  1. Dear All, I took a long break from the Testmagic after my disasterous performance in GMAT. I am planning to take GMAT again after a sound preparation. A open request to all of you folk: " Please suggest me some preparation tricks".
  2. Hi all, I got an extremely disappointing score of 480 (Took my test on Dec/3rd). That was a real shocker after all the genuine efforts. I am thoroughly shattered. The entire exam went well till I reached verbal section. I planned out in advance the strategies for each section.I prepared the templates for both the essays. Before starting the exam, I prepared an entire check list to manage my time during both quantitative and verbal sections. Executed each one of them very well - first for the two essays, which I did very well. Then the quantitative section, which I performed fairly good enough, except for a few very hard questions. The verbal section was a disaster. I just could not overpower it. I could not execute any of my strategies for the various types of questions. Time just flew by and I was left with about 10 questions to blindly guess. I think all the guess work went wrong. I made a major blunder of not practicing very hard questions in verbal under time limit in the last few days. In the last 20 minutes of the verbal section, I simply lost my cool because of the time pressure due to which I was rereading the questions more than thrice just to understand them, which resulted in much more time consumption. My final scores quantivative - 41 and verbal - 16 ( Total : 480 ). I never got a score so low as this in verbal. My usual scores( in various exams such as Princeton, Powerprep, Crack GMAT and 800 scores ) are quantivative: 42 - 48 and verbal : 32 - 40. Among the last few tests that I took, I score 730 (48 Q and 41 v) in powerprep test 1 ( The score was a bit influenced from my previous preparation from OG) I should have cancelled the scores, but I never expected such a low score. The minimum score I ever got was in Kaplan 2 test - 560 ( 34 Q and 28 V), which I took in the last week of October,2003. My TOEFL scores are 270 with 5.0 in writing assessment. I just cannot imagine scoring so low. Can anyone please answer my following questions. 1) Should I retake GMAT and even if I get a good score the next time, will my present score hamper my chances of getting into some of the B-Schools . I wish to pursue my Ph.D. 2) If I retake GMAT in the next calendar month, will that not be too late for admissions to most of the B-Schools. Please advice. Thank you very much in advance.
  3. Please suggest a faster method of solving this problem. Thanx 1. On July 1, 1982, Ms. Fox deposited $10,000 in a new account at the annual interest rate of 12 percent compounded monthly. If no additional deposits or withdrawals were made and if interest was credited on the last day of each month, what was the amount of money in the account on September 1, 1982? (A) $10,200 (B) $10,201 © $11,100 (D) $12,100 (E) $12,544 Answer: B
  4. Please rate my essay at the earliest. I have my test on dec/3rd. Thanx essay: Whether to have managers with leadership skills or with expertise and work experience is the question on hand. In my view, the both the ability to lead and the expertise with work experience are a prerequisite for one to be an effective and efficient manager. On one hand, the ability to lead a team is an important quality that cannot be ignored. For Instance, a good manager is one who takes up well-calculated challenges and accomplishes them by taking along the team members. A manager needs take up the responsibility of acquiring, allocating and adjusting the resources at hand. He or she needs to motive the team to achieve the set goal. Similarly, A good manager is one who understands the needs and wants of each individual member of the team, correlates the goals of individuals with the goals of the team and organisation. In summary, the manager is supposed to have leadership qualities so as to bring the best in the team. On the other hand, one cannot ignore the importance of expertise and work experience. A manager, however good in leadership abilities, if lacks expertise and work experience is bound to struggle to succeed, if not fail. For instance, in professional teams, the manager needs to have some expertise in the field of interest of the team. A football team manager needs to have some knowledge in football game and the management of the football team. Similarly, the need for work experience also places an important role. A manager who lacks work experience in the area in which the team works would face practice problems on the field. For example, a manager with theoretical knowledge in the field of expertise and with good leadership skills would not be as effective as a manager who possesses all the three - leadership skills, expertise and work experience. This is because one tends to learn more by experience. In sum, though leadership skills play an important role in making a manager successful, the lack of expertise and work experience would definitely undermine the abilities of a manager. Thus the best bet would be to have a manager who has the ability to lead, the domain knowledge and sufficient work experience.
  5. Hi gracehu and sujayath, That truly helped! I had one more question. Posted - 2003 Nov 22 : 19:25:23 Also, do we frequently get Analytical reasoning questions in GMAT. I hardly came across any such question in the GMAT prep material. I suppose GMAT usually concentrates on Logic Reasoning. Am I right? Please reply... Can some one please clarify my doubt. I went through some LSAT analytical questions. They look quite different from the critical reasoning questions that we usually get in GMAT. Do we get such analytical reasoning questions in GMAT? Thanx.

