  1. Oops....missed out on visa forum. Its already there Anyway, good luck!
  2. Hi guys, Have anyone of u received any info. from Stony Brook? i.e. abt. I-20 etc. P.S. Any forum for visa experiences too in TM?? Do let me know....
  3. Hi.. Well, thanks again....I asked that question as many said, the more I-20's u have, the better chances of getting visa. Anyway, I'm done with SB.....now just relaxing while I receive my I-20 and prepare required docs. later on. ;) Good luck:D
  4. Hey thanks for the encouragement! Well unlike other students, I got no choice but go for SB ;) But I have a doubt. would I face any problem at visa?? i.e. I applied to 9 univs. and got admit from only one (please don't laugh) I heard that the more I-20's u've, the better the chances for visa. Wat should I reply to VO if he asks, "How many I-20's u have?" :shy: Thanks!
  5. Hello all, Well, my admission process is over. More than disappointment it was tricky and funny for me. I don't know how many of you have failed to get admits for all the univs. applied, but my case was a bit closer to that. I'm a BME undergraduate applied for MS/PhD graduate study in BME in 9 universitites. My GRE 640/740/4.5: V/Q/AWA, TOEFL-260/300. Acads: 72%, not much of research experience but some Teaching experience. As soon as I applied to the univs., I got my first admit very soon, i.e. just 3 weeks after applying in SUNY Stony Brook, MS BME. I never knew that one will turn out to be the first and the last admit I would ever have. I got rejects from remaining 8 univs. Those are UPenn, Rutgers, UMass, U. Cinn., UAB, CWRU, Vanderbilt and Gatech. Agreed that most of them are top slot schools, but I applied as per the research and replies from the professors from those schools. I never bothered about rankings until I applied. I didn't have much help from friends as they are not from my field and I have no seniors to suggest. Anyway, I'm planning to go for Stony Brook. But without aid. The first yr. expenses comes to around $20k....current students suggest me to carry first sem. expenses. They also say RA is hard to come by. But good chances for off campus jobs. When I asked about the specific jobs, they replied that the jobs ranges from cleaning dishes to sweeping floors :yuck:. Well, I'm not sure if I could do that...so I am having second thoughts of taking decisions. Usually students planning to go do have choice to choose univs., having multiple admits. But I've no choice...I'm yet to decide to go for it, but I would like your opinions on whether I should go for it or stay back. Many say Stony Brook has good reputation etc.. Also, I would like to thank all the TM's who gave their comments during admissions! Regards!
  6. Thanks for the replies, I am going for masters in BME. Though I have made up my mind for SUNY SB, a littler apprehension remains regarding choosing along with vanderbilt & CWRU. But there's no aid in all of these. So I would like to know which one would be of better choice. I could c CWRU is ranked 5th in BME rankings and vanderbilt is a nice place, as along with SUNY being an excellent one. Also, would there be any problem for visa stamping for any one of these univs. 'coz there's no aid!! Please let me know! Regards!
  7. Ok...... Another comparision now.....its between SUNY SB vs CWRU vs Vanderbilt for Biomedical.......anybody please??!!
  8. Many thanks for the inputs friends! My special thanks to Erin! Well that was exactly what I was expecting...an example. I should say, that is what I would like to tell those proffs. Yea, I was in touch with proffs....but obviously they disappeared when I got rejects ;) If u see my case, I applied to 9 schools. Got a first admit and rest all.....all until now are rejects!!......just now, got a bump from Gatech. Still 2 are remaining....so making sure if I could remind them something! Well friends.....I'm trying to be persistent.... Thanks Erin & friends! Regards!
  9. Dear friends, We all heard a lot about contacting professors, laboratories, departments etc. You all must have done it and I did the same. From a univ. I got a reply from a professor saying that he'll look into my file while making decisions. This was over a month ago. My friends say that I should remind him again. But I'm thinking how should I do that. Should I send the same mail of my research interests etc. again or should I give him a reminding mail. I personally don't think the latter is ethical. I'm having a problem with a school that I applied, where the proffs. with whom I would like to work with are not taking any new students it seems. But in my SoP, I did mention the research group I would like to work. Now that means they won't consider my application?? Whom should I contact further then? Just now I called up Vanderbilt university and said the decisions will be made by next week. What is the best thing I could do in this period? Should I contact the grad. director?? Or just wait for the decisions to come by.... For another univ. where I got an admit without aid, the replies of the professors are non-commital. My question is, apart from proff-letting what are the other things we can ask for?? Any examples are welcome! Regards!
  10. Hello TM's, I would like to know, for Biomedical engineering program which univ. is good. SUNY Stony Brook or is it University of Alabama, Birmingham. i.e. in terms of research, reputation, rankings, placements, aid etc. Kindly do put in your comments on this! Regards!
