  1. I couldn't take the suspense and called ETS to get my scores! I got a 6.0 for AWA! For all who didn't know (like me until a few minutes ago), you can get your scores through the phone by calling 1-609-771-7290. There's a $12 fee though. I'm elated! :D
  2. Hello everyone, apologies for the delayed response. BlackGRE: I did not do any tests from Barron's so I can't answer your question. I practised quant solely using PowerPrep, aiming to complete the test as fast as possible. I think I did the quant section from PowePrep peobably 10-15 times in total. My score fluctuated from 790 to 800. Oldman: Thanks for the kind compliment! In retrospect, I do tend to agree with you that it seems to make more sense to field a research section based on the score of the test-taker. Mervin2008: You may very well be right - that all the words came from the Barron's word list. I only studied the Barron's high-frequency words and did not even memorise all of those! So that would likely explain why they were foreign to me. raza5680: Thanks! us_is_near: Thanks! I'm afraid, like I said earlier, I did not do any quant test other than PowerPrep. To all of you aiming for 800 in quant, I would recommend that you practise on the PowerPrep quant test until you can comfortably score 800. Do not choose the answer you know to be correct for repeated questions. Make sure you perform all the calculations for every question. Good luck! :) One question to all of you who have taken the test: how long does one have to wait for the AWA/official report? It has been almost 3 weeks and still no news. I'm getting anxious... :D
  3. Hey skawal, aren't the bridges supposed to be identical??? :) (Thank goodness I'm done with GRE... my verbal is pretty weak!)
  4. Hi everyone, I post only infrequently in this forum but have read the helpful and informative posts in this forum. Here's my test debrief: The initial background questions really got to me as I was so nervous waiting for the test to begin. I did not even read the instructions and ended up not sure what the questions were asking and eventually just punched in some answers. Had I been more calm I'm sure they would be prefectly clear but I just wasn't expecting them and they took me by surprise. So, just know that you'll be getting some background questions before the timed tests begin. The AWA went better than expected - got the question asking if leaders should be changed every 5 years. Surprisingly, I had more ideas to write than I had thought I would have! That was good, definitely due to the adrenalin. My argument question was on some drug used on rats and the author was arguing that it should be used by students. Pretty standard stuff. But I have to say it was a crazy frantic rush. I had like 5 mins to polish up my issue question but the argument one was insane. I took a break in the 10 mins and went on. Quant came next. First question was of moderate difficulty. The next few questions were noticeably tougher - seemed to be slightly more difficult than Powerprep (can't describe in what way tougher but it just is) however they weren't tough to the extent to be un-doable. Then the difficulty seemed to drop off to the level of the Powerpreps. In general the questions just seemed tedious - felt like more working on the scratch paper than PPs. I usually have about 3-5 mins of spare time doing PPs but during the actual CAT I finished the last question within the last minute or so. I also took A LOT of time at the start almost "triple" checking to make sure I did not miss the first probably 10 questions or so. I was determined not to make any mistakes on the first few questions, telling myself that if I was just a little careless, I would have to take this whole darn test again. I got a bit frantic during the second half of the test but luckily managed to finish it. After that, Verbal. Started off OK. The words seemed manageable though I do not recognise them from the Barron's list. I got increasingly more happy as the dreaded early RC did not hit me. Think I got the RC after the first 10 questions. RC felt tough and I spent a considerable amount of time there - read the passage a few times. I can't really remember much now. Verbal really drained me out. I do recall however, that I do not recognise much of the words and had to guess on quite a few questions - probable 10 or more. One clarification here though: I did not (tried but just could not!) memorise the whole Barron's list. I was a little disparaged going into the test because I read here in the forum of other members memorising all the word lists and are even looking for more obscure esoteric lists to memorise! I started off studying the Barron's list but it went horrendously slow and after E, I only did the high-frequency words. And I still could not memorise all the high-frequency words! Nearing the test, I gave up memorising and just went on to read a list of antonyms - again, tried to memorise but somehow my brain just isn't made for that! I'm pretty sure if I had a better memory, I'd have gotten 700+ but I'm contented with my score. Also, I hope this would encourage anyone like me who just could not memorise all the lists and was getting discouraged by others who could easily memorise all the lists in a week. Just when I thought the ordeal was over, I was told to proceed to the next test! It was another Quant and was NOT identified as a research section. My heart sank. Just when I thought I had done with the Quant section, I am presented with another one. What if the previous one I took was the research one and this coming one was the REAL test? I was already severly drained by the hours of AWA+Quant+Verbal. I took a moment to recollect myself and went ahead. First question was tough but again do-able. Second question was a bomb. I must have spent at least 5 mins on this and was still stumped. It was a question asking one to compare the sides of two triangles joined by a triangle in the center. No lengths were given but all angles for all triangles were given though. And no, there were no repeating values. There were also no patterns like for example, one triangle may have more acute angles indicating smaller length of sides. The angles were all within 5-10 degrees of each other. I could not solve it and ended up using my scratch paper to measure the length of the triangle on the screen! They seemed to be equal in length. I marked the answer and went on. The following questions were also tough! They differed from PP questions. The concepts tested differed considerably. I'm afraid I could not pinpoint how they were different. Nearing the end of the test, I was thinking this seemed more like the research section as the questions just seemed so unusual. I did not have enough time to finish the test and just rushed through the last five questions or so. I did not even have time to read the last question but I did mark it. If ETS reviewed the video recording of me, it must have been quite a sight. After that, scores came! I was going to see my scores regardless of how I felt I did. I needed to know where I stood. The Quant score was a huge relief. I needed to get full marks - the average score for the University I wanted to apply to was 792. Hence, 800 is a must for me. I was aiming for 600 for Verbal and 690 was great! I had 730-770 in PP but that was because I did the test so many times almost half the test was repeated. One note to test-takers though. I noted the school and department codes for the universities I wanted my score to be sent to however, the ETS system does not allow writing of test codes. Instead, the test-taker is required to select the State, then university and lastly department of the university. This threw me off because I did not remember the department to send the scores to. I only remembered the numbers. So, this is some advice to others. I ended up not sending scores. I'd have to give more money to ETS to send scores in the future! It has been a week and 4 days and still no news on AWA scores. How long does it take for the scores to arrive? I'm anxious to receive the official documents to seal my score and call this ordeal over. This has been a tough 3 months! Good luck to all of you.
  5. thanks seagull, that is indeed a sufficient bridge. :)
  6. A) agronomy : farm B) astronomy : planets C) chemistry : heat D) meteorology : weather E) genetics : adaption from powerprep. Can anyone explain why the answer is D?
  7. one question though, what is the "1000 RC doc"?
  8. Oldman! That was a gem of a reply. Thanks so much... :grad:
  9. hi gunzi, I got 5! - 4! because first i take all possible cases from the set "0,1,2,4,5". Then, I subtracted the number of cases with "0" as the first digit (which is 4! cases). :)
  10. If there were equal number of boys and girls, the mean would be (90+81)/2 = 85.5. Since the mean is 84
  11. hello, my take on this: I think gunzi got the concepts spot on but he accidentally assumed the numbers could be repeated. If you do it the same way but used the correct assumption that numbers cannot be repeated, you'd get omit 0: 5! cases omit 3: 5! - 4! cases summing: 5! + 5! - 4! = 9(4!) = 216 cases
