  1. Buckyball, I didn't get in anywhere as well, mostly because I bombed the subject test and majored in Econ in my undergrad. But don't lose heart man. We can beat the test and get into a good school. In the end, no one will care whether we graduate in 2012 or 2014. Keep the faith!! :grad:
  2. :tup:Congratulations rebeca123!!! Which country are you from? NYU is an awesome place to be. I live in New York City and that would've been my first choice. It's awesome in Analysis and Applied Math. What's you field of interest? Great news!
  3. If I were you I'd call them on Monday morning. NYU has a stupid policy of admitting a bunch of students w/o any aid. :yuck: Though it is extremely unlikely that they admitted you w/o sending you an email. Never heard that before. Good luck!
  4. Anyone got accepted in Stony Brook and not going there?
  5. ficsur, I believe Stony is really very strong in topology. UIUC may be your best bet in Analysis. Are you absolutely certain about your decision to do Analysis?? Why did you apply to only 4 places? I'd say you god the winner's curse man; you would've made it into a top 10 school. You just caught the wrong tail of your distribution. We know it fairly well to be Gaussian when normalized. These outcomes are random variables of bounded variance and converge pretty quickly.
  6. I think there is undue weight given to the GRE Subject Test. Most Departments have a culture where everything else is seen as subjective. To be sure, recommendations are probably more important but as it works out its very hard to distinguish w/ them because everyone has good recommendations. Remember it is compulsory for the committee to rank applicants. Since almost everyone has a GPA in excess of 3.7 and great recommendations it usually comes down to the Math GRE. ETS is a pure monopoly due to network effects. They should at least hold the test more often so that one day's bad luck doesn't cost us one year.
  7. I spoke to the Columbia Math Dept Admissions coordinator in person. He showed me the list of 52 candidates who have been admitted. Every1 in has been emailed. U Chicago on the other hand has sent postal rejections. But some people have not received rejections yet. I think the explanation is that they have made 3 piles: accept, reject and wait&watch. What say? :hmm: Who has info on North Western?
  8. Its a good way to estimate the bell. Do you think the Math Subject Test was harder today than others in the cohort of comparision for the percentiles. In other words do the raw score - percentile chart under or overestimate your expected score? So, do you think today's test was harder than "normal"?? :hmm:
