  1. great news Dionysus, an acceptance at last, it is surprising that you have waited that long for an accept, best of luck ýn your graduate studies.
  2. Thanks Wood, I hope international list has not been finalized yet, oth. bye bye Rutgers. I am still to hear from UPenn, UMich, UMass, WUSTL, Pitt, and UCSC. I wonder whether I have made a mistake of applying too many state schools or not because of the huge budget cuts on them.
  3. It only means that decisions after April 15 are legally binding, ye schools usually do not insist on students who do not want to come to them. It is just a legal protection mechanism for universities not to miss their favourite applicants, yet no one seems to use it though. By the way, Wood, when and how did you receive an offer from Rutgers? I am still waiting for a response them. Do you know whether they have finalized all of their decisions or not?
  4. Congratulations Nonevent, wonderful admits, best of luck in your graduate studies. By the way, may I ask why you have applied OGI since there is a massive difference between the first 5 and OGI, it seems too safe even for a safe bet.
  5. Randhawa, check out the following link... http://forums.prospero.com/usnews_grad/start
  6. Applied to Umass and Pitt, no news about admissions yet, expect dates close to March 15 for those schools.
  7. TOEFL and GRE codes are not always different, indeed for most of the schools they are the same. Yet, it will be better if you ask the university about it.
  8. Actually you can jump to any of the links that are presented in Google, first of all you need to learn how basic matrix operations are done, how to plot graphics, then move on to basic programming constructs. After you have finished basics, you have to check out the specific tools in Matlab which are designed for your field of study (if there are any). Best way to learn Matlab is ofcourse hands down experience, find a computer with Matlab and start studying, you will see it is not that difficult. I have checked some links in Google, these ones seem fine to me. http://www.math.mtu.edu/~msgocken/intro/intro.html http://web.mit.edu/afs/.athena/astaff/project/logos/olh/Math/Matlab/Matlab.html http://www.math.ufl.edu/help/matlab-tutorial/ links to Matlab tutorials http://www.indiana.edu/~statmath/math/matlab/links.html http://www.glue.umd.edu/~nsw/ench250/matlab.htm Just begin from somewhere you will be fine. A good state school, although I dont know much about your profession, I think they probably have a competitive program.
  9. Matlab is the standard programming tool for making computational tasks easily. MatLab means "Matrix Laboratory" and as its name implies it was once a tool for making Matrix operations for linear algebra, now it is a fully fledged program with lots of tools for control, signal processing, statistics, financial calculations, mathematics, etc, etc, etc with a lot of functions written for you to make your calculations easier. If your work is heavily reliant on mathematical calculations you have to learn it, though it is a very easy program to learn so dont worry much about it. Yet I found it a bit slow if you write the code as in a standard programming language. If you write "Matlab" on google, I am sure you will find lots of information about it, also you can check out the help pages of the program itself.
  10. In my opinion, retaking GRE should be decided after you receive your AWA. Also It is not that easy to raise your verbal score as it seems. Although the adaptive algorithm gives scores generously in Q (I got 800 with 4 wrong first time, 790 with 5 wrong second time), the same does not occur for verbal. You also need a bit of luck. I got 690 in verbal with 6 wrong because of stupid series of questions. I had only 2 questions wrong in the first 15, the problem is that stupid algorithm did not ask any question with difficulty 5 (highest one) after I got the second question (with 5 difficulty) wrong. Even though I made a series of 10 correct after that, the algorithm was stuck with questions of difficulty 4. I think the computer immediately drew the conclusion that I wont make 700+ after my first mistake. Also as you can see from the percentages, the 99% kicks in 730, scoring above it becomes extremely difficult. So dont bother retaking unless your AWA is really low.
  11. Still waiting for results for CS PhD. No news yet from Upenn, Umich, Umass, Rutgers, Wustl, Pitt, and UCSC.
  12. Well done VasantiKaVeeru, choose where you like most, best of luck in your graduate studies!!
  13. Hi sh123sh, I said usually, of course there may be exceptions. However a better expression may be PhD decisions are usually finalized before MS decisions are finalized. And I hope so because I am also tired of waiting and checking my e-mail 20 times a day after 17:00 here.
  14. They are not only hard to get into but also hard to finish. Assuming you are going for PhD, professors will not let you live your own life (man, we are talking about millions of dollars of research projects here, who will care about you :) ) that is why I urge you to enjoy your life before beginning!!! For your application I couldnt see any deficiencies, plus most importantly you have 4 publications which will make a huge difference if they are good. Good luck.
  15. Dont bother retaking courses, dont be nervous about your school, enjoy your time before beginning grad school. (I think you are on the way to a very difficult school :)))
