  1. I am sorry that it seems a long story. This is the second year for me to apply schools in USA. Last year, I applied ph.D of economics but I failed. this year, I applied Master of Economics and I still have trouble. I took IBT twice, but the results are far from satisfactory, the second time is 99 with speaking 17(my god...such a low score but the first time I got 20, three parts are all fair...) NoW Boston University (I also applied last year.) sent email to inform me that their schools only admit students with speaking score 23 and NO EXCEPTIONS. I even write to the chairman of economics dept. He only felt sorry. Besides, I was adviced by the Assistant of BostonU that I can retake TOEFLand hopefully, I can reach their requirements... The deadline seems to be the end of March. My GOD! should I take again after two weeks' prepartion or should I give up such school? I have never received such email before. If necessary, I can share with you all the email...Such a bad experience.....on such a romantic day....
  2. Thank you for your information. Some Chinese students are excellent, I know this. Maybe I am far from "Excellent". I have also applied Washington U. St.louis but I do not think I can get AD. It is glad to meet you :)
  3. Maybe you are right. Try something easier. I have doubt my desicion about phd no master. But I still stick to it. Of course, I stick to it, it does not mean I am right. I think your advice is very helpful and thank you very much. But I , I really want a try, Ph.D... I just like academics. OK. At least, I tried.
  4. OK. Another comes as followed: "We have had time to review thoroughly your application, the supporting papers submitted in your behalf and the recommendation made by the department to which you have applied. I regret to inform you that on the basis of this joint consideration, we are unable to approve your admission to graduate study. Graduate education is characterized by extremely small classes and close mentoring by faculty. As a result, programs have only a limited number of available positions. Each year we receive many more applications than can be accommodated; consequently, many highly qualified applicants are often excluded." It comes from U of Virgina...I did not have much hope about this school when I applied it... I..I have nothing to tell about my application. But I really have some experiences to share with you: 1. It does not follow" the more, the better.." I have applied some schools, but I really receive "deny emails", a lot. 2... Wait and maybe later I can write more...
  5. thank you very much. You can expect how your words make me moved. I will keep on and work on.
  6. I have applied other schools. But maybe they are all too good for me. SUNY in Buffalo, which is said to be the safe school, enrolled students from Qinghua University. Rice U, Washington U in St.Louis, Northeastern U, Boston U...
  7. Thank you for all your words. I appreciate. Considering my background, i remembered I have posted some threads in this forum and described my background clearly. GpA 3.79, TOEFL 93, GRE 1310,3.5. My scores are not high. I study in Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade. As one LZ said," it is difficult for foreign students". the professor from Iowa said this to me... Thank you for your encouragement. I applied economics Ph.d, labor economics. Maybe my experience can be useful to you.
  8. This is the first rejected email I received this year. People always remember the "first time". So it is: "This notice is being sent by e-mail to speed up the notification process. You will also be receiving a letter in the mail. The Admissions Committee of the Department of Economics at Iowa State University has carefully reviewed your application to our program. Interest in our program has been very high, and so we are able to accommodate only a small fraction of the students who apply each year. The Committee's decision was to deny your application. We appreciate your fine qualifications and wish you the best as you pursue your academic goals." My background is written clearly in this forum. So not many things to say. Considering Iowa State U, I have connected to one professor in it. He is nice to me and tells me a lot about labor economics. And I sent email to him only to say "Thank you for your help. But I am rejected or Denied".... I believe more and more emails will come...to hit my head, hurt my heart.
  9. I am still working on my Ps and wating for my RL... ..while I heard some students already get offer from Us, one from NY.... Am I too late? Some school, like Iowa state ,Feb,1,2008...Am I too late for my application??? Worries no use, but I am still worried about it !!!!!! what about you, every one as me?
