  1. I skimmed the manhattan RC book though I didn't really use any techniques from it. As for math - the Manhattan Math book + the OG was all I really used.As I said before, it's all about drilling and practice. Got my AWA back today.. 5.5.
  2. Guys remember - the GMAT isn't a test of intelligence. It's a measure of how you think under pressure. The secret to doing well on it (and any other test in the world) is practicing in real world conditions. Throughout my life, I have studied for tests by doing as many practices as possible and THEN addressing weak areas. It makes sense because practice tests give you a benchmark and you can learn from your mistakes. Consider this - let's say you wanted to learn how to shoot a 3 pointer in basketball. How would you go about doing it? Reading as much as you could on the theory behind it... OR shooting the baskets while video taping yourself to see where you could improve. It's the same things with any tests or anything else in life. The more you practice, the better you'll become.
  3. cassy: download the GMATprep and do test 1 off the bat to see where you stand. From that, work out a study plan to tackle your weak areas. Do NOT do the 2nd exam until you have gone through test 1 several times.
  4. The sections of the verbal were comparative to the OG. Then again, given my low score there, it's really not surprising. A couple of the SC had me going WTF, but again, knowing the manhattan stuff along with the flash cards helped (ie.. pronoun antecedents, parallelism, etc). No repeat questions from the GMATPrep, but the level there will reflect the real test. I highly recommend doing them a couple of times as the actual thing is exactly the same. I think that's what helped me a lot on the test as well as I was so familiar with it. You WILL run into some quant questions (well, at the higher levels) that you will not have seen before. Some of them will require thinking outside of the box (like that stupid Sudoku question I ran into), but for the most part, if you know your concepts down cold, you'll be fine. Not much in terms of permutations and combinatorics - I found it more weighed towards number properties (IE.. xy > 0, if x Do the prep a couple of times and you're good to go. Really.
  5. Dont be scared. Keep in mind that unless you are getting a perfect score on the GMAT, you will end up getting about half the questions wrong. Just remember to pace yourself properly and be strong mentally. A GMAT isn't a test of intelligence, but rather how well you stand up under pressure. If you want hard questions, download the 800test questions. Those are HARD.
  6. No.. the hardest OG was easier than the test prep.
  7. I took it two days ago.. the GMATPrep is exactly like the real thing.
  8. R3 is typically more competitive than R1 and R2. With a 620 GMAT, you *might* be able to get in if you have really strong EC and are something that they don't already have, but I suggest taking it again.
  9. Disappointed I didnt get higher, but I'm not sitting through that again. Did a practise test on the kaplan site for shits and giggles on the 27. Decided on the 12th that I would do the gmat. Background 24 from Vancouver. 3.6 gpa in school.. out for 4 years. Work in finance industry. Very fast reader and decent with math. Prep After that, did an average of a test a day. I stopped looking at GMAT materials on the 19th after I did the last prep test. Did the test today on the 21st. 27-Jan-08 - Kaplan 36 34 570 12-Feb-08 - Petersons 42 26 570 13-Feb-08 - Petersons 44 28 600 14-Feb-08 - Petersons 49 31 660 14-Feb-08 - GMAT Prep 41 34 610 14-Feb-08 - GMAT prep 48 37 700 14-Feb-08 - GMAT prep 49 44 760 16-Feb-08 - Priceton 43 39 660 16-Feb-08 - Manhattan 48 41 730 17-Feb-08 - Kaplan 38 33 600 18-Feb-08 - GMAT Prep 50 44 760 19-Feb-08 - GMAT Prep II 49 38 720 As you can tell, a large part of my studying was focussed on doing the tests to get timing down. I should mention here that I could finish the practise exams in about 1.5 hrs not including the AWA parts.. I only did about 4 essays in total. After each test, I'd go through the answers to make sure I understood how it was done. In terms of reading material, I read through the manhattan SC, RC and Arth. I skimmed the OG11 once in the quant, sc and rc sections. Also did all SC questions in the OG once and about 200 of the 1000 SC. Did not practice RC and CR apart from on tests. I read Spidey's correction notes, but found the manhattan SC to be more helpful to be honest. The flash cards I went over 2 times as well. Note that there is an error in the quant section of the flash cards - odd x odd = ODD, not even like the flash cards say. Also skimmed a few questions here on the forums to see how things were done. I didn't really look at other books (briefly skimmed the McGraw Hill 2008, but got bored so stopped). Taking the test The felt pens and laminated paper really aren't a factor. I went through two books. I felt the AWA was pretty easy so managed to whip out something in about 10-15 minutes each. I gave myself another 3-4 minutes after writing each one to just sit there and relax. Took the 10 min break - drank some water, went to the washroom and had some apples. Did quant section.. started off *really* slowly.. too slowly actually. By the time I was at the 16th question, I was done to 30 minutes of time remaining so I had to blitz through the remaining questions faster than I would have liked. I got stuck on one sudoku type question that sucked up about 10 minutes..and I still couldn't get it. Note if you're hitting a lot of DS questions, then you're probably doing well on the Quant. I noticed that in both the MBA.com prep and the real thing. Took break, water, more apples (force feed yourself at this point even if you aren't hungry as you will get hungry during your verbal). Verbal.. not much there.. just your standard stuff. I did that section a little too fast me thinks (finished with 40 mins remaining) which contributed to my low score. Oh well.. it's done and I'm not going to bother rewriting to hit 730 which is what I was aiming for. Update: Got my AWA back - 5.5 - inline with what I expected.
  10. Country Amount Recycled, Amount not recycled a - 16,700 - 142,800 b - 8,800 - 48,000 c - 13,000 - 51,400 d - 3,900 - 20,300 e - 3,300 - 16,200 Which country had the lowest ratio of waste material disposed of to waste material recycled each year? Ok, I know that I could brute force this in a test, but I'd much rather not as it took me a good 10 minutes on my practice exam... how would one go about estimating the numbers?
  11. if ab!= 0 and points (-a,b) and (-b,a) are in the same quadrant of the xy-plane, is point (-x,y) in this same quadrant? 1) xy > 0 2) ax > 0 Man.. I didn't even know where to begin this question. From the statement, we know a and b is -ve or +ve. If xy > 0, then x and y are both -ve or +ve If ax > 0. then ax is either both -ve or +ve... but if we combined them together... we know that axy == all positive or all negative.. and dammit I figured it out while typing this out.
