  1. Hi kotenok! It is very prestigious to be a known worldwide person, to have a lot of money, pretending friends and other things like that. Your statement is generally positive (the prestige of being famous) but the word "pretending" has a negative connotation. The form in which you used it is also incorrect - it should have been "pretentious". Hope that helps! Carol
  2. Hi Kotenok! I am not good at rating but I have added some comments in the text below. Hope you find them useful.:) Carol

    question

Hi all! I noticed we are asked if we agree or disagree with the statement made in most TOEFL essay topics. Are we allowed to sit on the fence? Carol
  6. Hi Fortune! I think "cherished convictions" here refers to cherished beliefs (e.g. believing in a higher supernatural being such as God...in fatalism..etc) that people hold. You can find the meaning in Merriam Webster online. Carol
  7. Hi Fortune, Your simplification of the sentence seems right to me...but I am a little confused as to what the sentence really means. From what I understand, someone who has a distinct characteristic of being doubtful has proven everyone else wrong in this case. The structure of the sentence is also wrong. Shouldn't it be: "It is his dubious distinction to have proven what nobody would think of denying, that Romero at the age of sixty-four writes with all the characteristics of maturity." Maybe someone else can help us here... Carol
  8. Hi forever 21! I agree with all your answers except Qn1. I think the answer is C The author mentions maps of newly discovered passages in the passage as example of a. information sources contributing to the 1st census b. early evidence of careful record keeping c. information kept secret by some nation d. the only surviving records of early civilization Any figures indicating a nation's military and economic power were guarded as state secret, like the maps of newly discovered passages through dangerous water to distant ports. For Qn 11, I think the sentence should come between "The ancient population counts among the egypyian, greeks, hebrews....." and "A different kind of accounting was the goal in the earliest recorded....." What do you think? Carol
  9. I agree with Dave. But can the answer for Qn 7 be © lecture:instruction ?
  10. Hi forever 21! Why don't you post your answers so that we can all discuss the questions rather than provide you with answers that can be wrong? Carol
  11. Good luck to you too, Salman :D!
  12. Thanks for your advice eagle! Good luck for your application![bounce] Carol

    Q 100-8

Thanks vbket! Where did you get the question/answer from? Carol
  14. Hi Rohit! 1. A mosaic a surface decoration made from tiles. A sampler is a decorative piece of needlework made from stitches. 2. Skirmish (minor dispute or fight ) is of little significance (insignificance). A duel (a formal combat in the presence of witnesses) is marked by formality. Carol
  15. That's great newone123! Just to mentally prepare you: (I presume it is the same in all places) 1. You will be required to fill out a survey on the computer at the beginning which will take up a bit of your time (I was most annoyed that I had to stare at the computer longer than I should![:(!]) 2.There will be an additional section either Q or V that ETS will include to test out questions that will not be included in your final score. The problem is you do not know which section is not graded- so you will need to answer all the questions as accurately as you can. This can be really mentally draining - I advise you to take the 10 mins break after your essays to freshen up. In your last week of preparation, go through plenty of simulated CBT to get the hang of it. You will need to get used to prolonged period of staring at a computer. And finally, like Erin said, have a good night's sleep the night before - Do not attempt to cram in anymore vocab words! Good Luck, newone123!!!! I'm sure you will be fine! ;) Carol
