  1. This will help you interpret the Harvard ranking! From our beloved John Campbell, Dear students, staff, and faculty of the economics department: The National Research Council has today released its long-awaited Assessment of Research Doctoral Programs. The assessment combines measurable characteristics of departments and PhD programs with faculty ratings, which are used to determine the relative weights on the measurable characteristics. The assessment reports two alternative rankings, each in the form of a 90% confidence interval that represents uncertainty about the relative importance of different characteristics. The confidence interval for our PhD program covers the range from #1 to #1 in both rankings. Rival PhD programs have wider confidence intervals starting at #2. In other words, the assessment finds that instead of a group of “top five” PhD programs, there is a top PhD program and a group of “almost top” PhD programs. Assessment of Research-Doctorate Programs
  2. Another reason to pick Harvard over MIT:)
  3. After getting in Harvard with money and in a decent number of top 15 schools, just got rejected by UC Santa Cruz. A proof of how random this process is!

  6. Hi wednesday, I just got my package today and it's more generous then that it's close to 30K for 12 months for the first 2 years without any teaching or RA obligations. Drops to about 26K in years 3 and 4 with TA obligations and it's again 26K in year 5 with no obligations again. Tuition and health expenses are also paid in full. That's what I call a sweet deal!! I think that probably we should thank Yale for this!
  7. Did you just get the email? I thought they were done
  8. When is everyone planning on getting to Boston for the flyout? They suggested going on the 30th March but what about coming back. Are all the events going to be over by around 5 on the 1st of April?

  12. econphilomath: that's correct
  13. ok the email is coming from the Graduate office and is signed by Enrico Moretti Graduate Committee Chair. However since they made this mistake with the funding in my case the person who sent the correction to me was a Graduate Advisor (a student). So the "Grad Office" is this student.
  14. it is because people assume that everyone in econ is male. Why don't use she instead??
  15. not alphabetical. I doubt it. I am S
  16. ok please guys use he/she when referring to people..It's annoying

  18. btw a student is sending the emails not a faculty...maybe that's why even the rejects are personalized
  19. nevermind "Financial aid letters will be mailed on March 5."
  20. so there was another email today but no word on the funding? What does "full funding" mean exactly?
