's what I was missing =/ GG nix, I tried solving that way, and thought I was doing soemthing wrong because I kept getting "11" Uhg, glad I'm giving myself more time for the 2nd round :crazy:
  14. The question doesn't indicate "common multiple" so I am a little confused.
  15. I should have rescheduled the exam, I knew I wasn't ready for it. I was nervous everytime I took a practice exam and would always take too long on questions. Need to badly set up a work plan for me so I can retake in Feb and do well. I know the material itself is not difficult and I'm not a math moron so I just feel broken right now. My advice: -do NOT take the exam unless you feel comfortable on your practice exams. -do NOT wait to do most of your "studying" for the last 3 weeks - 1 month unless these types of exams are a cake walk for you. I guess I got a little cocky about my abilities and it really came back to kick my @55 in the end. -learn how to think clearly to pick problems apart quickly. I got caught up in certain problems and before I knew it, I had more problems than minutes left and my mind just shut down on me. Ask me what I did and DON'T follow it =/
