  1. Hi Everyone, I see Analcagon and a few others discuss the basic courses required for a PhD in finance. Was just wondering if anyone investigated what courses would be basic and great building blocks for an Accounting PhD...(Aside from the fact that most schools do have a required set and you can take a few extra ones).
  2. Well Euges, I completely agree with you on this one. I for one was quite happy with my masters program in Montreal cause I hardly had any students of Indian descent (like me) but there were an awesome lot of chinese students and it did tend to tip the balance a bit cause that broader perspective is quite lost. But I also think that immigrants have a harder time integrating into Canadian work force, and as such the Phd becomes the next option after the master's hence the larger number of applicants. But these are just my impressions. I also faced the Phd being considered the "bummers" route  but I guess its a function of our cultures were higher education is considered essential to survive (In india one cant really survive without a masters) and as such wanting to study more than pursue "gainful" employment is not something that sits well with family, et al once the master's is done with. I know you're sure of what you're doing and I know I am too :grad: and thats all that matters at the moment...They'll know how very very cool we are one day for sure !! :p
  3. Hey Euges, Nah, I dont think Hal and I mind that you work there part time. You still qualify for our mini group...heheh...Jokes aside, three of us from the three grad schools in Toronto (And surburbs). This should be interesting, to say the least. Halycon and you seem to be based in Toronto from what I noticed but I'll be shifting from Montreal only in the next couple months. Keep us posted... Nikki
  4. Hey guys, I see everyone going to the same schools trying to meet up...But most schools in Toronto have admitted single digit students, i guess, so I wanted to see if you guys wanted to gang up for a "Toronto Admits" instead :D. There'll be more of us and does'nt hurt to know a few more people, eh ? Peace !!
  5. Hey !!! I HAVE to defend accountng here...heheh.. I spent a fair bit of time in Investment-banking, earning pots of money but hating my job, eventually deciding finding my way to the Phd (accounting and not finance). To each their own I guess - I understand accounting bores you (I'm happy you know your mind) but many guys make decision based on what's selling more and some apply to multiple programs, eventually selecting schools rather that what fits them...Digressing from the main topic a bit - as a budding philosopher (ahem...), me thinks a lot has to do with the chase of trying to get to the top school, the top specialization, the top job...hehehe. So, I sent in by acceptance a couple days back and I'm now officially on appartment hunting in Toronto !! Peace...
  6. Hey everyone, Had a question about sending regret emails to B-schools where you'r not taking up their offer. What do you think should be in the email ? Should you just be saying you wont be able to take up the offer they put on the table or should you outline what in their offer didnt work for you or that you accepted a school that did suit your expectations ? Advise please:D
  7. Well...The UTD rankings seem to have calculated publications/prof, since schools with larger number of publications are lower in ranking, I can only assume that they have higher number of Profs
  8. Hey guys ! We'r all wishing well for you, so chin up ! :)
  9. Oooh...I'm behind news as well... Well Prawler - which school has waitlisted you ?
  10. Hey Kee...I'm in the same boat ! I got a date to give my GMAT at the end of the first week of January 2008, and I thought I'd only have time to apply to the Canadian school where I did my masters but I got a really good GMAT score and burnt midnight oil and money to get in about 4 applications. Have an admit from one of my preferred schools and a conditional one from another I'm not that keen on. Boy, do I feel blessed ! Ofcourse, no news from UfT. Let me know if you hear from them. Are you based in Canada Kee ? I'll Pm you... Nikki
  11. Hey ! I'm Indian too and a girl to boot and I wanted to put in my two cents worth. Ancalagon - I know your family wants the best for you, but you have to find what you is that you should be doing !!. For someone with as good a profile as your's - I feel you need to develop some perspective on how short your life is and how shorter your productive life is. One of the most important questions in many successful people's life is (after they have it all is) - What is that they were meant to do in life. I had the fortune of getting to that question much before (not sure if I have the answer of not). Make a life a conscious decision based on your capabilities and dreams. Trust me, in the longer run, if you'r happier, so will your family be...I dont know what else to say or how to say it but awareness in the key :)...Peace !!! Based in Canada - Applied to 4 Canadian schools (Did'nt have much time) - Admit from 1 (2nd on my list); conditional admit from another. Not heard from other 2.
  12. Well...sometimes its all about learning from your experience. Maybe you need to go with the flow. In the larger picture of your life, I'm sure this is important but no so important that you waste 2 months of your life feeling depressed and low. Try and pep yourslelf up - when the admit you want actually comes, wont you think it foolish to worry so much. Every time you heart sinks, its like a minute stroke for your heart. Multiply that by years and years of doing that by habit and you're doing you body serious harm. Chill...because worry is not getting you closer in any case !!!
  13. Rainbown...just look for a complete list of topics and see what you're weak in. I would tell you what topics I did, but that might not be YOUR weak areas ! There are no formulas...just plug your gaps !!
  14. Hi Rainbownlife, I honestly dont remember the websites I used but if you'll do a good google search, you'll find many websites of grad schools and teaching centers and free preparatory websites. Again, I only picked up on what was unclear to me...So you find what you dont know :)...Good Luck
  15. Hi Crazy 1, I would suggest that before you make any study plans, you take a diagnostic test or evaluate yourself and be sure of what your strengths and weaknesses are. The GMAT exam does not reward you for a study plan or finishing the same books that everyone's done or anything like that. What the exam rewards is your knowledge, comfort level and speed, which can only be achived by focussed study...Wish you all the best
