  1. I took the GMAT this past saturday and got a 750. I think taking the test at Erin's Alma Mater, George Mason, was good luck!! Here's my breakdown: 48 Math (87th percentile) 46 Verbal (99th percentile) Practice tests PowerPrep tests: 740, 740 Kaplan Tests: 640, 640, 670, 670 I found the real test to be pretty close to the PowerPrep tests. The math on the real test is harder (not much harder), but the verbal section seemed a little easier. A friend of mine gave me the best advice in telling me to check out the testing center a week before my test. That way you don't have to worry about stress related to not being able to find the right room. On the day of the test, I arrived at the center about an hour and a half before I was scheduled to take the test. The guy at the center told me I could take the test right away, but since my heart was racing I decided to wait. It was nice because I was able to wait until I was relaxed before I sat down to take the test. Confidence seems to play a huge role in this test. So if you have been doing well on your practice tests, there is no reason why you can't do well on the real thing. Erin, I can't thank you enough for all your help. This site is amazing!!! I had always done poorly on the verbal sections of tests until this one...so this site helped me tremendously. I think the Crack GMAT tests are a waste of time, kaplan tests are harder than the real thing, but didn't seem like they tested the same areas. Erin, I wish you luck site !!!!! I will definitely be recommending people to this site. Thanks, again!!
  2. I saw that, but I interpreted it differently. When I read, "voice of the people of gotham city," ... I immediately think opinions/concerns/comments...So I concluded that even if it was reporting on out-of-town news it could still be a real voice of the people of gotham city. Myun, could you post the correct answer if you have it?
  3. since the GMAT doesn't delve into complex numbers, I would assume that the question wants you to realize that using ii) x and y both have to be equal to 0. x^2 + 4y^2 = 0 I'm guess that this was probably a crack-gmat question..doesn't seem like something they would ask on the real test.
  4. I know that "greater" is reserved for numbers...like The number of hospitals in this area is greater than 10. So why is the use of "greater" acceptable in this sentence? The gyrfalcon has survived a close brush with extinction; its numbers are now five times greater than when the use of DDT was sharply restricted in the early 1970's. A) extinction; its numbers are now five times greater than B) extinction; its numbers are now five times more than C) extinction; their numbers are now fivefold what they were D) extinction , now with fivefold the numbers they had E) extinction, now with numbers five times greater than. Answer is A.
  5. s to a to w ratio is 2:50:100 Ratio of s to a is 2:50 Ratio of s to w is 2:100 s to a ratio is doubled, so is now 4:50 s to w ratio is halved, so is now 1:100 triple ratio now becomes 4:50:400 new ratio of a to w is 50:400 or 1:8 So I would guess answer would be 800, answer E What's the correct answer?
  6. Sorry, Erin but I'm still having some problems with quantifiers. Kaplan said these are correct: A scant of news reports has shown ...... A series of UFO sightings has created a ..... I assumed these were plural. Are these sentences correct?
  7. She can sing better than me. or should it be: She can sign better than I.
  8. I would guess E (1) doesn't tell us anything by itself. (2) doesn't tell us anything by itself. Taken together: abc = 231 231 has factors 1, 3, 7, 11 so a, b, c could equal 1, 3, 77 or 3, 7, 11 or 1, 7, 33 or 1, 11, 21 In every case a + b IS less than c so therefore, need more information Is this what you got?
  9. Thanks for the help. I knew the answer had to be E, because it seemed too simple, but I wasn't able to picture a counterexample.
  10. Q: Is the quadrilateral ABCD is a parallelogram? 1) angle (ABC) = 90 2) angle (ADC) = 90 I would guess C, but know there is probably some trick to this. Do you always label quadrilaterals in this way? Imagine that this is a rectangle with 4 90 deg angles. A --------------------- B | | | | | | D --------------------- C
  11. Here is the example I found. This is from one of Kaplan's practice tests. Written in the early 11th century by Lady Murasaki Shikibu as a fictionalized account of political and romantic intrigue in the Japanese imperial court, literary historians consider The Tale of Genji to be the world’s first novel. A.) Shikibu as a fictionalized account of political and romantic intrigue in the Japanese imperial court, literary historians consider The Tale of Genji to be B.) Shikibu in the manner of a fictionalized account of political and romantic intrigue in the Japanese imperial court, literary historians consider The Tale of Genji as C.) Shikibu, a fictionalized accounting for political and romantic intrigue in the Japanese imperial court, literary historians consider The Tale of Genji D.) Shikibu as a fictionalized account of political and romantic intrigue in the Japanese imperial court, The Tale of Genji is considered by literary historians to be E.) Shikibu, The Tale of Genji is a fictionalized account of political and romantic intrigue in the Japanese imperial court which literary historians consider to be
  12. 1. Are you still reading the other newspaper in town? Did you know that the Daily Bulge is owned by an out-of-town business syndicate that couldn't care less about the people of Gotham City? Read the Daily Clarion, the only real voice of the people of Gotham City! Which of the following most directly refutes the argument raised in the advertisement above? (A) Over half of the advertising revenues of the Daily Clarion come from firms whose headquarters are located outside of Gotham City. (B) The Daily Clarion usually devotes more of its pages to out-of-town news than does the Daily Bulge. © Nearly 40 percent of the readers of the Daily Clarion reside outside the limits of Gotham City. (D) The editor-in-chief and all the other members of the editorial staff of the Daily Bulge have lived and worked in Gotham City for ten years or more. (E) The Daily Bulge has been published in Gotham City for a longer time than has the Daily Clarion. I would guess answer D The argument states that the Daily Clarion is the only real voice of the people of Gotham. This suggests that the Daily Bugle is not a voice of the people of Gotham. Answer D suggests that the editorial staff have lived and worked in Gotham City for the past 10 years. So what they print is a voice of the people of Gotham, since they in fact are people of Gotham City. Did I get close? It appears that there is something missing from question 2.
  13. I thought that the correct idiom is "consider.." and not "consider to be." I have come across some SC where the correct answer contains, "consider ..to be." Are these answers wrong, or is "consider .. to be" acceptable?
  14. Which one of these does the GMAT favor? Or will there be something else wrong with the sentence?
  15. It's a rectangular box with the dimensions 6 x 8 x 10. You have a total of six sides: 2 that are 6" x 8" 2 that are 6" x 10" 2 that are 8" x 10" Each of these three sides can be used for the base of the box. The problem states that the cylinder is standing upright, therefore, the base of the cylinder is constrained by the dimensions of the base of the box. The height of the cylinder is constrained by the height of the box. So take the first option... Base = 6" x 8" The maximum value for the radius of a cylinder is 3" because it is limited by the 6" side of the box. Since the box is 10" tall, the height of the cylinder cannot exceed 10" here. Now with the Base = 6" x 10" The maximum value for the radius here is also 3", again because the cylinder is limited by the 6" side of the box. Now the box is 8" tall, so the height of the cylinder cannot exceed 8". Base = 8" x 10" The maximum value for the radius here is 4". But since the height of the box is now 6", the height of the cylinder cannot exceed 6".
