  1. Well, what you must realise is the actual strength of your writings. For the essay where you must summarise, make sure you emphasize the solid main points made. For the other essay, make sure your points are clear and structured. Once you can show that you can make strong decisive statements(regardless of you personal stance), you'd have gained points. Good luck with you ventures!
  2. Hi there. I have a question that is a bit confusing. Im doing my SAT 1 on december the first but i noted that i only get the reults around the 20th. Thing is, most of the colleges i want to apply to require an official score report and their application deadlines are the first of January. My question then is, how long will it take for me to have a score report sent to the colleges of my choice if i place my request to have them sent a day or two after i get the results? Will i be able to make the deadline assuming i wont be using rush reporting? Many thanks.

  4. Well my personal advice is that you read the passage first. Reason for this is that when you read the questions they wont make any sense and recalling them whilst you read the passage will be next to impossible. This then means that the minute or two you spent reading the questions would have proven to be waste of time. Believe me when i say that timing is everything. What i suggest is that you practice reading random articles about topics you barely know anything about so that you can gain a kind of speed and confidence when you read a passage in the final exam. Hope this is useful!
  5. " Complete the summary by selecting the Three answer choices from six choices . This Question worth 2 points " Well, you'll get 2 points for 3 correct answers, 1 for 2 correct answers and 0 for either 1 or 2 correct answers. hope that helps
  6. Hi there. Well, i did my toefl and got 113 which i think is a strong score. But im struggling to grasp the SAT:rolleyes: . Ive done my SAT I and got a total score of 1790 and yet i need a score that is 2000. Considering that I was capable of getting 113 in the toefl(R28 L28 S27 W30):D one would assume that i would be capable of handling the SAT. Im very capable when it comes to math and evidently im not half bad in english. Can someone give me some advice OR MORE PREFERABLY BOOKS I CAN BUY on how to get my desired score in the SAT(I prefer to post this here than in the SAT forum because I feel I will find more people to relate to here). I plan to do the SAT II exam in October(Math Physics and Chemistry) and i have an air of confidence because Im well into my preparation. But still the element of SAT I remains and I cant figure out how to tackle this. Can someone give me some advice or tips to follow, a site that could guide me to a higher score OR MORE PREFERABLY BOOKS I CAN BUY ? Id really appreciate it...

  9. Well, i personally thought my speaking section went a bit sour but as things turned out, i did well. As i stressed before you have to be focussed specifically in two aspects. Firstly it is very important to hear the question. Missing the question is criminal. On some occasions you may find that the question is printed on the screen. If youre quick at reading, I advice that you quickly read the question and start brainstorming ideas even though the preparation time hasnt started. The advantage of this is blatant. More time, better preparation, better answer. Also practice jotting down your thoughts when practising. This skill can help you give a good answer. if youre a disorganised worker, this can hurt you. Organise your thoughts in short, simple points. The second element of my 'theory of focus' is that is that you avoid being distracted. Regardless of the stage on the test the person sitting next to you is on, you have to be focussed on yourself. If you get distracted, youll find that when it is time to speak, you'll be left blank and not saying anything which can damage your score. Finally, even though that this is easier said than done, be calm and confident in your own ability. A confident person will speak with a very consistent flow and will not have any mental blanks. If you speak english on a day-to-day basis and are fully aquainted with the language, then dont doubt your own ability to get a high grade. Thats was my confident(though arrogant) mentality but it helped because an answer that lacks 'vigour' doesnt impress the grader. Hope this helps....
  10. Well i personally used the 'Official guide to the new toefl ibt with cd rom'. It is written by McGraw hill and sold on the ets website. What i suggest though is that you impose a high level of self-discipline when using it. do not exceed the time when practising. in the listening section, the scripts are printed in the book. By all means avoid using them because in the final exam, they wont be there. On the cd rom, there are some audio tracks. Avoid by all means listening to them more than once because in the final exam you cannot. The book will help for those who remain disciplined.
  11. Hi there. I did my toefl ibt on the 9th of June. Suprisingly i got 113(28 in Reading and Listening, 27 in Speaking and 30 in writing). I realised that the main reason why people fail the toefl or get scores their dissatisfied with is because of their technique and not their ability or lack of it. So here it goes Reading- If your toefl is made up of 3 sections youre given 69mins worth of time. If it has 4 sections of reading you get 80mins and so on. Simple math proves that you basically have 20 mins per section. Some advice, be disciplined and stick to that time. DO NOT EXCEED IT. Practice with texts of similar length that talk about unfamiliar topics. This really helps. my suggestion is that you budget 5 mins for reading(NOTE: make sure you understand the 'approach', understand the gist of it and can identify the key points) and spend the remaining time on questions. YOU MUST BE FAST but CONSISTENT AT ALL TIMES. I personally suggest the McGraw-Hill book that is produced by ETS and sold on their site. It helped me. Listening- When i did my test, i was in a relatively quite place compared to some of the stories i've heard. Trick is to be focussed on yourself and yourself only. Whtatever it takes for you to concentrate on your own work, DO IT, because the last thing you want is to lose marks not because you didnt understand the task but because the guy next to you distracxted you. For example, when i did my test i started it slightly ahed of the guy next to me. Occasionaly i would glance to my left only to notice that he is filling in different answers to mine. It would slightly worry me but i remained focussed on myslef and myslef only. It should be the state of mind you approach the listening section with. Practice note taking, it can really help. Speaking- This is the tricky one. but again bring in the concept of focus and self belief. If when you speak into the microphone, you speak with confidence, it helps you potray your answer in a better manner. Dont worry about anyone else and/or their progress. Whatever it takes for you to focus on yourself, DO IT. Realise, when you panic, you stress your mind which in turn closes your window of creative thinking. Its true. Be confident. Sometimes confidence comes with practice. The more you practice the less fear and doubt you have in yourself. Writing- for the two tasks, the most improtant element is that you clearly portray the message you want to send out. For example, on the integrated task, make sure you capture the main point and you clearly state them in your essay. Efective contrasting of points will get you a higher score. All in all, focus on yours truly(yourself!). Dont get carried away with others or else you will get a score that will dissapoint you. Hope this helps and good luck!
