I was the one who posted on Gradcafe about Davis rejection. Got the check status email yesterday. Went ahead and checked my status in "Track status", and there the rejection was mentioned.

Congrats AREStudentHopeful. And thank you for the encouragement. I just did a search on gradcafe for past years, and it seems like Davis ARE gives rejection through status, and acceptances through emails. That's why quite apprehensive...

Also, btw, you should try and check with the UCSB econ department, the placements of 2007, 2008, and maybe even this year. This will also give you a better picture of their placements. In terms of academic placements, 2005 was a pretty decent year for UCSB, while 2006 was not good at all. So a few more years of placements can give you a decent picture. I am a bit surprised that they do not have placements listed after 2006. Some have already listed the 2009 ones.

Take a poll here, just like rvalchev did, when choosing a university. Honestly I don't know much about the Rand program. While UCSB is a good school, but placements not as impressive. Also, you might be interested in the average placements of a univeristy (i.e. the placements of the middle 50 percentile students) rather than the top or very bottom ones. Also for RAND, is it possible to get research experience under economists there, and then apply after a couple of years to the top programs? I know someone who did something similar with the Brookings Institute, and enrolled into Harvard last year.

Usually U washington manage something for the students, but given the budget cuts (which will be finalized in May I believe), I think they cannot be certain like the years before about this. There is a possibility that things may change a bit because of this crisis.

They are both very comparable/similar ranked departments. I would vote for Florida + you get the excellent weather and location there. Rice has a nice department, but the department does not look as dynamic if you look at their present research.

You may also consider a finance phd. I think UVA requires an MBA for their finance phd program, which may mean that you can get the phd in a shorter time. And C'ville is also an extremely nice place to live.

This is extremely good to know. I have also heard this before, but again few universities do ask for it. It will be really interesting to find out if too many students were asked to send the updated version of transcript, especially if they are taking important courses in the fall. Or also the counter example: Taking very important courses, and still not asked for it.

It really will be a very interesting forum, if these things happen. All these people will become professors in front of us. Maybe it will not be an economics phd forum anymore, but it will just be economics forum as people will be discussing about all sorts of issues. People will be discussing about a lot of things after the phd is completed such as jobs, tenure etc. I can imagine people currently in the forum now will still be here after even 10 years, because this forum mainly gives everyone a break, a nice distraction. Imagine how lucky the undergrads will be at that time (in terms of getting advice)!!

I think it is usually the latter case. Departments slowly increase in size and can also gradually support a bigger student body. I dont think top10 departments want to lose out any students on whom they are investing their time and money.

Umm, just curious, doubtful, why did you bring up this post where the last two people discussed the post in the December of 2006? I am pretty sure the person who asked for advice then, is still not waiting for an advice in the October of 2007. Again, I am just curious.:hmm:

We always hear that "lukewarm" letters are not good and should avoid it at all possible costs... but what does a lukewarm letter usually mean? Can anyone give an example or idea of what will be the contents of a lukewarm letter? or how it might sound like? if someone has 2 very good leteters and 1 good letter, then will that 1 good letter become a lukewarm letter? Thanks in advance

What are the difference between different finance phd programs? Can I just choose some schools according to the rankings and apply, or do the programs specialize in some specific field? Also, is there a good source where I can find out which programs are good in what field?

Sorry to hear about you IntEcon80. I hope they apply GPA inflators for majors like theoretical physics. Also, I thought it was only the top 15 programs or so which sort out applications first using the GPA and GRE lower bound, and Schools other than that goes into deep into applications and transcript, and does not throw out applications using GPA lower bound (maybe, just maybe they do it for lower GPAs like below 3.4 or sth). But still the question remains, how they really compare students' grades across schools? It seems that LOR should be the most important factor, but I dont happen what happens in reality... Anyone with an opinion, please contribute.

Hahaha. I think aspencolorado will be away for sometime after the last treatment he got in his thread, and a disagreement which started in another thread. :D

IMF and World Bank are also great options. I would definitely try to get an internship in those organizations