  10. After see so many friends' words, My feeling is complex. As a student in China, in a not good universtiy( I really hate to refer this, I believe this is not my fault, How can a school enroll the best students from other provinces except its own city>Cheating!>>>MY GOD!) I study finance and i want to pursue PHd of economics. The first time I came to know Chicago's economics, I never forgot the conversation: "Do you know UC? if you are admitted, that means in a few years, you will get Nobel!" "OH...OK...forget this school!" There is an old saying about : "I do not why I love you, I just want to tell you, I really love you. " the same to me. I want to UC, I admire everything about it! but to a Chinese student, without high impressive score, without strong background, UC is a dream not a goal. I know Passion is useless to realize a dream though it maybe help me to wrok for a goal. I think if UC could offer more chances to students, such like me, maybe, It can hold its statue in everyone's mind and improve its imagine in our kinds of people's heart. I never understand why a school can enroll student from his or her GRe or Toefl, everyone knows not everyone is good at "exams"....it is a little unfaire, isnot it?
  11. I agree with you that the Master of mathematics and statistics is more useful than economics to PHd. But not everyone can go to this master program...is it? Take me as an example: I study in finance, how can I apply a mathe master program? it is too high for me to apply Phd of economics because I lack of research background and a low score in Toefl.... so I have to apply master...
  12. I appreciate your encouragement. but if I have no research background, I do not know how to write my Ps and RL......I really do not know..what is the plan. Before, I believed I could apply Phd, whether the school is good or not so good. But, now, I am scared so much...I really want further study of economics in Amercia, I want Phd, because more probability to fellowship,,Now master, because I am really a bad girl...................:(..................I find : U of South California, has Master of economics, what do you think?
  13. "The B.A./M.A. program is open only to NYU undergraduates who are matriculated in the College of Arts and Science (CAS)." I see on the website of NYU 's economic program ......Faint....
  14. I am sorry if I want to apply master, because I am so bad that I do not thinkI can apply PHd, master OK? and do you have some advice about Master school?
  15. and I want to ask: if I do not have 100 IBt,,,,it means it is surely I would not be enrolled ..... right?/? SIGH.....................
  16. I think it is a good idea to have a job in NGO and IGOs, but there are not many schools offer master degree of development economics...,even master of economics.... To a phd, it is a specialized filed, development economics (just like public economics which I like too...but more difficult).... Do you have some suggestions?
  17. I am depressed after seeing so many "high" scores and what is said in econo.phd.net........... I major in Financial analysis in a school in Shanghai, China which no Us Universities know... I think I have too many disadvantages in application....... My Toefl is not high 93...the lowest is speaking... GRE V 520+790+3.5......... GPA 3. 79...... And NONE OF Three recommendation letters comes from Economists......MY GOD!!!!!!!! Maybe ONLY this exchange program of four months study European Marketing management in France has a little value............... I want to apply development economics in America, I do not hope a famous school.......could anyone give me some advice ........ I want to study development economics and public economics...............
  18. I appreciate all your comments here. For me, "studying in America" is my dream, I can not explain it logically. I am sorry for "Please don't apply to schools in the U.S. I'm american and i have to admit several grad programs I've been to suck. The professors are immature, dishonest, vindictive. You are better off with friendly European professors." , I think she is very honest and willing to help me. And I really thank you all, asquare, Trudog,Zoethor2 , for your sharing. And I want to know more about the different fields that Phd and professors are doing now. Could you help me find them out?
  19. Thank you . And I prefer the labor economics and public economics. I like the topics about Macro economics, fiscal policy as an example. I want to learn something about Central bank's economics behavior, but I do not know what is the exact name of the major or whether there is such a major...Would you like to share some information with me?
  20. I think you have a good backgroud. I just have searched some schools' information about Phd economics. In my opinion, you can apply MIT...have a try... the top one school in Phd economics
  21. Hi, everyone. I want to apply Economics Phd ( or Master, not master, because only a few schools offer this degree ) in America, and Now I do not know which should I learn, there are many different subjects in Economics Phd... All my application way is only beginning.....worried, afraid... Now I want to find out what is the hot topics in Economics and what the subjects in Economics Phd program ( I know one school is different from another, but maybe the first thing is I have to know what I can learn) I do not have a strong background, my scores are not high...But I really want to study...
