    U conn

Boston College is a good school with a pretty high ranking. I consider UConn and UMass as a backup school.
  7. Penn State interview is posted on thegradcafe. Does anyone get the email?
  8. omg, how long are they gonna make us wait? I hate myself clicking refresh button on thegradcafe. It's kind of hard to get any work done these days.
  9. Has anyone heard from Virginia Tech, Colorado-Boulder, UMass, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Penn State? I am thinking that Pittsburgh is done. UMass and Iowa just start sending out first round rejection, but I have no clue about the rest.
  10. Has anyone heard back from U of Iowa? I saw a rejection on gradcafe, but my status on the web is still under review. What does that mean?
  11. I probably should add list of classes that I have taken so far also: Math: Cal 1-3, linear algebra, real analysis 1-2, prob and stat, bus stat, time series (I got all As for my math classes) Econ undergrad: int micro, int macro, econometrics, money and banking, developmental econ (all As) Econ grad: micro (B+), macro(B), quant method (B), econometrics(A), public econ (B+), commodity market(B+), Agent base theory(audit), Finance: corp fin, investment, intermediate finance, advanced finance, security analysis, international finance, portfolio management (all As) Can anyone suggest some school names that I should look at? I would love to be in the big city if I can.
  12. I start thinking about applying to finance Phd. I don't really know where to start. This is my profile so far: Undergrad: Economic, Finance, and math minor (U of Northern Iowa) Undergrad gpa: 3.98 Grad:Economics (Iowa State U) Grad gpa: 3.38 (I know, it looks really badddddddddd) Certificate: CFA level2 candidate (keep my finger cross that I will pass level 2) Teaching Excellence Award from Iowa State GRE: math 800 verbal 370(very bad) writing 3.5 I guess my problem is my verbal score and low verbal GRE. I do speak english fluently, but the score shows otherwise. I do not know if I should take TOEFL to show that(I took this 5 years ago,and i got 577). Also, do you think what kind of school I should apply for, ranking about 30-50? Does PhD in Finance usually have full scholarship? Please help me where should I start. Do I have a chance to get in Phd with scholarship?
  13. I guess I'm an odd ball here. I hate going to school, but I want PhD, so I can work in an international organization like IMF, UN, or World Bank, etc. My goal, which is probably not realistic, is to work in developing countries and help these people improve their quality of life such as educating them or helping them start a small business. I also have to admit that I like money also. It would be nice to get pay well after having to pay so much for tuition.
  14. Iowa State, and declining UBC (crazy decision, but I think I make the right now, I hope anyways:)
  15. Just want to let you know, I will decline the offer at UBC. Call me crazy, but I feel that Iowa State is the right choice for me. I feel welcome there :)
  16. UBC sounds like the better choice for me. I'm trying to attend PhD in top 20-30 such as Johns Hopkins or Maryland. Do you think if that is possible? By the way, Iowa state just sent me an email to offer more money....
  17. One of them is mine. No joke. I got email from the professor Jon Faust
  18. Is the rejection real? I didn't get anything yet. What does it mean?
  19. After reading this thread, I want to kick myself for not applying to Queen, Toronto, or LSE. sighhhhhh Seems like everyone decline an offer at UBC
  20. Iowa state is MA-PhD track. That means if I'm doing good in the first year, I will be automatically become a PhD student in a second year if I choose to do so. I can take PhD classes there also, and it's not too hard to get through first year at Iowa state with a decent grade. Can I take PhD classes at UBC? Are there students, who is a middle range student, from UBC who want to do PhD and end up cannot get in a decent program?
  21. asianeconomist, that's possible since I don't have to tell them until May 1, just FYI.
  22. I'm trying to choose between these two schools UBC -MA pros: high ranking probably help me getting in a good PhD school later on will prepare me well for PhD in high ranking school Great location Cons: large class(50+), hard to get to know profs no personal advisor for thesis I won't have any TA/RA experience if I attend UBC have to reapply for PhD next year(or in 5 months) Iowa State pros: Funding small class size I will get a chance to be TA or RA, and easier to get a good letter of recommendation Cons low ranking good profs leave the school Any suggestion?
  23. Anyone try to call them? I called them a couple a time, but no one pick up the phone. Danny, we need you. Please tell the grad secretary to send out rejection letters.
  24. Great post darwinian, that's really encouraging :)
  25. Thanks guys for posting this. Save me sometime not having to figure out how to write a letter :)
