  1. Your're making a good point here. So slippage is simply a process of sliding. I think that's the best connection expressed behind those words
  2. To be more correct, those are universities you will apply later on. I-20 has nothing to do with TOEFL registration. If I'm not mistaken, I-20 is for visa This means that if the univeristies that you selected are on the list you should not enter them yourself. Just select them from the list. If they are not you have to know their ids and other information to mark them as your recipients.
  3. No, you will have sort of "heading". It's the topic that you will have to write about. In integrated writing you don't need any heading either.
  4. Hello, Mira. So, you have stepped onto a thorny path of TOEFL preparation. ;) Keep on! Kaplan is a controversial book. Some praise it, some don't. As far as I know, the material in it is harder than in any other book I used (Longman, Delta, Officail guide etc). In fact it is even harder than a real test, however reading sections are probably the same in terms of complexity CD with complete tests is quite good. I used it in my preparation. What section to study first? Well, it depends on your weaknesses. But you should definitely pay attention to the reading section, because it is very hard. In my case, I felt weak in writing. So I practiced writing like crazy. I wrote about 100 essays out of official list until I got confident in it. If you have the same problem you should get model essays and practice, practice, practice. Practicing speaking is a lot harder, especially if you live in non-English speaking country, which is my case. So, what I did was talking to the computer, recording my voice, learning about the structure. Listening is not that big a deal, but you gotta know how to make notes and make them fast. So practice is the key again. You can check out this site http://www.free-english.com There is also another one which I forgot, I'll tell you tomorrow. I've passed iBT recently. Check the thread http://www.www.urch.com/forums/just-finished-my-toefl/73826-test-17th-august.html So if you have a specific question I will be glad to help. Good luck!
  5. Score Recipient is the institution that you want to receive your TOEFL score. It is normally a university.
  6. Ok, now my score: Reading: 29 Listening: 29 Writing : 28 Speaking: 23 Well, I guess not bad for the first time. akres, congrats! Nice job! How much did you practice? NONOSH, why are you so upset? You have a good score. Or do you need a mysterious pharmacy's 26 in speaking? priyankam, reading is sure tough. First, you should be cool, not afraid to face hard-core academic texts. Second (this what works for me, others may disagree), don't read the passage before answering questions, begin answering them immediately. Third ( I didn't do it but should have), answer easy question (vocab questions, inserting sentences) first and then go for the harder ones. Good luck to you all!
  7. That is sure a confusing one ;) Both MARTIAL and MILITARY are synonyms so the bridge is clear. However, there are two choices that might fit: © and (D). Well, why not ©? Here is why, I guess. Cosmic is more inclusive, it's an adjective relating to cosmos (or space). Planetary, on the other hand, can be cosmic in a narrow sense. Normally, planetary relates to planets in space but there are other things out there as well.
  8. I think it's not clear. Slippage has little to do with price. Slippage is a decline from a standard level of performance or achievement. I think , in this case it means a decline in production. Purchase increases production and decreases slippage.
  9. Guys, guys, how about this one? Orient can also mean "rise" as in "a sun rise" (it is also a synonym for The East). So, the antonym should be decline, shouldn't it?
  10. No way. It is hard to imagine resting as a characteristic of pickers. It is totally different. Foragers are those who seek food for animals. When animals are grazing they eat grass right from the pasture so foragers can ... rest ;) That's why it D, I think
  11. Well, it has happened. I've taken the test yesterday. The first attempt. I've joined the long list of test-takers now. No feelings of relief, still up-tight. Anxious about my score. Ok, a little details Regarding the test Reading part is REALLY hard. It is way harder than that in Longman or Delta. I think the complexity of reading passages of a real test is close to those on Kaplan CD. A lot of inference and paraphrasing questions. They killed me. Listening is easy Speaking is not a big deal but you have to be focused. I've managed to make a few mistakes, though :yuck:. What can I tell you... practice is the key Writing went smoothly for me. Regarding the test center I took the test in Saratov, Russia. For those of you Russian guys out there considering taking iBT there I can say that is a good place. Service is good, air conditioning, quiet. There were only two of us (not counting proctors). We were sitting in the distance not disturbing each other very much. Regarding the software At one point of the test after my 10-minute break had elapsed the program just stopped dead. The proctors were kind of puzzled. So was I. Even more, I was sad at the prospect to retake the test, which means additional expenses and time. Then they just reboot the computer and I began doing my test from the point where I stopped. It was strange... I need a minimum score of 80 for a graduate school in physics. I try not to make any guesses in regard to the outcome. I don't plan to retake the test unless it is lower than 80 and hope for the best. The GRE is next. That's it folks. Good luck to you all!