  7. Hi all, Q: Reading skills among high school students in Gotham have been steadily declining, which can only be the result of overcrowding in the schools. Which of the following , if true , most seriously weakens the argument expressed above? A) The high school system in Gotham succeeds in giving students a good education at considerably less cost than do most systems. B) Several cities have found that overcrowding in the schools is not always associated with lower reading scores. C) Gotham schools have a greater teacher-to-student ratio than most other school systems. D) Students' reading skills have not declined in other cites where the high schools are just as crowded as those of Gotham. E) Schools are not overcrowded in many cities where high school reading scores have declined more than they have in Gotham. ------------------------------ What is the difference between D and E. Please explain your answer. Can anyone please post some more causation questions. Thanx
  8. Hi sujayath, I see what you say. Thank you very much. Hi dig12us, you step : r/(r^2+2) = r/rXr+2 = 1/r+2 is incorrect. (r^2 + 2) is the denominator. You cannot seperate the denominator the way you did. r/rXr + 2 = 1/r+2 is incorrect. Hope I am clear. Regards
  9. Hi all, The question: Is 1/p> r/(r^2 + 2) ? 1) p = r 2) r > 0 my answer: A I multiplied both sides of the given inequality( which I considered true for the present) with p(r^2 + 2). The new inequality: (r^2 + 2) >rp . Need to find out whether this is true. now, the first statement p = r substituting in the inequality, we get: r^2 + 2 >r^2 which is true because r^2 is always positive. The second statement is insufficient. Hence my ans : a The official ans is C. (OG 10th Ed. - DS -Question no: 248 ) Can anyone tell me whether am I going wrong ?[:(!][:(!]
  10. Hi Maggy, Make a list of all the question types of Critical Reasoning. You can refer Princeton and Kaplan for these. Apart from the general question types mentioned in these books you also have hybrid questions. Make a chart which comprises of the methods of solving each question type. You can prepare a flow chart which represents the pattern of solving a c.r problem. For example, strengthening of argument question type: List the premises -> note the conclusion-> check the answer (Check for the ans, which is supported by premises & strengthens the conclusion). prepare a flow chart(kind of) for all question types and follow this chart for the first few tests in C.R . practice with the questions in [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip]. set time limit of the questions you do from [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip]. You will notice considerable improvement in your performance. All the very best!!!
  11. hi xcorp, please go through the sentence correction section in [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip]. analyse each and every question in detail. categorise them and make notes for each of the explanations. Also follow the sentence correction discuss forum in this website. you need to spare about 2 hours per day for sentence correction section alone so as to notice some improvement. The improvement would be gradual. Just keep practicing............ all the very best to you.
  12. Yes, Your answer is correct! Here is the explanation: Explanation If the wind chill factor is below zero and Susan is wearing her parka the sun should shine but since Susan is not wearing her parka the sun shouldn’t be shining. Hence (B) is the correct answer. Is there any specific method for solving these type of questions?? Like a Venn diagram method or something similar... Thank You
  13. Hi kuriang, I agree with your analysis and your answer. But the answer and its explanation provided by crack-gmat is quite confusing. Official explanation is: Explanation For 'weaken/strengthen' CR questions, use the 'so what' technique. After reading each of the options, ask yourself, 'so what?' Your answer will tell you whether the option weakens/strengthens the conclusion, or does not impact it. Option B directly strikes at the flaw in the spokesperson’s claims : if the communities have been using the water from the same source (the local wells) for a long time, the high cancer rate would have been there even before the plant was established. Since this is not so, the spokesperson’s claim is weakened. Options A and D are irrelevant, and option C does not strike at the spokesperson’s claim. Option E actually strengthens the claim. Hence (B) is the correct answer. Now, I don't understand why "c" does not strike at the spokesperson's claim?? Please help... Thank you
  14. When the sun is shining and the wind-chill factor is below zero Susan wears her parka. Whenever it is raining and the wind-chill factor is above zero Susan wears her raincoat. Sometimes it rains when the sun is shining If the above statements are true which of the following must also be true? (A) If it is not raining and Susan is wearing her parka the sun is shining. (B) If the wind-chill factor is below zero and Susan is not wearing her parka the sun is not shining © If the wind-chill factor is below zero and it is not raining Susan is wearing her parka (D) If the wind-chill factor is below zero and it is raining Susan is wearing her raincoat (E) If it rains while the sun shines and the wind-chill factor is zero Susan wears her parka. This question is from the first test of crack-gmat. Do we get such type of questions in actual GMAT? Thank You
