  1. Thanks arun. Actually I heard students with admits to toledo university are getting their visas rejected. :shy: With regards, Bhavana
  2. Hello everyone. I have a GRE score of 5.5/6 awa, 730 verbal, 760 quant, [1490/1600] 82% average in 6 semesters. Toefl. 293/300. I am the topper for all the 3 years in a class of 32 [information science engineering] and for the second and third year to the college [across all engineering disciplines]. I am applying for ms in cs, fall 2004. I have no idea how to calculate my GPA. The univ topper has at the most 85% avg. I can afford upto 17,000 usd per year. It would be very helpful if I get aid before going to US. Reason is obvious.. ļ I suppose it would simplify the visa procedure. So here is my list. I need to prune it to 6-7 universities. Please help me. Any suggestion is most welcome. I would be happy to know about cheap universities or universities where my marks will definitely fetch me aid, so that I can use them as safe bets. SUNY, stony brook //how is the aid scene here? how abt buffalo? Virginia Tech // My dream school. I heard it is great for wireless. Univ of Texas, Dallas // my consultant is in love with this school Texas A & M University // Is it true that this school has a very fickle admission policy? Michigan State University // ???? Univ of California, Irvine/San diego/Santa Barbara // which is best? Univ. of Florida,Gainsvelle //someone told me aid is good Univ. of cinncinnati Univ. of Massachusetts, Lowell. // actually, I sent my gre/Toefl scores to ahmherst, but that school is impossible for me I suppose. why waste dollars I can ill afford? Western Kentucky University // the out state tuition is 4500 usd/sem and they say they will waive 2000 usd/sem for all students.. sounds too good to be true Univ. of Idaho Moscow // sounds real cheap. maybe they will offer me an assistantship Univ of Maryland Baltimore County // how about this school? Univ of Delaware Wayne state university Univ of Toledo Drexel univ Iowa state RPI Kansas state univ
  3. Hi chebode2 Thanks awfully. Since you are a Oregon resident, your feedback regarding Portland st. univ is invaluable. I have heard oregon abounds in forests. Is it true? Good luck with your exam. I am sure it will be a lark. :) with regards, Bhavana
  4. Hi pohleechua The best strategy for verbal analogies is to make a bridge for the stem pair. i.e to relate the two words by forming a sentence. [The stem pair is the first part] ex. Hammer : carpenter :: a] reins : horse b] brush: painter c] shaves : barber d] anchor : sailor e] blueprint : architect one bridge sentence for the stem pair could be A hammer is used by a carpenter as an essential tool. Is reins used by a horse as an essential tool? meaningless, isn¡¦t it? cross out choice a. Is brush used by a painter as an essential tool ? yes, keep it. BUT THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, don¡¦t stop until u have evaluated all the answer choices just because you found one that seems to fit. It is possible that there is another that fits even better. choice c is obviously, again, very absurd. Eliminate it. d and e are definitely tempting. When two or more choices seem to fit, you must find additional criteria to narrow down the choices to just one. Here, a sailor and an architect make use of an anchor and a blueprint respectively. But, they do not wield it in the same as a carpenter does a hammer or a painter a brush. They do not make things with them as painters and carpenters do with their respective tools. So, the correspondence between the stem pair and choice b is the closest. Thus, choice b is the answer. Here r a couple of links on this web page that might be of more help. If you keep on practicing, your performance on this part of the verbal section will improve dramatically. http://www.geocities.com/epsilon_lyra777/Verbal.html The difficulty level is very similar to the tests in powerprep. And believe it or not, in my case, I got exactly the same scores in the real test as I had in powerprep . Barrons is good. But you MUST go through the math review that comes with powerprep. The formulas given at the end of Kaplan r very useful. Study coordinate geometry and statistics [mean median mode] thoroughly. I got 3 questions on slopes. And thanks a lot for your advice. The first sem fees idea is great ƒº If you have any doubts regarding verbal, please feel free to ask. And here is a word I had never seen before the test, breezeway. According to the Webster¡¦s New world dictionary, breezeway n. a covered passageway, as between a house and garage, often enclosed on the sides
  5. Hi hellogmat. U r right. My school choices r not ideal. The problem is, I dont know anyone in USA, no one from my college or in my family has ever gone to USA [or to any foreign country for that matter] and most of my family members r agriculturists or teachers - u get the picture. I didnt attend coaching classes, so my only resource was the internet. I selected the colleges by a very hapazard criteria - Mich St Univ because it mentions TAs, Portland because its cheap [tuition only 8000 per year ] , Univ of north carolina Charlotte because I couldnt locate Univ. Minnesota Twin cities frm the list at the exam center, and Univ. of Mass. Ahmrest because someone told me all admits come with aid. [ This is a very powerful incentive][w00t] But, yes what u say makes much more sense. I visited dozens of university websites. I was quite intimidated by some of their requirements. Which universities r into hardcore research? Does GA Tech mean Georgia Institute of technology? I was told that unless I get 800 on quant, there was no meaning in applying to universities that are ranked above 35 :D Could u please tell me how I can contact the professors and students? I have been stressing the US 20,000 dollar limit for 2 yrs because today when we contacted the local bank, they told me thats what they can provide. Sometimes I feel, I have been too presumtuous. I have dared to dream too far, too much. Yours gratefully, Bhavana
  6. Hi GREsweden. To admit the truth, I studied verbal very little. I have been reading english literature since childhood, so it helped now. My friends did very badly on verbal though, even after memorizing barrons and gurus. So, this is my opinion [ after considering my own experience and that of 3-4 of my classmates]. To remember words, learn them thoroughly, i.e with roots, any anecdotes related to them, etc The best book for mastering a large number of GRE type words is "Word power made easy" by norman lewis. Once you read this book, u wont forget the words in it even if you want to. Dont be intimidated by the size of the book. Its just like a novel:D After that, get a book called "All about words, an adult approach to vocabulary building" by Maxwell Nuremberg and Morris Rosenblum. I borrowed this book from the local library just 3 days prior to my exam to ascertain where I stood. I made a list of 20-30 unfamiliar words from this book. I got three words from this list, out of which 2 were in the first 10. So u can imagine how helpful it was. This book has most of the important words u will need. I gave such a lengthy explanation because only wordlists arent much of a help. It is not just the meaning, but the shades of meaning that is important. So, u have to make a thorough study of words, from various angles. Most of my friends lost points on RCs I got 3. 1 was pretty tough. I think I lost most of my points there. It was at the end, and I was running out of time. The antonyms were easy. Analogies were a little tough. I think I saw a couple of questions from powerprep. One of them was surely an antonym. Do study the high frequency list in Barrons, I saw some words had indeed appeared from this list. My quant score is not that good. :) I have a learning problem with certain branches of arithmetic. after the first question, I got 7 successive questions on statistics i.e mean -median- mode. The first graph question was also Then, coordinate geometry started. It was weird, believe me. Big book is easy compared to the real thing. I think the best preparation is the questions given in powerprep. I got two variations of the same question during the quant test. I got only one quant and one verbal. The third was an identified quant research section. Any other questions ? With regards, Bhavana
  7. Hello vinay. :) Thanks a lot for replying. How much does it cost to attend michigan state university? can I get aid before going? A teaching assistantship would be very helpful. [The 20000 us dollar limit, perhaps I should buy a playwin ticket :shy: ] Yes, I am applying for cs. Are there any other universities I could choose? cheap and yet good ? I finished my toefl too. 30 listening, 30 reading comprehension 13-20 structure. 243-300 score range.
