    Calculation question

Daily is correct, conventionally, drugs that have wide therapeutic range are given once every 1 or 2 half lives.
  2. Where are you at? Are you here in the states? an immigrant or what? It depends on the state you want to be at because different states have different requirements to be a technician. Pharmacy technician has more responsibility that Pharmacy assistant and it pays more. -
  3. Wish to pass: I'm not familiar with the TN work visa, however, I suggest for you to try to go to the hospital pharmacy and talk to the pharmacist in charge or director of pharmacy or talk to human resources for that matter. It's not necessarily a must for you or for anybody to be a CPhT before applying for a hospital pharmacy intern position. About finding a position if willing to drive and work further away, I guess, it's a matter of choice and availability but if your willing to do so, communicate that to the prospective employer it might be a plus. Goodluck!
  4. wishtopass: If you read my previous post, I have mentioned something why it's much harder to get an intern position in a hospital setting, for one, they very rarely do H1B, second, It's a plus it's not amust if you have any experience in a hospital setting, though this is only my own observation. Before taking the FPGEE I was already a CPhT working in ahospital in charge of IV, TPN and Chemo in a level II trauma hospital. To answer some of your questions: The Board will not help you find internship position whether for retail or hospital setting for that is not there job, nor will they give you or recommend any preceptor or a contact information. I have no experience with volunteer work, so I'm not the right person to give you insight on that, nor was I involved with H1B. If you don't have a proper document ang just holding a visitors visa, I suggest use your time to look for a suitable sponsor to convert your status to a legal working status. I heard, though it's only a hearsay, that there are some who accept volunteer work, whether or not the time spent volunteering counts towards your internship hours is a big big ?. Remember, before the board counts your internship hours you must possess an internship license and how to get an intern license..... so on and so forth, so if you think about it, there's really no shortcut in the process.
  5. Hi I can do it: No, I'm in the long haul for 1500 hours.
  6. Hi wmw: Since graduation, my interest and intention was always been to practice in a hospital setting, not that I have anything against community or retail setting, eversince then, that's where I was trained and having the opportunity to come to the US I planned to continue and follow that suit. After passing FPGEE, TOEFLiBT, getting my FPGEC and intern license, I set my eyes and mind doing just that, and here I am partly continuing what I intended to do. I like my work, in fact I like it a lot. I'm enjoying and learning a lot. Typical day start with monitoring MAR sheets for each patient, checking for drug-drug interactions, checking for new ordered medication or discontinued medication, checking laboratory works and communicate with physicians regarding any concerns. Usually 1 or 2 pharmacist is assigned in medical, surgical, pediatric, ICU, NICU etc.etc depending on the census and another in IV admixture,TPN,Chemo, another in unit dose and compounding, another in drug information and poison control and others in clinics for coumadin (INR) DM (HA1c) etc.etc.monitoring. Depending on my preceptors area of assigned duty, sometimes I was given a task of making IV, TPN, Chemo or checking the work of the technician making it, making sure the correct dose is properly incorporated, checking the order of incorporation, making sure drugs are properly diluted with the correct diluent for patient that is diabetic for instance. Doing calculation work or sometimes given a task to the drug information and poison control, providing information or answer to the doctors other providers and nurses regarding pharmacokinetics, drug stability, compatibility with other drugs or any other questions regarding medications and some about laboratory works, On other days I was ask to make rounds and to check if the pyxis in all nurses stations are timely replenished by technicians, Do unit dosing etc.etc. All in all my preceptor is training me or enhancing my experience in all aspects of medication and pharmacy operation and at the end of the training sometimes I was ask to make a report/presentation or even given a test, in a way preparing me for NAPLEX. We are 6 interns in the pharmacy with different preceptors and different style of training and I'm the only one who is a foreign graduate, and what's nice about it is, we do exchanged notes and review materials and exchanged experiences.
  7. I believed that in any institution particularly in the medical field whether your working in a hospital setting or retail setting, volunteer or hired employee has to abide to the privacy act because that is a law.And for the medication used in hopital pharmacy, I don't agree with what knok said,"If you work only in hospital, you may not expose to any medication in retail channel". For one, hospital pharmacy abide by the formulary set forth by the P&T committee, that is to make sure there is no repetition or duplication of medication that has the same pharmacological category but only different in name and manufacturer at the same time there is also excemption to the rule, if the pharmacist think that the medication that the physician is asking which is not presently included in the formulary is necessary and is unique in its action, then the pharmacist can recommend to include the drug in the formulary with necessary documentation, or authorized to have an emergency purchased. -
  8. Hi nono03 2003, In my experience, there is nothing really. I just walk up into the hospital pharmacy and asked to speak to the Pharmacist on duty and presented my case, a foreign graduate and just got my FPGEC certificate and just wondering if by any chance they have a position for a Pharmacist Intern, the Pharmacist asked me to come back the following day and bring with me my FPGEC certificate and other documents, he will make a note to the Director of Pharmacy for he is out on a meeting and will gladly see me the following day. To cut the story short I did not have a problem getting an intern position in a hospital and the Pharmacist that I talked to end up to be my preceptor. Overall I'm enjoying and learning a lot as an intern in this hospital. My preceptor have a very good and organized training set up for me. I have a month or 2 training for each section of the in-patient. First, I was assigned in the unit-dose area, then IV, TPN, Chemo, satellite, drug information, rounds with the clinical staff, even a P&T Committee meeting just to get an idea. I was even send to participate in the midyear clinical meeting of ASHP, this is of course all expenses paid by them and I am not a volunteer. I am a normally hired employee with all the benefits offered by the hospital institution I worked for.
  9. Yes you can. I'm on my last round or a couple of months away of finishing my internship in a tertiary hospital and it's for a fee. I'm getting half of my preceptor's salary. One thing about the hospital is that they don't or seldom deal with H1B with regards to pharmacy internship unlike retail companies.
  10. Thanks! Exactly a month...Your score is not bad at all, in fact it's excellent, unless you also need 26 for the speaking part.
  11. I got my results and here's the breakdown: Reading: 28 :D Listening: 30 [bounce][banana] Writing : 30 [bounce][banana] Speaking: 29 [w00t] Thanks to the One above!
  12. Hi kim and sand, There's really know telling how they score the test but you need a passing core of 75. The exam consist of 4 parts. Part 1 Biomedical Sciences Part 2 Pharmaceutical Sciences Part 3 Social/Behavioral/Administrative/Pharmacy Sciences and Part 4 Clinical Sciences Check the blueprint on the nabp website and it will give you the detailed information NABP National Association of Boards of Pharmacy
  13. I have taken the plunge too and what can I say: Reading- tedious, hard and tough but was able to pull though, my suggestion, stick to the time frame Listening and Writing- it's easy for me, I feel good afterwards Speaking- you have to really concentrate on this one, focused on yourself and only yourself, I just pretend having conversation with my friends to relax and calm me down All in all it's a test of stress and time management on my part. Do not mind the test environment, or the people around you. I'm anxiously waiting for my result, but this is the only test I have taken, that I feel happy after finishing the test. Goodluck to all
