What the heck is ORIGINAL MEANING anyway???
rays28 replied to sirlogic's topic in GMAT Sentence Correction
I believe - C is the best choice and this clarifies the meaning, but doesn't change the meaning. In A, it seems water itself is a problem, where the actual meaning is the 'problems associated with management of water and others resources...'. Water itself being one of the resources, you need to use '....other resources...'. That way, C is the best option. -
I opt for E. Usage of 'like' for examples is wrong and so we can eliminate B & C. I believe, the meaning is - The fact that 'Teratomas are unusual forms of cancer' lies in that .....tissues such as tooth and bone' i.e. the 'tissues' that are 'not normally found.......'. Hence you require 'tissues' after the comma (after bone), so C or E. C is already eliminated for usage of 'like', hence through POE, it is E.
-
I'll go for E. Not only from X but also from Y. That eliminates A & B. C. from the requests for highly paid professionals, who make higher profits for the agencies when placed and whose requests (Can't use 'who' and not it is not 'the requests of highly paid professionals', but 'the requests for highly paid professionals') D. from highly paid professionals, whose placement makes higher profits for the agencies and whose requests (it is not 'the requests of highly paid professionals', but 'the requests for highly paid professionals')

When do we require the auxilliary after coparatives?
rays28 replied to rays28's topic in GMAT Sentence Correction
I meant - which one between B and D? Also when to use the construction of B vs. that of D? -
In E, what does 'they' refer to, 'students' or 'these skills'? By the way, I agree with modusoperandi.

Inuits of the Bering Sea were in isolation from contact with Europeans longer than Aleuts or Inuits of the North Pacific and northern Alaska. (A) in isolation from contact with Europeans longer than (B) isolated from contact with Europeans longer than © in isolation from contact with Europeans longer than were (D) isolated from contact with Europeans longer than were (E) in isolation and without contacts with Europeans longer than I am not sure when to use 'A is taller/better than B' and when 'A is taller/better than B is'. Erin/Bob, can you please advise?

'What' can be broken into 'that' & 'which'. In this sentence, it should be '..pursue something .....possible - better control....', hence they are pursuing something that was 'better control'. If you have to use what then it should have been, '..pursue that .....possible - which is better control....'.
-
I feel only C is correct. It means, 'Beatrix Potter carefully coordinated her book illustrations with her narratives...', not that 'Beatrix Potter carefully coordinated something in her book illustrations with her narratives...'. Hope it helps.
-
My choice would be A. A - '...they decounce...saying ...supporting...', parallel. B - '...they decounce...they say ...but supporting...', noth parallel C - 'they decounce..., they say...', only comma can't join, a conjunction required. D & E - clearly wrong, the sentences separated by ; need to be independent sentences, can't start with 'while..'

How to use twice, three times, four times ?
rays28 replied to sillygirl's topic in GMAT Sentence Correction
Please check the correct answer is C http://thousandsc.blogspot.com/2006/04/qn-42.html -
I think, I would agree now. Initially I thought that it still remains undeveloped, but the meaning is that it remained undeveloped at the time of approval, hence past perfect is required.
-
I believe, it is because 'rather than' conveys preference not a replacement.
-
D also has the problem of singular(the penal system) to plural(penitentiaries).
-
1 is not correct, the manager is obstinate and surly not his attitude. It should have been - 1. Obstinate and surly, the manager prevented his staff from befriending him.

Manhattan SC...COMPARISONS PROBLEM SET
rays28 replied to kamal.chandwani's topic in GMAT Sentence Correction
I think the message ot tries to convey is that 'the contribution to the children's campaign has been the most from the tycoon, not from anybody else' and not that 'the tycoon contributes more to children's campaign than to anything else'. Hence, I would prefer D. -
Still not clear why it should be D. Ok, let's find why B is wrong.
-
OA is A. This option is better than others. But I am not convinced about the usage of past perfect, as it still remains undeveloped.

In metalwork one advantage of adhesive-bonding over spot-welding is that the contact, and hence the bonding, is effected continuously over a broad surface instead of a series of regularly spaced points with no bonding in between. (A) instead of (B) as opposed to © in contrast with (D) rather than at (E) as against being at Please give the reasons for selection.

D is wrong - think it this way 'it is more than 2000 years old and (it) took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete' is correct in C. In D, 'it is more than 2000 years old and (it) 700,000 artisans took more than 36 years to complete', isn't it awkward? -
'The act o failing...' violates the law. Hence, it has got to be between C & D. D's construction is incorrect. Failure to advertise what? The highest price obviously. Hence C.