  12. Off course, room as a room in a house is out of the question. Room as a sufficient space. Hmm... interesting. I didn't know that. My dictionary doesn't specify that. It just lists room, space and area as synonyms. Now it's clear... almost :hmm: Wasleys, thank you very much
  13. Here is the sentence The plants that have the highest probabilities of moving into the emptied space are those that are in the closest proximity... Question. The word space could be replaced by (a) sky (b) area © air (d) room The correct answer according the Longman CD is (b). Now, can anybody tell me why in world it cannot be (d)
  14. Ok, nen25, here it goes. First thing you should do is to run your essays through some kind of spelling checker to correct obvious mistakes You have clear abilities to think critically and reasonably. That's a good start. I believe, the first rule in writing is to have something to say. However, you should pay more attention to the grammar. There are several mistakes in your essay that can significantly lower your score. And don't forget about spelling too. Keep on and good luck! :)
  15. Hey Hobicat, I have a question for you. What's the practical use of your post? Instead of telling everybody about grading essays for money you'd better have said something about nen25's essay. Or you don't do that for free? Too bad. You are in the wrong place, 'cause I believe this forum's idea is 'people united common goal helping each other'. Go some place else to make money. Besides, you don't have to trust someone's judgment (use you own instead). But others here can give you a feedback, ideas, inspiration, support, encouragement and other things that money cannot buy. P.S. I would hate to have your attitude :(
  16. I'm also take iBT on 17th. Worried about speaking like you are, but think everything will be just fine. So my advice to you would be... breathe :) Good luck!
  17. Hi to all test-magicians! Please have a look at this TOPIC: You have been told that dormitory rooms at your university must be shared by two students. Would you rather have the university assign a student to share a room with you, or would you rather choose your own roommate? Use specific reasons and details to explain your answer. Well, the procedure of having the university choose you a roommate is unfamiliar to me. I did not have such a practice at my university. So I tried to come with some thoughts in favor of the university service. 1. The university can save you a lot of troubles taking care of finding you a roommate. 2. It can do it more professionally. What else? Did anybody have an experience like that? Please advise
  18. Hi PTS, I wouldn't worry about that. The speaking part is called the speaking part because it tests your speaking abilities. In other words, you are expected to use formal language there (well not very formal). I guess 'though' is ok. BTW, my exam is on August 17. I'm scared very much but trying to catch up. Where do you take your exam?
  19. Allow me to go deep down into your essay, into the very soul, if you will. Here it goes... Now, you support reasons are: 1. Sharing knowledge and expertise 2. Support from group members 3. Finding the best solution You've come up with pretty good thoughts, but the first and the last are related more, so what I would do is to combine them to go alongside and then put 'support reason' as the last one. And yes, I agree zymeth02, you should have developed your conclusion more. Just briefly go over your thoughts again there.
  20. I have to disagree with you, zymeth02, about using 'seem' word. It sure makes you sound unconfident. So what? It can be the sign of thinking. There are issues in the world that can be arguable and you cannot be sure about everything, but you CAN ponder upon them. I believe that's what test raters expect. Thinking about an issue allows you to develop a pretty good paragraph. I don't see any problems with that. That's what I think...
  21. Hi, app Here is my suggestions 1. Longman Preparation Course for the TOEFL® Test - Next Generation iBT 2. Delta's Key to the Next Generation TOEFL® Test **************** 3. The Official Guide To The New TOEFL® Test 4. Kaplan GRE Exam Comprehensive Program 2007 Edition Ok. The first two books are the best. As far as I'm concerned Longman is a little better. It is closer of all to the actual test with a lot of practice tests. Some people prefer Delta, I don't know. There are equally good. IMPORTANT THING. You have to buy Audio CD separately in order to use Listening, Writing and Speaking section of the book. They DO NOT go with the book. Official Guide is Ok, but not many practice test. Now, the fourth book has been receiving a lot of criticism. This is, in my point of view, because the book's material is a lot harder. Texts are longer. Thus, people feel frustrated when they use this book. But getting used to harder material can do you good => you will fell freer on the actual exam. Good luck!

    Minimum words

Well, what I heard actually 300 words is a minimum
  23. Any book that includes essays for TOEFL topics which you can use as models. Barrons How To Prepare For The TOEFL Essay will do. Truth to be told, what is REALLY important is pratice, not a book.
  24. Yeah, examples are important, but I tend NOT to be too personal in my essays. Maybe it is not a good idea... :hmm: Well, this idea is not actually a strong support of my thesis. In plain words it would be this: 'Learn from appearance as mush as you can, but never judge by it'. What do mean? Any word processor can do the job of counting words for you. My essay has 304 (three hundred and four) words. Barely made it, since the minimal is 300 ;) Thanks for your comments! See ya!
  25. Hi, friend! Here is what I've got to say. This essay has a good structure, vocabulary and grammar variety. However, it seems to me you used the phrase 'boys and girls' too much. You can use, 'male and female students', 'children of different genders' and so forth. Good luck!
