  1. Do all PhD programs cut some applicants who do not meet a certain GPA and/or GRE threshold through a first round or is such a practice limited to the Top programs only? I wonder if the lesser known programs that receive less than 100 applications a year read all applications regardless of GPA and/or GPA before making a decision
  2. Last year Rutgers received 345 Applications and admitted only 23 % of them. If a school like Rutgers is that selective then I wonder what it is like at the Top 10 schools.
  3. I am a macro guy, I can see most of you guys wish you never had to take macro lol. I wish only one, yes one, course in micro is required instead of two.
  4. congratulations! I applied to Rutgers as well, but no news so far. How did you find out? by email or website? Maybe a reject is on its way for me.
  5. I submitted all the required materials over 3 weeks ago to Notre Dame, but my online application status is still marked as incomplete. The deadline was on Jan 14. I email the grad school but no reply thus far. Anyone faced similar problem?
  6. Antichron of MIT still contributes and often provides good insights
  7. wow WUSTL is making some great moves!
  8. I should have elaborated more about "programming skills". If one is interested in a career in finance, good coding and modeling skills using C++ will be very useful and will greatly enhance one chances to land a good job. I am not familiar with private sectors jobs for economists outside of finance, but you provided useful info
  9. to get a good job in the private sector, you need good programming skills. Theory is wonderful, but people in the real world don't have the same patience as academics.
  10. 9 people participate in the decision process, what would the verdict be if 5 say "yes" and 4 say "no"?
  11. hi, I applied to a program using Embark and under a field called "Application Complete for evaluation" it says "True" next it. Does it that my application is complete and ready to be forwarded to my program? My guess would be yes otherwise the word "false" would be used instead. Do you know of any other program that uses such a field? Thanks
  12. I do not think you can find a good answer to your question. As more and more students find out about testmagic and post their profiles, one might be inclined to believe that a given year is more competitive than another.
  13. Antichron, how is Daron Acemoglu? Is he as good in teaching as he is writing top-notch papers? He is quite a smart guy
  14. 26. You are crazy lol. I know the process is random but 26 is a lot and probably cost $$$$$
  15. I would only be concerned if I was to ever study at Harvard lol. No but on serious note though its no big deal.
  16. Maybe "hard" was not the correct word. The NY Fed get more applicants than the other Feds, hence the difficulty to get in relative to the other feds. The NY Fed is full of Harvard/MIT and other undergrads from the Top schools at the Research Assistant level. I was able to gather this information from my girlfriend who is currently a research assistant there. But I will try to find out more useful info and let you know.
  17. so I can be Dr! Its so exciting.... No, just playing. I do enjoy research. Hopefully I will have some opportunities to do some interesting work in computational macro if I get into a descent program-It does not look too promising so far because some of you have amazing profiles and if I have to compete with some of you guys to get in, it won't be easy.
  18. I think the question should be how hard is it for an applicant to reject an offer from Harvard or MIT?
  19. sometimes when I read these posts on testmagic, I asked myself if some people actually have a life besides school? There are so many fun things out there to do. lol
  20. 1) how do authors affiliated to different institutions decide to work on a paper together? 2) How do graduate students manage to co-author by the time they graduate? 3) can you walk me through the process of co-authoring? ie, how are tasks assigned? who gets to have most of the credits? 4) Is it common for a professor to change his mind and quit on collaborating with a grad student should the later not be making meaningful contributions? 5) Finally how long does it take, on average, from working paper to publication in Top journal? Thanks
  21. Now another rant. In my quantum mechanics course the teacher had the worst grading scheme I had ever seen. He would only give A, B, C, or F. No A- or B+ Many us ended up with B. We complained but he could care less and used his stupid grading scheme. Its a big jump to go from A to B, he should have allowed for A- and B+.
