  2. The most common reasons for an employee's unwillingness to accept a transfer are that mortgage rates are high, housing in the new location costs more, and the difficulty of selling the old home. (A) that mortgage rates are high, housing in the new location costs more, and the difficulty of selling the old home. (B) that mortgage rates are high, housing in the new location costs more, and that it is difficult to sell the old home © high mortgage rates, the greater cost of housing in the new location, and that the old home is difficult to sell (D) high mortgage rates, the greater cost of housing in the new location, and it is difficult to sell the old home. (E) high mortgage rates, the greater cost of housing in the new location, and the difficulty of selling the old home Can someone please tell me how this empty IT is not ruining the parallelism.. I think choice E is the better choice...
  3. I wish I knew... Erin can you help us...
  4. Guys, I posted this question on the SC site but it wasn't getting much action so I brought it here. I guess until people actively participate on the new site, I will post my questions here. The answers are C and E. Let me know... 1.The Census Bureau reports that more than three-fifths of all married couples in the U.S now have two incomes, significantly more than earlier decades did. A) B)earlier decades C) in earlier decades D) earlier decades have E) that in earlier decade My question is shouldn’t the correct answer be “those of earlier generation”? Full sentence would be “significantly more than incomes of earlier generation” In comparison when do we use “that of or those of”(like choice E), the verb “do” (Choice A) or just “in earlier decades” (Choice C)like this problem. I think this is a great problem to address those three main issues in comparisons. 2.For several years, companies in the US have increased spending for research far faster than the inflation rate. A) B)exceeding by far the rate of inflation C) far faster than rising inflation D) far faster than the rising of the inflation rate E) at a rate far exceeding the rate of inflation. I chose C. Can you tell me where I went wrong?

A) B) of the Jerusalem being destroyed, which C) for Jerusalem being destoryed D) for Jerusalem to be destoryed E) for the destruction of Jerusalem, and it 3) The national college counseling Project charges that serious flaws in counseling and admission are largely responsible for the 60percent of students who enter a given college as freshmen and do not graduate from that institution. A) B) for the sixty percent of students entering a given college as freshmen who do not C)that 60% of the students entering a given college as freshmen do not D)for the failure of 60% of the college students entering a given college as freshmen not to E) for the failure of 60% of the students who enter a college as freshmen to

  7. Hello all, I usually wait for a few days to post the answers because I want people to share their ideas and discuss why they are wrong and right. I know people usually post the answers with their questions but I like to wait and see because I think people on this board can learn alot from other people's thinking process and approach. So when I don't put up the answers right aways please bear with me. Well the answers are 1)C 2)D 3)C
  8. Erin and rest of the readers, I was going to post these questions on the new site but didn't see much activity there so decided to post them here. As soon as all of us are completely plugged in I will be one of the biggest contributor to the new fourm. Ok well having said that let me post some more questions. 1. Contrary to earlier conjectures, it may be that increased atmospheric carbon dioxide as a result of burning fossil fuels would cool the globe by reducing the amount of solar energy absorbed by snow. a) increased atmospheric carbon dioxide as a result of burning b) increased atmospheric carbon dioxide resulting from the combustion of c)increasing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere resulting from the combustion of d) carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that increased from burning e)atmospheric carbon dioxide that increased from burning This question brings up another dreadful weakness in many of us. "Participle usage" I unfortuneately picked A; hence let me know what you picked and why. 2.Distinguished architecture requires the expenditure of large sums of money, even if is by no means certain that the expenditure of large sums of money produce distinguished architecture. a) b)even if it is by no means certain that the expenditure of large sums of money will produce c) even thouogh there is no certainty that the expenditure of money in large sums produce d) even though it is by no means certain that the expenditure of large sums of money produces e) though there is no certainty as to the expenditure of money in large sums producing This is a tough question. This question tests the floowing S-V agreement tense usage word choice (eventhough vs though vs even if it is) word choice (no means certain vs no certainty) I would appreciate it If you guys/gals can address the abovementioned issues when discussing this problem 3. Testbooks for the used book sales should be in good condition and should have no writing in them or be underlined. a) b) and should not have writing in them or not be underlined c) and contain no writing or underlining d) witohut containing writing nor be underlined e) without having any writing or no underlining in them
  9. Erin, Can you please address this question??? I have been dying to know...
  10. Hello Evenflow, Thanks for your explanations. However I have a question relating to the question #3. You said the trick is of understanding participle. Just see the contruction.. Your quote "An effort which began two years ago for upgrading the health care of children is starting to save lives ................. Begin : - Present. Began:- Past Begun :- participle. another exampple: Eat :- Present Ate: - Past Eaten: - Participle. The part which beagn can be reduced to a participle begun." My question Can you explain to me how "Begun"= which began. Are you telling me that participle can be expressed as "which + Past tense"? Furthermore does this rule apply to present participle "ing form" For example "eating"= which ate? Thanks in advance for your further explanation.
  11. Erin, Will you be transferring all the post from this site to your new site? I have been reading your past questions your students have posted and those questions has been helping me alot. If not let us know so that I can read all the past post before they disappear.
  12. Info: Three out of four hospital give out novex Conclusion: Choose Novex if you want the most effective painkiller. In CR questions you want to make sure that conclusion is drawn based upon Info. the assumption is that since Hospital gives it out to its cusotmers the most; hence most effective. You want to eliminate A,D and E cos the examples do not mention hospitals at all. I chose C cos this example si bascially saying that the hospital sgave out these pills not cos they are most effective but cos are cheapest...
  13. Erin, We need your help with these three postings because people seem to be all over the place with their reasonings and have not come up with the right answers and reasonings for the three examples above. I think #2 and#3 are superhard and I think there are some trick points we can't see. For HelloGmat, I read your explanation on question #2 and I quote "To me, "increasing difficulties" seems to indicate that the difficulties continue to grow. "increased difficulties" says that the difficulties increased. I think that either one of these could be applicable to the situation. However, "to have increased" is confusing for the following reason: - it is not clear whether increased is used as a verb ("have increased") or as a modifier to "difficulties" ("increased difficulties"). E.g. "They have increased difficulties" could mean either that they increased the difficulties (almost on purpose) or that the difficulties were increased. Am I making sense? As a result, I vote for E." I think your reasoning for picking present perfect is correct but I have some questions about your decision on choosing "increasing difficulty" over "increasing difficulty" You mentioned that the word can be confusing since it can be used both as a modifier or a verb but can't you make the same reasoning for "increasing difficulties" After all increasing can also be used as a verb or modifier. By the way the answer is B.
  14. Booster, As ar as your explanation to Q 1 is concerned I have to disagree with you in your reasoning. Although D is the right answer I can't agree with ur explanation for eliminationg choice E. You said and I quote "In choice E competition that is fierce domestically becomes a verb form. D correctly preserves the noun form" I think choice E still retains the noun form "as competition that is fierce domestically" but it is wordy. Competition is the noun and that is fierce domestically is the adjective clasue modifying competition. Furthermore can you explain to me what purpose "it is" is serving in choice D. Thanks..