  11. Hello all, Last month I received a letter from a university just after I applied online, saying to submit all the required application materials to the univ. (which I did by then). The whole letter was where to send the materilas etc. In one sentence its written, "If you plan to apply for financial assistance, please contact the director of the graduate program to which you have applied." Does it mean that I should contact the director through mail/phone just after I send the packet? Or is it only after an admit? If I have to call him up, how should I ask him about considering me for financial aid?? I did mail him couple of times, but no response. It seems the decisions of admit will take some time. Should I contact him at this moment?? Please comment... Regards!
  12. Hello, Congrats for the admit!! Hope your hardwork paid off well Good luck for you in the future! ---Well Wisher :D
  13. Many thanks for your wishes! Vanillagate, thanks & congrats for your admission into NYU. I'm planning to learn French before I leave. So u doing PhD in French! would be great fun All the best!
  14. Hello all, I got a mail from SUNY Stony Brook saying that I am accepted into MS program in Biomed. This is the first admit since I have applied. I'm glad that I got an admit at Stony Brook. But there's no mention of fin. aid as of now. I'm waiting for the official letter from the univ. Many thanks to all of you for your support. I am yet to listen from CWRU, Gatech, Vanderbilt, Rutgers. I'll be glad to know the aid scene in SUNY SB and also the univ. as a whole for graduate study & research. :) Regards!:D
  15. Wow thats good for evryone, Vera, could u please elaborate about your interview and the questions they posed? Thanks
  16. Ha ha! Thats what I was wondering when u said, "what university is tht ??" (my univ. so funny??!!) Well it was for Rutgers University..... Thanks!
  17. Thanks for the inputs.... I've just mailed them & awaiting their reply. well..I'm from India....Jawaharlal Nehru University is a famous one in New Delhi. MY university..i.e. Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University is a new one (can't say a mediocre, but just 8 years old)...My university offers Bachelor's in Technology & arts. JNU, Delhi offers degrees for arts+humanities....but its well known too. While filling, I opted for JNU, instead of JNTU in the application... Hence the concern.....
  18. Hello all, One problem. I have done with all my applications in early Jan. For one of the university, I was reviewing the application online that I have sent long time back. There, I found out I missed out something on the university name. I come from "Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University". In the list of universities provided in the application form, I opted for "Jawaharlal Nehru University", instead of the former one, accidentally. That is, the option of selecting "Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University" was not there and the word, "Technological" is missing now. I just came to know about it now. Is it wise t inform the admissions committee abt. this?? Will it really hurt my chances?? I am of the opinion that the adcommittee may get vexed up & reject my application if I inform now, after a very long time. Maybe by now its under review process and may have undergone this error. Your comments on this ASAP. Regards!
  19. Hey, I'm also expecting a phone interview from couple of universitites. Just want to know what is that they would be asking and lasts for how long. Miao9, I guess some research on the university is worth knowing + atmosphere. I guess I'm in the same lines as you. Let's see!
  20. Hello all, I didn't understand a thing. Apart from application materials to be sent, When I claim that I have a research paper, published paper, international one etc. as my +ve points, do we need to send all these with the application packet?? Or just mentioning in the resume or SoP will do?? What about the credibility factor of the applicant who is applying?? Any comments??
  21. Hey thats a good thing if we can send additional documents after the deadline. But maybe it depends upon the university. I mailed the graduate office and awaiting a reply from them. By that time it'll be Jan 2, which is the deadline of the university. Well, let me see.....
  22. First, wish you all a very happy new year 2004! Well, now I got a fresh one!! I just now called up one of my recommender. He can send his reco. online. For this reason, I didn't send the hard copy along with the application packet. It seems while sending the online reco., the university people requested him to send the hardcopy. Now where should I send that?? The deadline is Jan 2. Maybe I'll be loosing 1 reco.......this recommender is my professor whose reco. may be a strong one. I did persuade him to cross check again for sending the reco. It seems that the university has asked the personal details of the recommender and requested him to submit a hardcopy of the reco. which he didn't understand! What to do??
  23. Yes, even I heard that only the credit card number and expiry date will suffice. But I never heard of billing address, city, state, zipcode, country etc. to be entered. As I was using my friend's credit card, I didn't know his address. So I entered the address given at the back of credit card, thinking that to be the correct "Billing address"....(too smart!) I've already mailed the admissions office & waiting for their reply. Hence the concern
  24. Hello Erin and TM's, I don't know where to post this one appropriately, but here it is. I applied to a university online using one of my friend's credit card. Now, there was no problem with the card number etc. But the site asked the billing address, city, state, country etc. Not knowing what to enter, I committed a mistake by entering the address of the credit card, instead of my friend's address. When I mentioned this to my friend, he said my application is sure to get rejected. The deadline is by the end of this month. So, is there anything that I could do to set this thing right?? Or the damage is already being done?? For another university too, whose deadline was on Dec 1, I did the same. But the univ. site shows that the application fee is received. So please suggest as soon as possible! Regards! Sri Harsha
  25. Position (Proff. etc) with Department(his Dept.) Its my guess
