  1. You've got a really good start, and you're in a really similar situation that I was in. I would definitely recommend taking Ph.D. Micro and doing whatever you can to develop good relationships with your professors so that they can write you a good LOR - whether it be an honors thesis, more grad classes, trying to be a research assistant, etc. Also, I would try to get professors who are well published to write your LOR's. Here is a link to my profile and results but I think that you will probably have a little bit better success that me (as Boulder is a better school than OSU). Also, I feel that I wasted my time applying to MIT and Harvard. I probably would have had better luck at Chicago. I'm not basing that on anything though.
  2. It sounds like you have one hell of a start. I would talk to your professors as their advice is probably much better than ours. Other than that, you might want to throw in a Probability Class or Math Stat.
  3. I'll see you there in the Fall.
  4. I haven't heard anything yet either. I agree 100% By the way, congrats buecon08!
  5. I haven't heard anything either...and it's slowly killing me. However, I e-mailed the department today asking when we could expect to hear back from them. I let you guys know if, and how, they reply.
  6. One last question (that has probably already been addressed), what have the placements been like for the middle of each graduating classes. Like the 25-75 percentiles?
  7. I also waiting on the second round of offers..I hope they come this week.
  8. PROFILE: School: Oklahoma State University Type of Undergrad: Economics (Honors) and Mathematics Undergrad GPA: 3.9 (4.0 Econ, ~3.8 Math) Type of Grad: none GRE: V 530, Q 790, A 5.0 Math Courses: Calculus 1-3, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Calc. of Several Variables, Intro. to Modern Algebra, Intro. to Modern Analysis, Mathematical Statistics 1 & 2, Mathematical Modeling, Advanced Calc 1. Two tenured Econ professors and my Intro. to Analysis prof Research Experience: honors thesis, but nothing substantial Teaching Experience: none Research Interests: Applied Micro, Micro Theory, Behavioral and Experimental SOP: I put some time into it but it was essentially the same for each school; I just changed a few sentences here and there. Other: RESULTS: Acceptances: Duke($$) Wisconsin (no$) Ohio State ($$) UIUC ($$) Arizona ($$) Waitlists: NYU Rejections: Harvard M.I.T. Northwestern UCSD Penn State RA position at NYC Fed What would you have done differently? I would have tried to pick programs that fit my interests better and probably would have applied to more schools - especially in the 10-25 range. That's really about all I would have changed.
  9. What is the attrition rate at NYU like? Also, with the standard stipend provided, do those of you attending live comfortably in NYC?
  10. They're really waiting until the last minute aren't they
  11. Assuming you're referring to Ohio State, it seems like a very strong program. I am particularly interested in Micro and the micro people there are very strong. Especially if you're into uncertainty and experiments. That being said, I can't really speak for the rest of the fields. Also, the graduate director seems very committed to the program. In fact, from what I understand from the grad students he almost obsesses about it. This is definitely reflected in the fact that they are having fewer students leave the program after the first year. So, one shouldn't be worried about them trying to run people off. The primary form of aid for the first year is fellowships and subsequent years funded mostly through teaching assistantships. Although a few RA positions are available. Nevertheless, the grad students claim that the TA positions are a fairly easy workload. All the graduate students I met were very friendly and easy to talk to, as were most of the professors. They all seemed to enjoy the program and seemed to like living in Columbus. The only really downside I could find is that their placements are not as good as I would have liked them to be. However, they do have a few outstanding ones from year-to-year, but the ones at the bottom of the class seem to be less than stellar. But, there doesn't seem to be any reason that you couldn't get a good placement out of the program if you produce good research. In short, it seems like a very solid program with good resources, faculty that care, and happy grad students.
  12. a second round of funding offers is supposed to be made in about a week or so. Definitely before April 15th.
  13. I just got the schedule and it says that there are 34 people going. So, I imagine that there are quite a few from TM going.
  14. I have no idea on the rankings, but they are definitely one of the better places to study micro and experimental outside the top 20. Plus, I know that they are making an effort to higher better people and are trying to attract better students in order to get better placements. They seem like a program that is trying to move up in the rankings and are willing to invest a lot in their graduate students. On another note, how would everyone compare U. Az to Ohio State?
  15. my standing offer is $5 (it would be more but I just got back from Vegas). Any takers?:hmm:
  16. If i could change my vote, i'd change it to: waitlisted, definitely attending if accepted. Keep that in mind all of you who have been accepted and aren't going there ;) (i hate using this emoticon but it is the only thing that came to mind to convey my tone)
  17. bump....I've been gone for awhile and was wondering the same thing. Also, how many people have been waitlisted but won't be attending anyway? p.s. I'm fully aware of the "what happened to NYU" poll.

  19. I don't think so. If you class is anything like the one at my school then you shouldn't have a problem. Here it is typical for most people to fail it at least once and there are usually only one or two A's a semester (depending on who is teaching it). It seems like our math department prides itself on making it, in their words, "the hardest UG class offered at our university". So, no it shouldn't hurt you, especially if when you do apply one of your LOR's addresses it. Just make sure that writer has a very high opinion of you though.
  20. Congrats InternationalStudent08!!!....looks like I have a long day of waiting ahead of me for tomorrow and friday.
  21. Duke (3/31-4/1) Ohio State (4/4-4/5) :luck2: UCSD (???)
  22. Congrats Andronicus! Are you planning on attending the campus visit?
  23. I've heard that it is hard to get funding to UCSD. Does anyone know anything about this? Also, who would go there even if they weren't offered funding for the first year, but guaranteed funding for subsequent years with satisfactory progress?
