  1. A very similar alternative to WinEdt is TexMaker, which is freeware. It's very user-friendly. As for tutorials, I found ''The not so short introduction to LaTex'' particularly useful. Also, a nice place to get some ''hints'' is the M. Osborne's webpage. There, there is also a review of BaKoMa TeXWord which I have not tried (it's not freeware) but seems to be very good. I wonder if there is a freeware alternative...
  2. Well, I think the option of getting an apt on campus is only available for those who get the MacCracken (everybody is funded with this fellowship), and that was the only on campus housing option, at least when it comes to Econ program.
  3. Yes, they will! Unless you know someone from the same gender who will also live there (special cases, such as, girlfriend and boyfriend with MacCracken as well are usually allowed to live together). When I asked about other options I was told that this was the unique option: 2 bedroom apt (a bigger and a smaller one).
  4. Yes, there are indeed. Stokey & Lucas (advanced), Ljungqvist & Sargent and Blanchard & Fisher are all good books. Notice, however that none of them is similar to Romer's book in its contents.
  5. That's a very hard situation, but there are some points to consider. First, keep in mind that your case is sui generis. As you said, and probably you're right, you got a weak LOR for political reasons. I don't know much about politics at your department, but may be the case that your professors are committed to students from the next class. It seems to me that they place very well in PhD program; so I think there is some coordination there. You did well in classes and, for some reason weren't ranked well among your peers. How well would you be ranked among students from next class who will apply? Is there any student from a previous class that applied last year? How good was him as a student and how good was his performance in application? Try to disclosure such info before deciding to re-apply. I would re-apply!

  7. There are some data in Penn World table, but I'm not sure if there are those you're interested...
  8. Of course, it's better to support our choices by claiming that the university we've chosen is "truly" the best one we have available. I think that's the reason we get so happy when our preference ordering is socially supported. But, even if that's not the case, it's impossible to believe that some have taken a suboptimal choice anyway.
  9. I see you are trying to rationalize things... Anything goes! It's possible to rationalize the choice of NYU in many ways, even by claiming that it's easier to keep your wife busy there than in other places you have available. But OK, it's nice to see my future colleagues so happy indeed!
  10. It's been hard for them to get letters then. I haven't heard from them as well.
  11. It's probably a nice idea to get some feedback, especially about silly typos, before have the book published. After publication, I bet the book will not be available anymore. I think Sargent did the same with his book.

  18. It's a surprise to me such acceptance, as long as NYU admission is against the odds by now. It's very hard to choose between NYU and Minnesota, when it comes to macro...
  19. I've got an email, 2 hours ago, from Marge offering me admission.
